I like Povetkin. This is a man + team who really believe in him and are confident enough to put him in with guys who are potentially tough for a near novice.
Can you imagine Audley fighting guys like Ahunanya or Bango or Ed Mahone in his early fights?
Povetkin puts the likes of Harrison and Khan to shame.

Povetkin and his team have a refreshing attitude and utter belief in his ability.
I hope their ballsy attitude is rewarded - I really like the way he fights, though his lack of size and possible defensive lapses could prove costly as he gets nearer the top.
His team's attitude makes the likes of Roman Greenburg look like the schmucks they are..

He loks a serious threat when I saw him bashing up mayfield- speed, timing.power good.
Just not that big for a modern heavy and seems a little fleshy even at 15 1/2 stone / 6ft 1. Could prob make cruiser - although we have seen quite a few modern heavies step up and be successful -
Holyfield, Ruiz, Moorer, Toney... and Tua / peter / Rahman who are just 6ft 1 I think....

Povetkin will blow out abit later in size (muscle not flab), he is not that old & has plenty of years ahead of him as a heavyweight.
He has probably come along at one of the best times in heavyweight history, I mean that in the sense he has every opportunity to clear up the division and be the number one undisputed champion, with the poor opposition around.
Povetkin wants to fight decent opponents and doesn’t need a padded record, he is not a one off medal winner, but European champion, World champion, Olympic champion, Russian champion. Nobody has come close to this excellent heavyweight prospect outside of Cuba in years.
The other thing is, there are a whole load of top prospects from eastern Europe just waiting for there turn.
As long as politics don’t get in the way we could see something special in the future A true World Heavyweight Champion

As you say ABA, Povetkin's amateur credentials are impeccable although he doesnt fight with the upright style I thought he might have - he is more a combination punching swarmer from what I can tell. Skilled, intelligent pressure having said that.
Excellent prospect. Do you think his first ten fights would have been against the fighters it has been if he had signed with SN as was mooted (he was due to turn pro on the Hatton-Tyszu undercard..)?
I reckon they would be considering taking on a Michael Murray type for his 11th fight, not a world rated fighter!

Remember watching Povetkin for the first time bashing up John Castle and have been a believer ever since. Ed Mahone was a bit of a step back but he deserved it after beating the likes of Richard Bango, Eliecer Castillo and Friday Ahunanya so early in his career. Povetkin is a bit upright but his amateur credentials are second to none and he obviously has skills. Larry Merchant and his sobbing nation can turn to Joe Louis all they like but the next saviour of the division is highly unlikely to emerge from the USA given the dire crop they are currently lauding as prospects.
