AFter hearing the news that Jameel 'Big Time' McCline blew out his knee in the 3rd round against Nicolai Valuev, I thought to myself that this had to go down as one of the worst championship fights in history.
Then I thought, why not make a list of some of the worst. Here is a few that in my opinion were horrible matches:
-John Ruiz vs Kirk Johnson (WBA)
-John Ruiz-Evander Holyfield trilogy (WBA)
-Max Schmeling vs Jack Sharkey (1) (world)
-Mike Dokes vs Mike Weaver (1) (WBA)
-Ernie Terell vs Chuck Wepner (National Americas title)
-Larry Holmes vs Tex Cobb (world)
-Muhammad Ali vs Jimmy Young (world)
-Muhammad Ali vs Alfredo Evangelista (world)
-Muhammad Ali vs Chuck Wepner (world)
That's just some that were horrible championship fights in my opinion.
Briggs/Liahovich recently was pretty frickin terrible. You had to wait till almost the last second to see something special. Heavyweight fights in general are more boring than any other division, although there is a share of snoozers.
Not sure if the IBO Cruiserweight Title qualifies as a "title" for the purposes of this thread, but Tommy Hearns' 2000 "title defense" vs. Uriah Grant for that bauble was pretty dismal - Hearns stepped wrong early in the 2nd (I seem to remember he slipped on a patch of Metamucil) and broke his ankle. The audience at the retirement home was shocked and disappointed at this abrupt ending to their evening's entertainment.
