It's much more than just watching two drunk scotsmen fighting over a penny.boxerbob wrote:what a load of crap....guys put in a ring punching , holding and kicking lumps out of each other.

In the early days there were a few toughmen types but that is long gone. Anyone who doesn't have the full repetoire won't make it onto TV now unless he is a big freak like Giant Silva or Zulozenio (sp?) who sometimes get shown in the opening 'bout' and almost invariably lose quickly.
Each to his own, but MMA is very popular now. To dismiss it as shite seems a bit extreme.

If you dont like it fair enough - plenty of people are with you on that one -but I would re-evaluate your assessment.
If you speak to people ignorant of boxing many will say its just two men standing there bashing each others brains in with no skill - you are making a similarly ill informed judgement on MMA.
Its fine not to enjoy it - I can fully understand why people find it boring/messy to watch, but dont dismiss it as unrefined brawling because that is just not the case anymore.

Here is an interesting piece on UFC, detailing its rise from the gutter to the Las Vegas strip and huge PPV dollars..

If boxing promoters dismiss it as a fad or no real challenge to their dominant position, I feel they are mistaken.
Gary Shaw recently took the plunge and set up an MMA promtion - how long before the rest follow?...

Younger generations seem to prefer MMA. Personally, I never warmed to it. As a teenager it shattered my fantasy of being able to kick people in the face Van Damme style to win fights.
A lot of ppl see it as a more practical form of combat - any fight without boxing gloves will go into an ugly grapple, and ppl feel the need to learn the ins and outs of it.
As the BM editor wrote this month, the "obvious fights" are almost too much to ask for with some of boxing's more conservative promoters. In UFC it's different, the bigger names tend to fight each other.
Obviously, boxers aren't all matched safe. In Japan just look at Koki Kameda or Nob Nashiro, or look at how Gary Shaw pushes his US fighters to the big fights (sometimes overreaching, but Dawson-Adamek will be good).
But in Britain they are definitely giving up some ground. How many new fans will Warren win over with WBU title fights, below par WBO fights etc. It wasn't me that invented the phrase "allegedly" shite but I hear it from friends quite a lot.

You are bang on the money fried bread - its the next generations combat sport of choice, or so it would seem to me.fried bread wrote:Younger generations seem to prefer MMA. It appeals to the MTV generation - MMA gyms are usually well equiped ( on the down side they are expensive) but unlike boxing gyms arent run down, in a 5hit hole area and full of gypsies - their is money in teaching/promoting it.
As for winning fights with kicks to the head - watch out for Mirko Cro Cop as he comes to UFC - he has won plenty of these things with a high left kick - wins over Igor Vovchanchin and Wanderlei Silve being his two most memorable ones (and George St Pierre recently beat Matt Hughes with a kick to the head) - it can be done!

I wonder with the kicking. Do they ever get told to clean up the wrestling and thus spend time standup when they'd normally be in grapples?TerribleTerry wrote:You are bang on the money fried bread - its the next generations combat sport of choice, or so it would seem to me.fried bread wrote:Younger generations seem to prefer MMA. Definitely, you do get some excellent kicks, and St Pierre looks a real athlete, compared to a lot of his peers, who look like they've spent too much time in the weights room.

Dont sleep on Mo Smith, as our American bretherin would say; he was the long time WKA World kickboxing champion throughout the 80s/early 90s as well as the first UFC Black weighweigh champ (I think - either him or Randleman).viciousmaussa wrote:Has anyone heard of Maurice Smith? He TKO'd a guy called Conan Silviera with a kick to the head. Silveria was a BJJ practitioner & Smith promptly made some expensive 'how to beat BJJ tapes.' Funny that he lost the rematch.
Maurice Smith is an excellent kickboxer and was one of the first to transition into MMA successfully. He was no fly-by-night-one-hit-wonder but a legit champ and, as I say, a WKA all time great.
I have seen the Silviera fight and it was a spectacular finish but that Conan fellar never really lived up to the hype as I remember, after Mo KOed him.

On this subject of head kick KOs, I have just finished watching the Ultimate Fight Night from last night and there is an absolute BEAST of a head kick KO on that show (dont wanna spoil it for those who want to watch the show, but its an absolute monster..)fried bread wrote: As a teenager it shattered my fantasy of being able to kick people in the face Van Damme style to win fights.

Funny thing is I used to have the same view as boxerbob but now im quite a big fan of UFC(will never like it as much as boxing tho
). When you first watch UFC yes I suppose it does seem like two men just hugging each other but the more you watch it the more you appreciate all the holds and tactics involved. As most ppl on here seem to know its very technical. Oh yeah and the best kick knockout ive ever seen is on K-1 , Remy Bonjasky ko's Mastorovic with a brutal kick to the head...you have to check that one out- Mastorovic was out for about ten minutes!

King of the K1 head kick KOs for me has to be 'The Dutch Lumber Jack' Peter Aerts. Check out one of his highlight films on youtube - awesome!black panther wrote:Funny thing is I used to have the same view as boxerbob but now im quite a big fan of UFC(will never like it as much as boxing tho). Once you start to follow UFC you realise how good it is. It's no use watching Chuck Lidell with his chin in the air and thinking "Oh Maccarinelli would knock him out". Don't try and compare UFC with boxing it's a different ball game.
There is a heck of a lot of skill in the octagon. Upsets happen frequently and the big matches get made, STANDARD.
The UFC is a brutal violent busines and you've got to respect these guys who perform in an often nasty atmosphere under that much risk in front of their friends and family.
