Actually, that was their THIRD fight. Kindelan beat Khan twice, at the Pre-Olympic tourney and at the Olympic final.

Then he boxes Frankie Gavins ears off, then shows up in Bolton and strangely makes no effort whatsoever v Khan. Most dodgy amateur contest i ever saw.

I agree to some extent, Ricky has never looked as relentless in the ring as he did before beating Tszyu, however maybe that's not a coincidence perhaps he just lost the fire after the big win.

The point I felt it all started looking iffy was after the Kelson Pinto fight fell through, that would have been an excellent fight to build on the Tackie win and launch Ricky into the bigtime. Instead they had to call in Pederson. By that point Warren was dangeling Spadafore and Harris but never it materialised, in against Vilches Ricky looked like he had no motivation what so ever. I got the feeling the Zoo fight was made because wWrren knew Ricky would leave if he didn't deliver.

Obviously I know nothing about match making and would never claim to, but I can't help but think he should have gone to the US earlier maybe after the Tackie win rather than filling out the MEN against guys like Virchis. Maybe had a fight against someone half decent or even forced his WBO mandatory status against Cotto then tried for either Gatti or Zoo. This is all speaking from a fight fan's perspective obviously I've no idea if this would have left him better off financially than staying in the UK.
In fairness to Warren the reason these fights didn't happen was largely down to Ricky's purse demands

JOKE

Post by Boxing Addict »

Theres no point even thinking about the shortcut (WBO), Earl isn't gonna get past Katsidis.

Why is he fighting super featherweight non-punchers, yes he might look good but when he comes to fighting Thaxton / Romanov he will get destroyed.

He has to fight in real fights where he can learn and improve his ability. He has talent no doubt, but fighting against non-punchers who are 2 weight classes underneath you is a joke and a con to the british public, but real boxing fans know this is a joke!!!

Fully agree with this. And, as you also say, I cannot see Khan getting past Thaxton or Romanov within the sort of timescale he is planning.
If there's going to be any sort of title, it has to be either the WBU or the Comm. belt, as I actually think he would have the beating of Limmond.
If Earl loses to Katsidis, then maybe Khan-Earl for the WBU strap is a possibility nearing the end of the year.

Incidentily, I asked on the record queries forum why the IBF I/C belt wasn't listed in Khan's record. Ok, he immediately vacated it, but it was still on the line for his last fight.
But apparently, the IBF told boxrec that they never sanctioned the fight. Also, the previous holder fought for the title again recently (either that or a defense is coming up) which corroborates the story.
A small thing, but pisses me off a bit. I know Khan's fight was hastily souped up after the Skelton pull-out, so there could have been some confusion between the IBF and SN, but nevertheless no move to correct or update things, and that pisses me off a bit. Any pictures of Khan holding an IBF belt aloft should be forwarded to the nearest lawyer imo :D

Yep. The BBC said today that Khan vacated the belt to concentrate on Lightweight division. Complete fantasy.

The problem with Khan and modern boxing is that promoters/managers are so obsessed with a spotless 30-0 style record that so many contenders end up chinned in their first genuine test because they haven't been developed and matched so soft. That is Khans future.

Who knows how Tyson would have reacted when Berbick went straight at him trying to overpower him had he only fought the easy bums he was fighting in 85? The likes of quality guys like Ferguson, Tillis, and Ribalta trying to actually beat him and knock his block off is vital experience before a world title fight.

That whole Bolton show was shameful, one of British boxings most embarrassing moments.

the other thing worth considering is that as Hatton climbed the rankings, and became bigger box office, opponents knew more about his style, and how to nullify it, and also were more motivated as they knew that a win over Hatton would propel them into the big time.

Certainly I think Collazo and Urango carried more ambition into the ring that Ben Tackie, already a veteran by that stage, or Vince Phillips did.

Ricky also seems to be more circumspect these days, he thinks about his fights more as he has a lot more to lose possibly, but whatever the reason, his style of fighting has definetly changed.

I was watching Lennox Lewis V Tyrell Biggs the other day and Jim Lampley said before the fight "Lewis has been feeding on ludicrously weak opposition" i thought that was very harsh considering some decent step up names on his record up to the Biggs clash.

Anyway i wonder what they would make of Amir's progress?

Everybody who knows only a little boxing knows Khan is a LT-WELTER.

This guy is a S-Feather...and just to make sure he don`t hit too hard either :-?

I`ve said it many many times before..the people around Khan are worried about his chin, we have our doubts about it, but they must know for sure.

Khan has had guys put infront of him that he should have KO`ed in style...smaller guys with no punch...but the major problems are showing through after each fight.

Lack of real punch
Lack of strength..and thats against smaller guys
Lack of quality defence

Think thats enough to safely say he`ll fall well short of McGuigans claims :D

That is the absolute nuts and bolts of it.
