Do you think that accepting your first fight back in nearly a year after suffering a bad knockout - accepting to fight an up and coming undefeated prospect in his own backyard - plus give away weight is the best thing to do?boxingchat wrote:I must say sorry, He was offered a job with John Fewkes and turn it down, So what can you do with someone like him. Danny hunt left maloneys and joined up with sn and after one fight was never seening so we all use the same heap. Yes think sn are the best and how can you knock the best.
Sorry, but a journeyman I am not, and that kind of fight I am not looking for as my first back in. Maybe after the first one then yes, but a rust-remover I am looking for first. I have not seen the guy fight, but I know from experience that travelling to another person's backyard to fight does you no favours - especially when your opponent has strong support.
I don't know who you are boxingchat, but if you think that a fight like that is the best route to take given my circumstances, then you don't know a lot about boxing.

Fewekes is a fiery, well schooled prospect - you did the right thing in turning that job down Dean if you are looking to ease your way back in - that kid is a right handful!Dynamite Dean Phillips wrote:Do you think that accepting your first fight back in nearly a year after suffering a bad knockout - accepting to fight an up and coming undefeated prospect in his own backyard - plus give away weight is the best thing to do?boxingchat wrote:I must say sorry, He was offered a job with John Fewkes and turn it down, So what can you do with someone like him. Dean,
Have you thought about contacting Paul Boyce - maybe he could put you on the Gammer vs Williams bill.
Ceri Hall will probably be looking for an opponent, having seen you both fight I think that is winnable - but it might be at Light Welter.
Impact boxing seems to be a promotion on the way up. They have Gary Reid as pretty much their top Lightweight. Good little contest that would be, tough to call. They also have an English Lightweight title fight up on 24th Feb (according to BBN schedules) so it could be an avenue - not the English title, but a fight for the champion.

Hi Stu - I am campaigning at lightweight, so a light-welter fight would be pointless - although would be confident of winning a fight with Hall if I were at light-welter. Cheers. Never seen Reid in action.stujones wrote:Dean,

I understand Dean, although I think maybe you could do a "Thaxton" and have the one fight at Light Welter (say vs Hall) just to get the rust always saying your desire to fight at Lightweight.
Thaxton's only had one fight at Lightweight since his return and he was mandatory for the British title, similarly John Murray has never fought at Super Feather - but was a mandatory challenger for the British title. Only really cause he said he could make Super Feather easy.
Hall is quite a big Light Welter but cannot punch for Toffee... nice 8 rounder to get going IMO. Especially as it could be on TV.
Even though your attitude in your posts on this topic have been spot on... you haven't got the time to have any other setback so you want it to be right. I'm just thinking I'm not sure who will want to groom you to a British title shot. It maybe that you might have to have a toughish assignment first up almost as proof to your title credentials now. Out of all of those available, I would say Hall as a one of Light Welter fight would be the easiest - beat Hall and you will be practically calling the shots with Paul Boyce - who can deliever (Hall fairly recently had a EU title shot that went unnoticed).
Perhaps Boyce can put on the card and not in with Hall.... Your more of a name than Hall whom he regards as usually his second most known fighter in his stable. Its not often you see a Paul Boyce fighter but in with a risky opponent on one of his bills - so I would seriously consider phoning him up - either with Hall in mind, or as a Boyce fighter. I'm sure he would love to have you on board, compared to the rest of his stable (Gammer excluded) your pedigree is second to none.

That is what I have been missing out on my whole career - fighting locally, or pretty locally, so would love to fight on this show - but as a house fighter, not an opponent. The only time Paul Boyce has asked me to fight on one of his shows, it has been as an opponent, and that's not what I would be looking for with regard to fighting in Wales. Should I be offered a fight on his show(s) as the home fighter, then that would be music to my ears. Thanks.
Seen some dodgy decisions at Boyce shows - quite how Jason Samuels got the nod of Hussein Osman a year or so back was beyond me and I would say 95% of the crowd.
On the other hand, I thought Karl David won the first 3 rounds vs Silence Saheed - I had to go but heard the final round followed the same pattern and it was the away fighter who got the nod.

Thaxton fought for the WBF lightweight title twice since his comeback, so the Meager fight was his third fight at 9st 9lb. The reason he didn't for the other fights is that the matches were made at different weights say 9st 12lb etc..

If I fought closer to home then yes I would (and have) sold tickets. But most of my fights have been fought on away soil, and each time I have "tried to step up in class" as you put it has been on away soil - I've lost just once on points all the times I've actually got to fight in Wales, so make of that what you will. My last fight was a one off which could have happened to any fighter - and its up to me to prove that was merely a setback by the way I will come back a better fighter for it.thespy wrote:What exactly do you bring to the table Dean?. You don't sell tickets, you're coming off the back of a knockout defeat! and seem to lose everytime you try to step up in class.
I expected Tontchev to blast out Jon Honney after our fight, but Honney took him the full course. In contrast, I beat Honney in 2 rounds, so again make of that what you will.
Regardles of that though, I'm looking at building myself back up this year, I didnt say I wanted to fight for a title straight away. I make no excuses, I was caught cold with a good shot in my last fight, and that's boxing - but I do believe that had I got going a bit then the outcome would have been very different.
Most every fight I have been in has been entertaining to watch and isn't that what its all about from the paying public's point of view - seeing as its a spectator sport.
There's still a lot more in the tank.

well dean surely boyce would want to promote you as a potential titlist not as a opponent considering your credentials in the ring...
btw i am local - live near loughor and have followed your career in the evening post where you seem to get decent write ups...
surely you would be an asset to a local promoter like boyce ?
