Dominic NEgus Book - Out of the Shadows

HAs anyone read this book?

Saw a CHannel 5 (I think) programme on him...someothing about hard men I think.

He has clearly had an interesting life - have chatted to him on a couple of occasions.

Wondering whether to buy it (though am reading GEne Tunney book and ordered Roberto Duran book already.)

Is it going to be another Lennie Maclean-type book or a bit more insight I wonder...

Is the Tunney book any good - what is it called, 'Fighting Marine'?? I would be interested in a well written account of Tunney's life; I think I will leave the Milky Bar Kid's book on the shelf TBH!

I've only read the first 50 or so pages of Tunney book, but it's well written and clear by the intoduction that he had a degree of success in and beyond boxing that is unparalleled....so far the book works well putting his life into early 20th century context.....

It's a new book, I got it for Xmas and was bought in states, but seems you can buy at amazon.co.uk for £12.80:

Tunney never fought a black fighter his entire career.

In those days very few black fighters got opportunities. You can hardly hold it against tunney.

Exactly - Tunney was a warrior. Blame society not the fighter for the lack of opportunities afforded black fighters - I am sure Tunney would have fought anyone put in front of him.

The Duran book is excellent

I'm about half way through - the writer has done a brilliant job with his research, and has obviously spoken to all involved and stayed in Panama for some time it appears.
He's got a nice easy going style about his writing too.

Just received my copy at the weekend, not started it yet, as I am reading the Jesus Chavez book at the moment. Got the Archie Moore book recently, was a bit dissapointed at it's lack of anything new.

Good stuff - always wondered why there were no Duran books before - glad this one is well written.

Does it mention any of th efollowing two stories I heard:

- He had a pet lion or tiger that he used to wank offf as a party trick!
- Later in his career he used to drink champagne all the way through training - apparently even in the gym...

I had a quick flick through the Negus book in my local bookshop during my lunch hour the other day. The book claims he was a two time World Champion???

From the bits I read it seemed wriiten in a simular style to the Shaw & McClean books which was a little offputting for me to be honest. But I'm not really into the post Lock Stock gangster chic stuff.

I'm currently reading Charley Burley by Harry Otty which is an excellent book on a truely great fighter.

Don't think you'll be dissapointed with the Duran book James - the writer has spoken to 100's of people involved and come up with loads of info I've never heard before - even talks with Duran's mother, father & sisters

Yep it's long over due..be good if the writer turned his sights on another legend now - the list is endless, but maybe JC Chavez would be good.

Only half way though but no mention of the lion story - that was Katz who heard that I think, and Duran probably told him when he was half cut I'd guess! There's a picture of him and the big cat in there.

Can well believe the champagne story...his manager made the big mistake of an immediate Leonard rematch in order to get Duran out of the bars & clubs....what a fool.

It's strange when you see a chapter with the Duran quote "No black man will ever beat me"

Duran being Duran, he can get away with that and no-one bats an eyelid.
But Alan Minter has never been forgiven almost 30 years later.

Me too...interesting to read that they really did avoid a Buchanan rematch, just like Ken has always said.

Pernell Whitaker said before he fought De La Hoya "He ain't fought anybody till he's fought a brother". Not quite as blatant, but a simular message and nobody raised an eyebrow.

KO Joe the Harry Ottey book is a cracker, as you say about a great fighter. I couldnt put it down.

I'm reading a book called In The Red Corner, its by John Duncan.
Basically he spent a year in Cuba trying to get a fight set up between Savon and Tyson, Also it tells the stories of famous boxing Cubans.

Good read so far, he kind of travel writes a bit like Bryson, and he met some wierd characters over there, bit different from the usual boxing books, but well worth a read.

Yeah ive got that, its good. There are some great boxing books out there
