Boxrec Boxing Hall of Fame Ballot

Post by Ambling Alp »

Kid Lefty came up with this great idea of the BoxRec Boxing Hall of Fame. He ran it the first 3 elections and it was a lot of fun.

Since Kid Lefty has seemed to have disappeared, I will tabulate the votes this time.
The deadline for submitting your for this election is Noon CDT on February 15, 2007.
A brief summary of the rules:
A voter can vote for up to 25 names. (If you vote for more than 25 your entire vote won't count)
A fighter's last fight has to be before 1997 to be eligible.
You can change your vote. Your last vote before the deadline will be the one counted.

Candidates who are named on 75% or more of the ballots are inducted.
Go to the BoxRec Forum Hall of Fame Sticky for the complete rules and to see who has already been voted in.

To vote, just list your selections on this thread (don't put them on the Hall of Fame Sticky)
It would be appreciated if you list your names in alpabetical order.

In the past 3 elections, there has been a good variety of fighters elected. Hopefully, we can continue to include fighters from a wide variety of eras, weight classes, countries, styles of fighters, etc.

There has been a lot interest in doing more elections, so lets have some fun with this.

To get things started, here is my ballot:

Lou Ambers
Abe Attell
Nino Benevenuti
Tony Canzoneri
George Dixon
Joe Frazier
Gene Fullmer
Kid Gavilan
Wilfredo Gomez
Emile Griffith
Fighting Harada

Johnny Kilbane
Sonny Liston
Jimmy McClarinin
Packy McFarland
Rueben Olivares
Aaron Pryor
Vincente Saldivar
Michael Spinks
John L. Sullivan

J-C, Pernell Whitaker hasn't been retired long enough so far to be eligible. You don't have to do your whole ballot over. Just say who you you want to replace him with.

So far the voting has been very interesting.

sockdollanger- Joe Gans has already been voted in. You can add someone else instead. You don't have to do the whole ballot over, just say who you want to replace Gans.

As per Boxbuzz's suggestion, the deadline will be now be Thursday, February 15, at Noon CDT.

Great to see people voting, but I can't hide my displeasure with the way some fighters were ignored so far. 3 votes for Packey McFarland ? The guy lost once in 110 fights, when he was 15 yrs old, and then went on the longest unbeaten streak in boxing history, with wins over very solid oppostion, plus he was on the canvas just twice during that streak. Jimmy McLarnin's not doing much better, and the guy beat more Hall of Famers than Sugar Ray Robinson or Harry Greb, and he did it in alot fewer fights. Panama Al Brown 17-1 in title fights and never stopped in a long career deserves more votes as well, AND just 2 for Kid McCoy and Tommy Gibbons ??? As Drederick Tatum would say "That's Unconscienable". And I guess Martin Sosa Cameron will be disappointed when he see's I'm the only one to cast a vote for Pascual Perez.

There are still too many to choose from... I thought Billy Conn was a shoe-in for this round, but obviously he is not.

You are definitely going to get differences of opinion when voting for fighters in all weight classes in a time span of over 100 years. Of course that makes it interesting!

The Great John L - You only chose 22 fighters. You can vote for up to 3 more if you would like.

I have a feeling that Conn will get in on the next ballot. Conn was the last person I cut off of my ballot and I think it was the same way for a lot of people. He will definitely be on my list next time (unless, of course, no one on my list gets voted in this time).

An update on what we've got so far:

As of right now, 69 different fighters have accumulated at least 1 vote.

4 fighters would be inducted as of right now, with another half dozen or so barely missing the cut.

1 fighter has been on every ballot so far.
