We all hope there is internet access as we would really like to follow the tournament each day. I like to read commentary on the bouts too rather than just the raw scores, but as Mel found out sometimes that can cause problems. You have to be thick skinned if you are going to be a reporter and comment about the bouts, otherwise we will just have to make do with the scores only. Thanks in advance.

They save 54 (Guillermo Rigondeaux who's been injured), 64 (Inocente Fiss?, who's been injured) and 75 (Emilio Correa?) for the next qualifier in Buenos Aires. Great, cause I'll be there!

I am very glad someone is making an effort to keep the rest of us here in the States informed as to the happenings at the Pan Am qualifier. Most of us follow these athletes as they attend the various tournaments, and enjoy hearing how things are going. Thankyou. :TU:

Well ladies and gentlemen, looks like I will be able to report daily results for all of you. And I´ll try to do some commentary if I can. I was actually thinking about recording all the bouts of the tournament but now that seems unlikely because the person I had for the job couldn´t come to Venezuela at the last minute. His US Passport expires in 5 months but that´s not enough to come here, I don´t know why they put an exp. date to it then. So it will be results with maybe some comments if time permits. I will be helping our kids in the corner in some fights and warming them up in others so it will be very difficult to record all the fights but I will have recorded as many as I can. Or what´s better I´ll find out if the organizers are going to have the tournament recorded. By now all I can tell you is that all teams are already here including USA.
I served as translator today for Andrade and a small kid that I don´t know his name, maybe the 106 or the 112 pounder.

Well that´s all for now, I keep you posted, bye. Ricky

Ricky, I'm so glad you will be there to report first hand and help our boxers who don't speak the language. There is one spanish speaking boxer but that's all.

Is there internet access that the athletes would have access to so they can contact home.

Thanks again

Ricky - it's great you'll be there. Since you are also working corners for the PR team, it will be more than enough if you can just give us the daily results - who won and how (points, RSC, etc). When does the competition actually begin?

Our 112 is Qa'id Muhammad - maybe it was him.

Have a good time!

Boxfan08 - so no one on our team speaks Spanish except Del Valle? Interesting. I would have thought Yanez and Marroquin both did.

From the USA Boxing web site:

Two U.S. boxers will open competition on Friday at the first Pan American Games Qualifier in Barquisimeto, Venezuela. Lightweight Terence Crawford (Omaha, Neb.) and light heavyweight Christopher Downs (Fort Carson, Colo.) will both take the ring on the opening day of boxing at the first Pan American Qualifier, February 2-8 in Barquisimeto, Venezuela. Crawford will battle Jose Virula of Guatemala while Downs will take on Julio Cesar Costillo of Ecuador on Friday.

Light flyweight Luis Yanez (Duncanville, Texas) will open competition on Saturday with a preliminary bout with Cuba’s Yampier Hernandez and fellow Dallas boxer, bantamweight Roberto Marroquin will face off with an Argentine foe on Saturday. Light welterweight Karl Dargan (Philadelphia, Pa.) will take the ring on Saturday as well, battling Columbia’s Jose Mosquera in quarterfinal action. Heavyweight Adam Willett (Bellport, N.Y.) will round out Saturday’s action for the United States team as he takes on Barbados.

Flyweight Qa’id Muhammad (Ventnor City, N.J.) will open Sunday’s action with a quarterfinal contest with Cuba’s Yoandry Salinas. Middleweight Shawn Porter (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) and super heavyweight Mike Wilson (Central Point, Ore.) will compete for the first time on Sunday as well, taking on Columbia’s Andrés Camilo Érira and Oscar Rivas de Valle respectively. If Crawford wins his bout on Friday he will join his three teammates in competing on Sunday.

The final U.S. boxers to step through the ropes will do so on Monday, February 5. Featherweight Luis Del Valle (Newburgh, N.Y.) will take on the winner of Friday’s bout between Barbados and Ecuador while welterweight Demetrius Andrade (Providence, R.I.) faces Mexico’s Norberto Gonzalez. If Downs wins his opening bout, he will battle the winner of Argentina and Puerto Rico on Monday.

All the semifinal bouts will take place on Tuesday, February 6 and championship bouts be contested on Thursday, February 8.

The light flyweight through light heavyweight division competitors will have to advance to quarterfinal action to earn a Pan Am berth while the heavyweight and super heavyweight division boxers will have to place in the top three. The third place athlete will be the boxer who loses to the eventual champion in the semifinal round.

If the U.S. boxers don’t earn qualifying spots in Barquisimeto, they will have two more opportunities. The second qualifier will take place March 13-21 in Buenos Aires, Argentina and the third qualifier will be contested April 21-29 in Port of Spain, Trinidad.

The coaches leading the United States team in Venezuela will be USA Boxing National Director of Coaching Dan Campbell (Colorado Springs, Colo.), 2004 Olympic Head Coach Basheer Abdullah (Fort Carson, Colo.) and 2004 Olympic Coach Anthony Bradley (Hope Mills, N.C.).

So are Crawford and Downs now advancing to the quarter-finals? If so, are they now qualified for the Pan Am Games or do they have to win one more bout?

Some of our guys have a tough draw with boxing a Cuban in their first bout, but if they win they have a good chance of winning the qualifier.

It looks like there were some confusion, USAB's website now says they have to get to semis and it's bold so the first post must have been a mistake.

It also says Luis lost a close bout to Cuba. :(

Mel - I had read further up the page, but it didn't seem like it was correct. Now USAB has clarified it and the new info posted on their site makes it clear that those two boxers must win their quarter-final bouts to qualify. Unfortunately, Yanez lost by 1 point to the Cuban boxer.
