Seems we were right about Scott Harrison all along
For a start I think there should be more help for addicts, and there should be a curb on drinkers, raising the age limit to 21 would be a good move imo as well as heavier penalties for people who commit crimes while under the influence of alcohol... I'm sick of seeing thugs that have beaten someone half to death while drunk just getting off with fines or a couple of months inside.... give them 10 years in a solitary cell with a mattress on the floor, that would make some people think twice about what they do when theyre drunk....

All addicts begin by saying they can handle itjamesmcdonnell wrote:Well, I'm not a junkie or anything. Like a huge swathe of the population in this country, I like a bit of nose now and again, have the odd spliff with a bottle of wine, and occasionally (though rarely now) have a E.
Cocaine will bring out the worst in people. If you are an aggressive person already, it will bring out that aggression in you. I personally am not an aggressive person, unless provoked to extremes, and so it's not a problem.
Someone like Harrison however, obviously has an addictive personality trait, and is probably unable to control his habits. Interestingly Cocaine is not at all physically addictive, but is incredibly powerful nontheless, as it acts on an extremely powerful and primitive level with the brain chemistry, making it fantastically psychologically addictive, it acts on dopamine, which is the chemical responsible for us feeling 'pleasure' obviously a very very powerful and very ancient evolutionary chemical pathway.
This is why Cocaine is so dangerous for people with compulsive or addictive personality disorders, it's feeding into a very basic mechanism, and it's a cycle which can be very hard to get out of.
Having said all that, if you can handle it, it's a laugh now and then.
Joking aside, how about this trollop of a woman who went and killed 4 kids while driving a stolen car (two of them her own kids) and out of her head on drugs, what does she get?... 9 years??.... you can get more than that for taking too many cigs over from France etc... she should get life.... 25 minimum!.... and this is a sort of thing that is happening all too often because of drugs. Its all very well saying drugs are fun and we can handle them etc, the truth is that drugs are a poison that have dragged down whole communities and led to crime spiralling out of control in many areas in this country... and have a look what they have done to other countries....

True, but there are plenty of recreational users who say they can handle it......and canThe Blade wrote:All addicts begin by saying they can handle itjamesmcdonnell wrote:Well, I'm not a junkie or anything. Yeh but recreational use can become habital and an addiction quite easily and crossing from one to the other can happen without you noticing.... and even 'recreational' use of drugs and booze can leave you with physical and mental damage after a few years....Chesney_Chambers wrote:True, but there are plenty of recreational users who say they can handle it......and canThe Blade wrote:All addicts begin by saying they can handle itjamesmcdonnell wrote:Well, I'm not a junkie or anything. Drugs, alcohol and smoking do nothing to help a boxer - Fitness and dedication to the sport should be the priority - This thread with people saying drugs are OK is rediculous and harmful to young people reading it - Harrison is an example of how things can get out of hand - His talent completely wasted because of his abuse of drugs and alcohol - His career over, his life in shreads instead of standing in the hall of fame it has to be the hall of shame for Harrison - He wont be mentioned with the likes of Watt or Buchanan as one of the greats of Scottish boxing - Sad isnt it - He needs help and its only under lock and key that he may be able to survive - He wont on the outside, thats for sure - We need to send a clear strong message to all young people not just young boxers - Dont take drugs, dont smoke and drink in moderation - I have seen so many highly respected people ruin their lives, careers, and lose their family etc - A former company director sleeping in skips was one of many who ended up at rock bottom - A life with cocaine and white cyder is not a happy one.

All you can do is warn people of the dangers, the rest is up to them, 'just say no' simply doesn't work. We are all free to choose whether to drink, smoke, take drugs etc.
Harrison without boxing, would probably have ended up in the gutter or jail a long long time ago, he's simply got a weakness for it, which he will have to work out with the help of professionals.
He's not the first, and won't be the last boxer with behavioural, drink and alcohol problems, after all, boxing doesn't recruit it's cohorts from the swiss family robinson's charm school for ladies does it?

As part of some research, I have looked at the effect drugs have on sport and also the dangers (both short and long term) of a variety of drugs. It is fact that Alcohol is as addictive and has a much greater health damage to your health. Indeed, the proffesor who I was working with (a tee total, non smoking, non drug user) said that if hash was legalised and Alcohol banned we would be much healthier.
Hash can have some positive impact on sporting performance, but would depend on the activity and the personality of the athlete. It CAN (in some cases, not all) relax someone and although your reactions do tend to slow down for some sports that is not so important. Depending on their personality and how they naturally respond to pressure, but it could enhance sports people like Golfers and Snooker players.
BTW, I would never put anything up my nose or inject - Pulp Fiction frightend my for life.
