Can anyone identify this boxer from the 1920's

Post by Martin »

Can anyone please help identify this boxer please. My grandfather was the late Teddy Baldock (World bantamweight Champion 1927) and this picture is amongst his collection of photos. If I had to make a guess it was probably taken around 1926 in New York whilst my grandfather fought in America. Someone has mentioned Frankie Garcia?

I hope the above link works.

That is indeed "Frankie Garcia", who's real name was Frank Geraci. he also fought under a couple of other names as well.
The only reason I know this, is that this guy was from Utica NY, which is a short trot down I90 from Syracuse where i grew up, trained, and still own a business and have a condo. A ton of fighters came out of the Utica, Canastota, Syracuse area, and the boxing communities are very much intertwined.
This guy was known to lead an "intersting" life outside the ring.

Thank you for the reply, it was interesting to find out who the person was, I managed to find a few of his fight reports on the newspaper archive site, although I haven't been able to find any pictures of him. I have a couple of Everlast record books from 1927 and 1931 but he wasn't mentioned apart from in a few fighters records. If you have any links to pictures I would be interested to look at them.
Thank you once again for taking the time to reply.

Hello! This is my grandpa. He died when I was only 8 but I will always remember his smile and they way he smelled. He taught me a few moves too. If any of you have any memorabilia or any personal stories to share please email me at [email protected]. My family would be so grateful. Thank you!

Cosand, there has been no mention in my family about the name Geraci. Can you elaborate on his "interesting" life outside the ring? I'm not doubting it, I would love to know more! Please any info you have is greatly appreciated. He was very loved and admired by his family.

I'm afraid it looks like Martin is long gone by now (last log in here was late 2007 according to his profile page). If you PM him he might get an email notification about it - that'd probably be the only way you could reach him here.

Yes Martin was able to contact me! I was also reunited with the rest of the Garcia family via this website. Love social media. :0)
