Collazo-Rivera was buried and to my knocledge not even televised outside of Spain. Most DKP shows have been minor league world title fights in the hometowns of unppular fighters.stujones wrote:Danny Williams and Howard Eastman both signed for King and were frozen out. So just because a promoter signs a fighter, doesn't necessarily think he is going to be the next big thing.
Nobody knows the ins and out of the Golden Boy deal. Perhaps it was just a way of getting the Eastman vs Hopkins fight signed. Nothing seems to happening with Froch and Witter with this regard so far. None have been showcased in the states since and Eastmans' one US fight since was not with Golden Boy.
I would actually say Urango's profile if anything was bigger than Collazo cause he has been showcased (main event) on Showbox and ESPN. Collazo hasn't. However, Collazo and Maussa have been chief support on big events (Maussa's being a hugely anticipated PPV - that drew good numbers) and Collazo has feature on big Don King cards.
Witter to Hatton: Give Britain what it wants
Think it might have to do with Witter being a long time EBU champion. WBC and the EBU have had a longer history than Oscar and the WBC. Look how long Witter was mandated and still could get a shot - Had to wait untill Floyd moved up.
As some posters have been saying, it looks like the belt means nowt if he cannot get showcased.
The deal was announced AFTER the Hopkins fight and I believe part of the deal for the Eastman fight was to get Hennessey fighters some exposure.

Hold on a minute. I cant believe that Witter's fight with Judah slipped my mind - high-up on the bill of a world-wide Mike Tyson fight broadcast...any of those fighters youve mentioned have had no way the sort of exposure that that gave Witter.stujones wrote: I would actually say Urango's profile if anything was bigger than Collazo cause he has been showcased (main event) on Showbox and ESPN. Witter's poor performance that night has given him a relatively substantial stateside profile (admittedly though, not one that he wants - but then again all publicity is good publicity!). Indeed nearly 7 years on Witter is remembered predominantly in the US for that one performance.
No - not all publicity is good publicity, ask his staple mate Johnny Nelson. Not touched by any promoter after drawing in a world title challenge. Didn't fight in the UK again after his performance vs Jones.liamlion wrote:Hold on a minute. Look at Roy Jones, one time legend - last fight was on a minor PPV station (CSS) in a tiny arena. Evander Holyfield, now one of Fox Sports premier fighters!
Defeats can enhance the reputation if you put in a good performance. Collazo is rewarded with a big headline fight with Mosley. Maussa upset Harris and Urango has been in some GOOD fights. According to US fans, Witter hasn't been in any.
This has nothing to do with profile. This is because Roy Jones and Evander Holyfied are both shot and give performances that tell you they are clearly former shadows of their once greats selves - who have either been sparked out or dropped in their last meaningful fights.stujones wrote: Look at Roy Jones, one time legend - last fight was on a minor PPV station (CSS) in a tiny arena. And in fact Roy Jones and Evander Holyfields' last couple of fights have been against nobodies, they were so unknown their own mom's didnt even know who they were. You cant fool the public, the people Jones and Holyfield are currently fighting are fighters that they would never have dreamed of even stepping into the same ring with during their primes.

Are you seriously trying to suggest that his fight with Judah has made him a hot property? His reputation was wrecked by that fight, and it killed his chances in America, because he badly embarrassed Judah, Showtime and Jay Larkin, who were hoping for a showcase fight for their new brooklyn star.liamlion wrote:Hold on a minute. True, although part of the reason why Holyfield's last two fights have been against nobodies (I do dispute Oquendo though) is because no promoter wants to touch him so getting the fights is proving difficult. I am sure if Holyfield could get a world title fight immediately after Donald he would have taken it.liamlion wrote:This has nothing to do with profile. However, you point is valid - but Johnny Nelson wasn't shot when he was shunted out of the UK - and he was a world class fighter for a country who lacks them. If the US executives have got hold of Witter's tapes post Judah they cannot be too convinced that the Judah performance was a one off and he never looks this negative.
Even Floyd Mayweather went through a stage (and winning against quality fighters) when Vegas didn't want him and US TV executives were contimplating dumping him (they did stop him being a PPV fighter). This was for his dull series of fights vs Chavez, Castillo x 2 and Sosa. Only his performance vs Phillip N'dou saved him.
1) It was 8 years ago, most US fans would have forgotton who he is.liamlion wrote:Certainly not. But after the Judah fight Witter's stateside profile went throught the roof - before the fight nobody knew him, afterwards the same couldnt be said. Whether Witter is known for the wrong reasons, doesnt detract from the fact that he has higher profile than Urango and Maussa.
2) Was Tyson vs Francis that big an event - it wasn't shown live (cause the main event was on a decent hour over year). Was it as big as Gatti vs Mayweather? Certainly not as current.
3) The only profile he had from that fight was to turn off the TV.

Very few outside the hardcore knew Collazo, Urango and Maussa. No one knew Collazo on US boxing boards so he was definately a no name, anyone who saw Maussa could see he was a poor journeyman level standard - anyone who hadnt wouldnt have heard of him, URango - again very few on US Boards had seen him fightstujones wrote:Juan Urango has been shown on US TV on a few occasions - aside from the Urango and Arnoutis fights.
Both Luis Collazo's world title fights were showcased as part of an undercard to a very decent bills. Miguel Angel Gonzalez is a decent name aswell.
Carlos Maussa's upset win over Vivien Harris was also shown as part of another big bill. .
These are actual boxing fans not knowing these fighters so they are meaningless fights in terms of a name. Witter is a far bigger name than all 3 of those fighters.
To pretend those nobodys are bigger names than Witter is being a Hatton applogist at the highest level
It is hard to sell a fighter who has stunk out the place, in front of a big audience.
However Witter has since gone on to win the European title, in which he had a run of something like 15 consecutive stoppages. The man has also gone onto WBC honours, he adapted his style and punches a lot harder. He decisioned N'Dou (considered a possible opponent for Hatton, by team Hatton and HBO) in an entertaining fight after knocking him down for the first time in his career...
Genuinely it is simply not true to say that Witter is less known stateside than Maussa or Urango. For example...over the last 18 months on World boxing websites (ie Secondsout.com), in Ring Magazine etc - whenever a list of possible opponents for Hatton have been discussed, Witter's name has constantly been mentioned. The same can not be said of Urango or Maussa!
Stujones what do you think are the reasons for Hatton fighting Urango?

The titles are irrelevant, all the TV execs are going to think is "Is this fighter PPV worthy, and what are his demands. Witter's camp have said they want purse parity if they are going to fight Hatton, and so they are pricing themselves too high already.
I agree that the Urango fight seems pretty pointless, seeing as it looks like Hatton may well ditch the belt after the castillo fight, although a fight against N'dou isn't so bad as a routine defence, provided it is not INSTEAD of a Castillo fight.
I guess that Hatton and Castillo just wanted a mark time opponent before the big one, nothing too challenging, merely a warm up. Castillo almost choked on his tune up however.

Are you sure? In his last three fights, when the calibre of Hatton's opposition has been questioned Hatton's basically justified the fight by pointing to the fact that he is challenging a genuine world champion for their belt.jamesmcdonnell wrote:The titles are irrelevant...

Personally ive heard nothing of this, but I take your word for it. However I have read the lead article at the head of this topic and Witter does address the issue of money, he's prepared to take a winner-takes-all.jamesmcdonnell wrote:Witter's camp have said they want purse parity if they are going to fight Hatton, and so they are pricing themselves too high already

When discussing fights it's always important to ask which market you want to tap into. The UK market is one such market and with two world title holders from Britain in the same division going head to head, in a grudge match that's been talked about for 6 years...If a boxing promoter cannot promote that, then they should be in a duifferent business.
I don't think Ricky's American adventure goes much further. Castillo may knock him out or punich him so badly that the awesomely tough N'dou (and quite well schooled) N'dou might finish him off.
Without an unbeaten record and a belt what is Hatton in America? He won't be any good in a Gatti or Micky Ward way because his fights don't have sustained 2way action.
He may still have his personality but even if he's nice as pie beforehand his grab style is off putting.
There will be a PHASE II in Hatton's career and I think Witter may fit into this.

Yes, you could well be right, but I doubt it would be N'dou to finish him off. We may be surprised at how well Hatton does against Castillo. Hopefully, Hatton has realised that if he is going to make the most of what should be his prime, he needs to sort out his diet, twice now he's had chest infections, once against Vilches, and now against Urango, he's looked listless too against Maussa and was out on his feet against Collazo.
He needs to locate in the states for 12 weeks before a fight, rather than going over there at the end, he needs to be physically and mentally settled over there prior to the fight. After fighting at home for so much of his career, he is being taken out of his comfort zone, and isn't helping himself by having such appalling habits between fights. He is past the age where there are no consequences to be paid for a profligate lifestyle of excess, and hopefully he now knows this.
Would Hatton swallow his pride though and come 'cap in hand' to Witter.
Hatton for my money, is something of an overachiever in any case, as good as he is, he has always had exploitable flaws as a fighter, but he has used his assets to their best extent.
Hatton won't be cutting any corner for the Castillo fight, let's wait and see how he looks in that before writing him off.
I've always got the impression that Hatton will get out of the sport if he feels he doesn't have it any more, I think he is realistic enough to quit if he takes a solid drubbing in the ring.

I like the sound of that too!
I really hope Hatton-Witter does happen & soon. Can't help thinking Hatton is getting rather annoyed by all the talk coming from Witter.
It would be a good fight to be at. I think it would be some-wjhat of a grudge fight. Both, clearly do not like each other.
Whatever the outcome, I think it would be a very competetive fight.
Fancy Ricky to win though.
Yeah, i agree Hatton v Castillo in my opinion is a good fight. Castillo is good opponent and I look forward to the fight. However thats not really whats been the issue of debate...in all honestly its more appropriate to ask did Hatton v Urango or Hatton v Collazo or Hatton v Maussa genuinely 'trump the Witter fight on every level'? They simply didnt!Terence wrote:This is probably going to go on for ever but, without wanting to be accused of bias, Hatton-Castillo trumps the Witter fight on every level.

With respect, that is utter horse-shite. Witter has been calling out Hatton for nearly 7 years - before Hatton was even British Champion. There is nothing remotely Johnny-come-lately about Witter calling out Hatton at the present.

When you get on HBO's website - watch the trailer for the Urango-Hatton fight. HBO literally promoted and sold the fight as a Hatton warm up for a potential super-fight with Castillo!!! Not once are you shown a shot of Urango, and literally his name is mentioned only once or possibly twice in the entire trailer.
HBO's marketing of the fight tells you everything about Urango's value to the fight - and no it isnt his marquee attraction. His face was not even put on the fight posters. Castillo had more to do with selling Urango's fight with Hatton, than Urango actually did!
To insinuate or even claim that Urango has a bigger profile than Witter, and that he was some sort of big attraction going into his fight with Hatton is simply false. Urango didnt get this fight because of his name, or his profile, or his ticket-selling - he only got the fight with Hatton for the simple reason that he had the fortune of being handed the IBF belt in his previous fight with Ben Rabah.
Isnt it sad that in Ricky Hatton's quest for Global domination, we still dont actually know who is the best light-welterweight in Britain.Terence wrote:One thing Witter fans need to get straight is that it is fair for them to cry about the fact Witter has now picked up a belt but you cannot then throw in the Collazo and Maussa fights because at that point Witter was struggling to beat British and modest European opponents and had no title belt so what gives.Yeah, i agree Hatton v Castillo in my opinion is a good fight. Castillo is good opponent and I look forward to the fight. However thats not really whats been the issue of debate...in all honestly its more appropriate to ask did Hatton v Urango or Hatton v Collazo or Hatton v Maussa genuinely 'trump the Witter fight on every level'? So in short yes they, Maussa and Collazo, trumped a Witter fight on every level! In terms of titles and scope. Witter has been asked by TV execs, pundits, fans and other fighters to raise his game and impress and cannot, or refuses, to do so on numerous occasions. Where, then, does he get the right to a big fight? Colin Farrell and Sienna Miller keep telling the world what fine actors they are but we remain sceptical until they produce a decent performance let alone a decent film, for that read Witter.
With equal respect this is hairy horse-shit. Witter called for the fight after two of Hatton's biggest, toughest, wins yet did not actually deserve a fight at either time. The cry has become ever more vocal simply because Witter has bombed at every level in the intervening years and the only press he gets is when Hatton is mentioned. In many ways Witter's last fight was sold, or failed to sell, off the name of Hatton. Why are you Witter fans not voting with your feet and getting out to support this acquired boxing taste? With respect, that is utter horse-shite. Witter has been calling out Hatton for nearly 7 years - before Hatton was even British Champion. There is nothing remotely Johnny-come-lately about Witter calling out Hatton at the present.
Hatton told me last year that he would accomodate Witter if he a) won a title and b) raised his game. He is yet to do the second part, Hatton has a map leading to Castillo right now and Witter is nowhere near that level of boxing, his title fight was quite poor. The irony is that after two of Hatton's biggest wins Witter was pouring scorn on the results yet he then put in a laughable world-title winning fight that barely warranted a comment. Hatton stated, clearly, that Witter needs to up his game yet Junior is still deteriorating, why was this super-fit fighter complaining between rounds in his last fight?
Witter thinks boxing owes him a payday, perhaps he owes boxing a performance instead of hanging onto another fighter for his cash-in fight.
I never insinuated that Urango is bigger than Witter, someone, I think it was you, said he fought non-profile fights in the US and this is bollox in truth. Maybe your versions of Eason, Arnaoutis and Hernandez differ from mine but in all three Urango was well-supported and put on decent scraps that had the commentators very happy about him.Really? Then why did so many of Urango's 'big fan-base' fail to turn up at The Paris Hotel to support him against Hatton

Did you hear the boos that went up for Hatton in the final rounds? They were Urango's fans, the Hatton fans simply drowned them out but Juan does have support due to his exciting style and ethnic background.
HBO promote name fighters but the crux is that Urango's highlight reel was more exciting than Witter's and would feature more US-friendly names than Witter's highlights, beyond his lower-level KO's Witter brings highlights of him almost blowing the N'dou fight and looking awful against Zab and Corley.
HBO worked with Witter once, they did not even think about inviting him over for this double-header party, why is that?
Witter needs to stop talking about Hatton and start talking his next fight up, then if he actually produces he may get a big fight.
When all is said and done, at least we all know which one of the two actually wants the fight, and which one doesnt - if nothing else Hatton and his fans cant accuse Witter of avoiding the fight. Shame the same cant be said of Hatton!

So non on the US boxing boards you visited watched the undercard of Gatti vs Mayweather - some fans these were then.
No one knew Collazo? Again, you must visit different forums to me cause I was often brought into conversations about James Hare and Eamonn Magee and their styles in relation to a potential fight with Collazo - never was muted but people were just looking at the rankings hypothetically.
Urango is a slightly different matter, but achieved some recognition albeit negative as the "guy who got lucky vs Rabah" and the guy whose got Ricky Hatton's title.
Witter on the forums I went was heard of, but only as the "bum from England" - When I was talking to British members of US forums regarding Witter vs Hatton (and I actually thought Witter would win at the time) the US forum members would think I was crazy. Hatton wasn't getting much attention either - but it was all positive except for the "when is he going to step it up".
Liamlion.
Can't understand the Urango fight, I was very dissapointed - not making any excuses. However, only thing I can think is that it was considered a tool to make Hatton vs Castillo bigger (ala Sturm vs DLH / Hopkins vs Allen) plus with the IBF title on the line. Obviously, the summer fight doesn't sound like it will be for the title and that oversight by Team Hatton isn't called for.

Castillo is a good fight that can't be denied but its a calculated risk by the Hatton camp as Castillo offers the easiest fight of all the 'names' Hatton could fight. But he may then fight N'dou... nobody not even you Terry can defend that and you are king of the Hatton defenders.
Answer this please mate, when Hatton beat Tszyu you must have thought he was really going to hit the bigtime. Honestly you must be disappointed with the way his career has gone since then. He's won belts but Maussa, Collazo, Urango is pretty dire when the talk post Tszyu was Mayweather, Cotto etc.

he looked very rusty early on against maussa and struggled both to find his range and get his shots off, he was also pretty lucky the ref didnt stop the bout on cuts.
collazo i thought won the fight, and although the judges didnt agree with me collazo at least won the moral victory by having ricky stagger around the ring in the last round like a drunk on ice skates. the bell couldnt have come soon enough for ricky in boston.
urango is a novice really but he really troubled ricky with body shots and the sight of hatton leaping at urango from 2 yards away and clinging on to him without throwing a shot on the way in was almost bizarre.
it was almost sad to see a fighter who used to really pride himself on his ability to turn the screw in the later rounds reduced to a `flying john ruiz`.
i used to brag on these boards to the yanks that hatton was the fittest fighter in boxing today, no one could match his ability to fight every second of every minute of every round.
somewhere along the line he`s lost the two main weapons in his armoury - his ability to break opponents will with accurate body shots and his ability to break fighters hearts by fighting at a terrific pace and sustaining it.
Witter has an ugly style and certainly isn't for the purists. He also needs to do something about switching stances every few seconds because I can't see the purpose in it. However, he is awkwardly effective and hits hard. He beat a fired up N'dou - who just made Rabah quit... (who boxed Urango's ears off..) - despite losing all the middle rounds, scraped by a skilled Kotelnik and in truth he won most of the rds vs Corley.
If he gets by the Harris-Lazcano winner, and maybe Demetrius Hopkins, we can say for sure that he's a top level fighter regardless of what he looks like.
Hatton has ducked Witter and I think if Hatton looked vulnerable versus fine fighters Thaxton and Magee, he would look like shit against Witter. I also think Witter would beat him because he's kept himself in better nick and has more desire for the all British fight. Witter must visualise the fight all the time whereas all Hatton has to do is get someone to write a dismissive press release or make something up on the fly when a camera and mice is pointed at him.
Certainly Castillo is more important for Hatton globally. Castillo could end Hatton's run with those body shots. Hatton used to take a great shot if he was controlling the pace (Tszyu) but he seems to have lost that. When a fighter of Ricky's style starts losing steam it is time to worry.
The time may soon come when Hatton asks Witter for a title fight.

Not sure what the other Hatton "nuthuggers" are suggesting, but for me he only needs the Lazcano/Harris winner (especially if its in the states) and he IS there as an established and threatening world champion who should be on TV regardless of style. I'm sure Lazcano/Harris are good enough to make it a decent fight also - but that will be irrespective.viciousmaussa wrote:Witter has an ugly style and certainly isn't for the purists.
However, he also has Castillo as a possible next opponent (if Hatton does accomodate Ndou next) - again an ideal opportunity and then a potential Hatton vs Witter fight will be a unification and not just for Witter's WBC title.
