Shane Mosley - holyfielditis?

Post by jamesmcdonnell »

Shane's just said he wants to fight for '5 or 6 more years' Is the guy nuts? Mosley's already taken a lot of punishment in his career, especially in those two fights with Forrest, and he wants to fight on until he is 40!

Funny people say that, but Mosley has slipped significantly further than Oscar has judging by his slothful movement and reduced punch output over the last few years.

Interesting theory Terrence. Has he had any kind of serious back injury in the past, or are you suggesting that with age his spine is just less flexible than it was, christ, I know mine is.

Are we underating his Vargas wins, Vargas did look horrible in the second fight but in the first fight was pressuring Mosley well. Remember prior to losing to Mosley Vargas beat Castillijo who ko'd Sturm recently.

Mosleys fought quite a few bigger fighters and many great fighters. It will be interesting to see how he does against Welterweights. Estrada and Cruz he didnt shine against but he beat them and their both top20 opponents. Mosley could outbox, outspeed or just KO Collazo who isn't a defensive genius by any means.

I don't think that there's any way that Mosley can go on at the level he's currently fighting at for another couple of years, let alone five or six.

I said a couple of years ago that I thought that almost everything that marked Mosley out as a great fighter rather than a very good one had left him. I've seen nothing recently to make me revise that opinion. As James says; his workrate has dropped off, the blistering speed has gone, and there are plenty of miles on the clock. He's barely a shadow of the excellent lightweight force of nature that he once was. He can still look good against someone who's prepared to stand in front of him, but when he faces a bit of lateral movement and decent handspeed, or even someone with a better than average workrate, then he's going to have problems.

Collazo will give him a very tough fight I feel. Maybe a defeat against someone who's outside the highest level will make Shane rethink going on 'till forty.

Undoubtedly his speed has dimished - is it due to the alledge steriod use? Possibly, but people often forget he wasn't that young when he faced DLH the first time (his true breakthrough fight) and he was pushing 32/33 when he was visibly slowing - so it could be just due to age and weight gain (if steriods were involved we don't know). Another factor could be the loss of Jack Mosley as his trainer for some fights. He certainly looked quicker vs Vargas in the rematch with Daddy back on board. I know they used to do some unique training tactics (I think they used to call it speed power) perhaps with the losses to Forrest, he stopped believing in its success and tried something new.

I think Collazo will be too much, but he knows how to handle himself. He has got good defensive instincts - so while I think he should already be contimplating retirement - I don't think he will get beat up - Forrest beat him pretty bad, but it was the one shot that left Mosley unbalanced for rounds.

He is certainly a throwback, absolutely loves fighting. He seems to be having fun even in tough fights.

Alot of people forget what a lightweight Mosely was, would have been a great fight if him and Whiteker were around at the same time.

Seems amazing that for all his skills , Mosely lost to Forrest because of Forrests jab.

Mosley has lost a significant amount of speed, it is alarming to see a man once so reliant on lightning combinations now slow and slothlike as some suggest. Whatever the reason he is a shadow of the man he was and i predict Collazo to beat him handily.

People on ESB told me that Molsley after weigh Ins at Lightweight used to go Into the ring at 159 pounds. :-?

He walked Into the ring at 159 In the Vargas rematch so how was this possible to put 24 pounds of water weight on when he was a Lightweight?

I know he fought against a level below what he was but that year between beating DLH the first time and losing to Forrest he looked absolutely awesome, those ko's he scored were sensational.

I think he still has bit left to offer for sure although talk of another 6/7 years in the game is strange.

I suppose if he's a clean living chap like Hopkins he could go on operating at world class for that time?

The training you talked about they call Power Boxing. Is it really that much different to what other fighters train though? I'd be surprised if it was.

Fairly likely.

He was working with people from the BALCO steroid labs and testified along with several other athletes to a grand jury investigating BALCO giving out illegal performance inhancers to top athletes.

Mosley was linked to a BALCO lab in Burlingame California.

shane mosley's career will forever hold a great boxing mystery for me. why, after dominating the lightweight division so comprehensively, did he never even lace on a pair of gloves at lightwelter (where he could have been the best ever in that class) before embarking on a career at welter and heavier which has for me and many others been tinged with disappointment?

You have to admit that Mosley rolled back the years last night.

His speed and workrate were fanastic. I thought Collazo had got him at the right time and was going to administer a steady beatdown but it seems Mosley Snr really knows how to get the best out of his son.

I reckon he's certainly got 2 more great fights in him on this showing.

he didn't fight the best challengers at 135. Never faced Johnston, Nazarov, Castillo, or good fighters Mendy, Bazan, George Scott, etc.

I was totally wrong as usual, thought Mosley was prime fopr the taking. Fair play to him for a great performance and definately in the Welterweight mix big time...would love to see him face the winner of DLH-Mayweather which i think will be Mayweather but i am sure Oscar would a third crack and the chance to gain revenge.

Given DLH new relationship with Mosley (with GBP) I doubt it would happen. Most people thought he gained revenge in the rematch.

Mind you, never thought Hopkins and Winky would fight given both of their close links outside of the ropes.

Looks to me that Mosley-Cotto is hard to make with the GBP-Arum feud. Possibly the best fight out there. Add Mosley-Margarito to that scrapheap too. I reckon it's Mosley-Cintron for the IBF, or of course Mosley challenging Mayweather's WBC title.

One I'd like to see is Mosley-Travis Simms up at junior middle, but then again why put yourself through that nightmare again (back in Wright territory).

Hasn't Mosley just won the vacant WBC belt? Arrum-Golden Boy fights would be huge, currently there stopping:

Mosley just won the 'Interim' WBC belt, the reason it was the interim title being that PBF hasn't given the real title up, despite his next fight being at 154.

Oh, and also because the WBC just love interim champions it seems.

Makes sense as I'd expect Mayweather to come and defend his WBC 147lb belt if he doesnt retire after DLH. They made it look like a real Wbc title fight though

I agree it makes sense, because Mayweather hasn't made his intentions post-DLH clear. Like you, I expect him to come back to 147, so no point stripping him.

However, just you watch as Mayweather doesn't fight Mosley. Shane will defend that Interim title whilst Mayweather fights someone else for the 'real' title. The WBC won't be in any rush to make them fight each other.
