I liked to watch the kind of guys who would go for the knockout or get knocked out themselves.

James "Hard Rock" Green. The guy had the worst luck. He had Mugabi and Fletcher out on there feet, and got thumbed in the eye by Donald Curry.

Bert Cooper
Jessie Ferguson
Both fought many of the top contenders and both almost always lost. However each would occasionally get a big win and came close sometimes.

Jody Ballard (HW from the '70s).
Racked up a decent record against no names in the first half of his career. Then lost most of the rest of the way when he stepped up in competition, but always by decisions.

He also (if my memory serves me well) cut Larry Holmes in sparring which almost caused the Holmes vs Ali fight to be delayed.

How about Peter Buckley? Not " of the past" but coming to the end of a remarkable career
279 fights, 31 wins
Always happy to fight at short notice, seldom loses on any thing but points. Always knows his role. i.e. give a good account of himself and lose to a new pro

I was going to mention him and thought the same thing ... too obvious.

Another name that comes to mind is HW Randy Neumann. Had wins over Jimmy Young and Pedro Agosto. He later went on to be a referee.
