Some schools in England bring back boxing

Post by Dennis »

I am happy to see that there is a principal in England who is bringing amateur boxing back into the schools. Maybe we could do that in the U.S. too. Here is a link to an article about the boxing in the schools: http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/606/A19430624

Hey. Dennis. I found the article quite interesting.

Of course, I'm old school. I've been out of the loop for some years now since the rules and regulations have changed in boxing. The sport has sure softened a lot since the time I was there (1960s and 1970s) especially in the amatuer ranks it's softened a lot.

You can get torn up in football, I'm suprised they don't ban it too from schools in America.

Times have changed. People think very differently about things today.

There are more injuries in football, hockey, gymnastics and cheerleading than in amateur boxing. Soccer players frequently get concussions from heading the ball and colliding with other players and they don't wear head protection. Yet, all of those sports are mainstream and are high school sports. I applaud the people in London. Here in the U.S. some colleges are now allowing boxing again as a club sport. If it ever became a collegiate sport that included scholarships at the top level, you would see many more youngsters getting into the sport.

I would love it if they would put boxing in schools here in the US. Not just for the sport. Boxing is about discipline. Something that seems to be lacking among the video game generation.

Unfortunately it will never happen...

I agree its likely to never happen.

There was a time is which boxing was a very popular sport, and was second to only baseball. But today, its come now to be an obscure sport. If the anti boxing lobby had their way boxing would have been banned many years ago.

I find it amazing that wrestling, hockey and football are OK for the schools, but boxing is not. I keep hoping that it will become more mainstream and I do everything I can to help the sport.

Something about getting punched in the face... makes people cringe. They don't think about some of the elbows that get thrown around in wrestling. Or kids getting picked up and dropped on their necks. And football... The list just goes on. Boxing's really not all that dangerous when you think about it.

In fighting you got to be in shape both mentally and physically or your no good. But not all punches hurt! Sometimes fans may watch a fight and see what may had appeared to be a really wicked punch thrown that hurt the guy, but it really didn't hurt at all. In boxing, in a fight you can often be so focused and so busy in the ring with what your doing, that you don't feel sometimes even punches that may had been solid punches.

Many punches don't hurt during the bout or during sparring, but sometimes you will feel the bruise the next day! LOL!

Yes, but remember we weren't required to wear protective head gear in fights in the amatuer ranks in my time there, and we worn smaller gloves too and that can make for a little difference. But I enjoyed my time there.
