At last, someone not afraid to speak out

Post by bennie »

Came across this piece in The Sporting Life. Remember the name of this guy, he knows his stuff.

HATTON NEEDS TO MOVE IT ALONG
By Mark Staniforth, PA Sport

Ricky Hatton is set to make what seems like the 'millionth' defence of his WBU light-welterweight title against Aldo Rios next month.

Rios was considered mere late replacement material when he sat gloved up in a Manchester dressing room four months ago in case Vince Phillips did not show.

He must have done something pretty spectacular in the meantime, because suddenly he is an accomplished and highly-ranked double world title challenger who will give Hatton all the trouble he can cope with.

Actually he is a man unsuited to any kind of furthering of Hatton's career.

He is a lightweight who has stopped just six of his previous 37 opponents inside the distance. In other words Hatton cannot possibly lose.

It is high time Hatton proved his ambition and ditched both his too-comfortable Manchester Evening News Arena home and his too-convenient title.

His choice is easy money or true greatness, and it is high time he made a decision for the good of himself and for all those who continue to follow him and hope.

this is the same reason y boxing is on the dwnfall.back in the day we had quality british matchups like eubank benn lennox bruno all being household names who fought on live terrestrial TV for REAL world titles.now we are treated to WBU defences of a meaningless belt n hatton facing a guy that was a SUB for phillips all being on (frank warrens channel) SKY.im sick to death of seeing so called "world class fights" dressed up as WBF WBU IBO or WBO title fights.im not a lay person to boxing n nor am i the casual fan who doesnt know the difference.bring back mills lane late night boxing on ITV with reg gutteridge and dicky davies ahhhh those were the days. ricky hatton is a fraud as is joe calzaghe.they r britains number 1 comfort fighters trying to talk the talk but failing to walk the walk.thats y british fighters r seen as a joke..

bennie - I thought spudmin had kidnapped you or worse!

Good to see you and all the other ESB regulars on here.

The records on here are amazing, I don't imagine the long serving Fight Fax is keeping pace with this?

Very true article about Hatton, sporting life are almost always on the money.
It's just too easy for him at this tin-pot belt level - for a guy who really admires Roberto Duran, he must be frustrated at warren's OTT protection, not really letting him prove himself at world level.

The football fans who turn up to his fights don't really know the difference either, most likely never even heard the real champs called Kostya Tszyu.
Leaving warren to keep making cash with his paper tiger.

Hi Rocket, Glad you made it. This forum is good, I came here when secondsout folded too.

It's got to be like 1984 over at ESB -

Spudmin's turned into some sort of tin-pot god - he seems to be going into meltdown!
Could'nt believe his new best mate J Nelson rant, just ridiculous...

Someone should PM lightsoot to come over here instead - it's not so cramped!
All we're ending up with at ESB is a load of Hennisey press releases :o

The only thing I don't like about ESB is Spud. He's just spoiled it for a lot of people over there. I still answer the questions his posts ask with my opinion but will never acknowledge him personally ever again.

In fact, I wouldn't mind knowing whether Admin(ie Spud) reading personal messages is actually against the Data Protection Act. For a starter, my PMS to Bennie was a question about a Mick Hennessey Sports. All of a sudden then I get this personal message from Admin with three emoticons shaking their hands at me in a 'no no no' fashion. No explanation about why. Absolutely outrageous.

Hi Dealster,

I also got a 'like it or lump it' response but wasn't banned. Spudmin's got way out of hand if you ask me.

Good to see you hear Dirt. Agreed Spudmin should take a look at himself before going off on his righteous rants.

People are still pointing out to him on ESB that he's out of order.

Back to the thread at hand.

I have to disagree with the original post. Rick Hatton has NEVER called himself a proper world champion and to Sky's credit while they label it a WBU world title fight, they often note that Kostya Tszyu is the proper world champion.

Hatton is still a young man, who unfortunately his style of fighting invariably means that he's not going to have a long career. I think this pattern of 1 hard fight, one easy one has been going on for a few years and for now I don't mind this fight, with his style I doubt if he's going to be around in his 30's so let him make a bit of cash before going for Tszyu. Also with that cut he had, it probably wise that he has got an easy night THIS TIME.

Next Year he does need to start pushing it, I know its sounds like a contraction but I think he's still learning but also knows he's probably only got 5 good years left in the game - any easier fight will help prolong his career and also help his development.

Billy Graham has said that Hatton will open out in 2004, we've only got 4 months to wait. Lets hope he's correct.

I welcome all of the guys who have posted here, I hope you continue to post and contribute. Not saying this in a dirogetory sense to ESB, but a competion is not always a bad thing and I think people can post on both sites should they wish.

The start this site has had is great, lets hope its continues its momentum.
