Little Help? - OG qualifiers
Little Help? - OG qualifiers
This is my first post in the amateur forum, and I swear I've some research, but I'm still stumped.
I'm looking for the definitive word on how a boxer from the american continent (specifically Canada) gets to qualify for The Olympics.
As far as I understand, you're in if you make it to the Pan-American Games (for which one also has to qualify) finals, or if you win one of two continentals qualifiers (although Canada is not supposed to send a team to the second qualifier). Which leaves me with a couple of questions.
1. Are the continental qualifiers in 2007 or in 2008? Also, Where are they?
2. How in the world could Canada not send people to the first Pan-Am qualifier? I understand that 2007 canadian team was not set, but still (this is more of a comment than a question, I know).
Thanks for any info.

In response to lap. As you already know, Canada has just selected their National A Team. They missed the first Pan Am qualifier in February. Not such a bad thing, Americans and Cubans are mostly out of the picture for the next Qualifier in March. We have this Tournament and another chance to qualify for the Pan Am Games. A medalist at the Pan Am Games will qualify for the Olympics. There will be two more Olympic qulifiers for the Americas in early 2008. (I think) Canada is having their Nationals in December of 2007 because of the Olympic qualifiers.

Ok, I'll try to explain this because there are some misunderstandings.
The Pan American Games are NOT an Olympic qualifier this time. They were last time out, in 2003.
The first Olympic Qualifier will be the World Championships in Moscow 15-30 september. Eight boxers in every weight will qualify (all quarter-finalists). Every continent will then have two other qualifiers (except Oceania who will have only one) in 2008. So America will have two qualifiers next year with the remaining spots on stake. Hope this will clarify.

They are now going to the Independence Cup in Dominican Republic, with their No 1 team which include the eight qualified boxers for the Pan Ams.
Wow. That's the first I heard about that. Make sense, though.locoxelbox wrote:Ok, I'll try to explain this because there are some misunderstandings.

Lap, you might want to email CABA through their web site and see if they will post information pertaining to Canadian boxers qualifying for the Olympics.
Any idea how they are going to select the team for the Worlds?(I think) Canada is having their Nationals in December of 2007 because of the Olympic qualifiers.
CABA hasn't updated its site in ages, so I don't figure they'll be much help.boxmel wrote:Lap, you might want to email CABA through their web site and see if they will post information pertaining to Canadian boxers qualifying for the Olympics.

As for the Canadian team, do they get to sens a full squad? In any case, the Box-offs were held last week-end, so the national team is set. If you want, I can compile the list for you.
No kidding! Last national team listed was in 2005. Their site used to be much better.CABA hasn't updated its site in ages, so I don't figure they'll be much help.

Well - thank you for your interest and willingness to get out amateur boxing information.Nah, I'm a bit of a boxing writer here in Montreal, so I try to keep up with everything on the local scene.
I used to coordinate a tournament in Southern California where we would get teams from Canada (BC, Alberta and Sask.) every year. Loved the Canuks, eh! Had such notables as Manny Sobral and Donnie Orr compete, as well as many of the national-level boxers in the 90's. Made some good friends across the border, plus hubby was raised in Abbotsford, BC, which helped since he could speak Canadian.

Hey Mel, its been awhile. Most of the Team are from Ontario and Quebec, except for Arash Usmanee, he is from Alberta. He boxed at the Blue and Gold when he first started boxing - 1998. Boxed Adam Carerra when he only had 5 bouts. Now he is a 3 time Senior Champion. Light fly, flyweight, middle weight, heavy and super heavy are all new to senior team. I beleive they are all scheduled to attend Pan Am trials in Argentina. I am unsure of the Olympic qualifier, I thought it was the same as 2003, Pan Am Games was first qualifier?
And just who is Blackeye 84?
No, Pan Ams are not an Olympic qualifier this year. The Worlds will be, in September. And, of course, the Continental qualifiers in 2008. I usually get to Tijuana, Mexico for the finals.
Oh my gosh! Arash was a JO then - maybe around 10 or 11 years old? Who's club was he with - Calgary? Or Edmonton? Glad to hear he's been so successful - and I'm surprised you remembered he boxed Adam. Speaking of memories......good ones, too.except for Arash Usmanee, he is from Alberta. So, September in Moscow is the First Olympic qualifier? That will make it more difficult for the boxers from the Americas. I was there at the Worlds in 1989. In fact our old buddy, Bruce Carrington was on the Canadian Team for the Worlds then. Do you know where the qualifiers will be for the Americas in 2008?

The President of Boxe Québec just confirmed to me, as locoxelbox posted, that the World Chamnpionships are an Olympics qualifier, while the Pan-Ams are not.
The difference is that he seems to think that the Worlds qualify only 4 boxers per weight class.
Actually, locoxelbox theory seems to make more sense. Something like :
- 8 boxers from the Worlds
- 2 additional boxers each form Europe, Asia and America
- 1 additional boxer each from Africa and Oceania
And you have your 16-boxer olympic field.

Seems to me that Olympic Games excepts 32 boxers in each weight category up to Heavyweight. Heavy and Superheavy have 24 athletes at Olympics.
Mel, Allan was doing some officiating also, but I have not seen him in a while, come to think of it I have not seen Bruce at a major competition yet this year.
Mel, I had a Superheavy back in the day, he beat David Bostice at the Blue and Gold. We were there several times. I am not teasing just testing your memory.

Very glad to hear Allan "came back" to amateur boxing. He was one of my favorite Canadians. :) Well - it's only the second month of the year, so Bruce may show up yet. Please tell them both hello if you see them.Mel, Allan was doing some officiating also, but I have not seen him in a while, come to think of it I have not seen Bruce at a major competition yet this year.
Ummmm - Doug? Dale? You should realize that by now, at my advancing age, the memory is shortening. I was much younger in the 90's.Mel, I had a Superheavy back in the day, he beat David Bostice at the Blue and Gold. We were there several times. I am not teasing just testing your memory.
