I don't think the Olympics "seed" anyone. It's usually a blind draw. I could be wrong.

That's even weirder. That would mean that four totally randomly chosen boxers start the tourney in the second round

Yep. There will be some who get a bye in the first round.

Yes, 28 is not a good number but AIBA hadn't any choice, they had to cut down the number of participants.
For the first time the draw for the Olympics will be held a month prior to the competition so the boxers will have time to prepare for their specific opponents.

And hope that no one gets sick or hurt between the draw and the competition. :o Will be interesting to see how it works.

If someone gets sick or hurt, they might have to have another draw so that someone does not get two or more byes in a row.

Not a "might" but a "for sure, " depending on the number of entries in the weight class.

I believe the rules don't allow two WO wins for one boxer. They must redo the draw.

No boxer may receive a bye in the first round and a walkover (WO) in the round or two consecutive WOs if either the bye or WO occurs in a medal round. Should this happen, a redraw will be made of the other boxers remaining in the round who have not received a bye or WO in the preceding round. The first boxer drawn will meet the boxer who has benefited from a bye or WO in the preceding round and the new draw will then proceed normally.

Alright, so if I cross-reference this post :
locoxelbox wrote:Ok, I'll try to explain this because there are some misunderstandings.
The Pan American Games are NOT an Olympic qualifier this time. They were last time out, in 2003.
The first Olympic Qualifier will be the World Championships in Moscow 15-30 september. Eight boxers in every weight will qualify (all quarter-finalists). Every continent will then have two other qualifiers (except Oceania who will have only one) in 2008. So America will have two qualifiers next year with the remaining spots on stake. Hope this will clarify.
With this one :
locoxelbox wrote:There are 28 boxer on each weight from 48 kg up to 81 kg. 91 and 91+ have 16 boxers.
That means that half of the heavies and super-heavies for the Olympics are selected at the championships. Is that so or could it be that only 4 guys are selected at these weights?

And I have another question. How many spots does the American continent get for the contential qualifiers? Maybe two apiece, for a total of four?

Six places available in each weight division for boxers from the Americas: apart from the 81kg, 91kg and over 91kg divisions where there will be three places.
