Ike "The President" Ibeabuchi's status??
Is Ike Ibeabuchi still in jail or a mental hospital? I know he got in a lot of trouble years ago. Does anyone out there know his current status?
He really looked dominant back in his bouts with Tua & demolition of Chris Byrd. It's a shame his career was derailed just when it seemed he was ready to be champ. His KO of Chris Byrd will always stick out in my mind. Byrd is a boring fighter, but very tough to hit. Ike Ibeabuchi really caught him. He had power, skill & speed.
If he's not still institutionalized I hope is life is back on track.

I heard he wasnt coming out of jail until 2010.
Every once in a while there's always some fan out there who goes on about Ike Ibeabuchi saying that he could have been champion, and mostly the hopes he'd make a comeback.
I think his mental state is ok, has been for a while, but even if he does get out by 2010 or earlier, let's face it he'd be too old. Whatever 'The President' has done in boxing he's done it, and he'd be truly insane if he does come back.
Course, I think a battle of the nut cases (McCall, Golota, Ibeabuchi, Bruno) might just sell!

insane why? Its not like there's any real threat in the heavyweight division aside from Klitchko and Peter, who personally I think he could beat both. He'll easily get ranked in the top 6 within 3 fights against C class opposition (Austin, Brewster, and Liakovich possibly). In all likelihood he'll be conditioned and hopefully his mental state will be stable. His age wouldn't deter his will and dominance nor would he fold like Tyson.
He's in the clink until at least December, which is when he's up for parole. If he misses that, I imagine thats another year or two before the next parole review.. but he could be in until 2014.

A thread on "He who we do not speak of"
Good job !
Careful though, there is no doubt an editor with his finger on the "lock" prompt as we speak.
He has already been Paroled on the battery charges, which means there is a good chance he will be paroled on the sexual battery charge get out in either December 07 or 08.
I have to wonder....if he gets out and doesnt fight, what exactly will he do ? There is no indication that he has a lot of options or marketable skills.
I know a lot of people just write him off a nutcase, and there is no doubt he was a very disterbed young man at the time of his arrest, but to me this was tragic.
I don't claim to have a crystal ball to know what his future in boxing would have been had he not lost his mind that night in Vegas, but no one can objectivly say this guy didnt have promise.
He beat Byrd and Tua back in the days when that meant something, and was on the doorstep of big things. I have no idea what those who claim he was one fight away from being "exposed" are basing that statement on, and frankly, I have never herd a rational explaination for it.
What he did was unexcusable, but I for one hate to see a young man crash and burn just when he is just about to make something of himself.

Ike For Vice President!?
If he doesn't go back to boxing, he will probably become a motivational speaker, or become a psychiatrist.cosand wrote:A thread on "He who we do not speak of"

But seriously, if he does get out in December, which I highly doubt, he would probably box again, and at least be a threat to "a" title, if he keeps his motions in check and loses some fat.
How long?
Just how long has this guy been off? Any athlete that has been away from a sport for a while can tell you that the lay off takes things away from you that you never regain even when you get back in shape. Personally, I took a few years off from basketball to concentrate on boxing. When I went back to shooting ball I had lost most of my lateral movement and 8-10'' off of my verticle leap. My cardio from years of boxing was head and shoulders over what it had been but my explosiveness was not anywhere near what it was. I'm several years younger than Ike so I tend to think that he has degenerated even more. Ike may come back but he won't be a huge force. Ali was off only 3 years in his 20's and came back a shell of his former self. Any ideas that a guy in his 30's can take 10 years off and come back to be a factor is a fairtytale. Wait, I think I just described Big George.

Tua won that fight,Ike got the decision.
It was close, but Tua for me.
Either way,as someone mentioned,Lewis made Tua look like a little fat dumpling when they fought. The Tuaman was hardly a great.
The most worrying thing about Ike was him getting dropped on a few occasions in sparring with Kirk Johnson.
Nuff said really.

Re: How long?
You can't compare boxing to basketball. The point is that lately boxing degenerated even more than youlongrob wrote:I'm several years younger than Ike so I tend to think that he has degenerated even more.
Even today at about 280 Ike would be serious threat to at least three of four "champs". I can't imagine he has worse stamina than Briggs and I can bet he is in better shape than Corey Sanders (who KO'd Maskaev long time ago).

I think the odd thing, which just goes to show how shitty our 'era' is, is how guys like Holyfield, McCall, Tyson, Moorer, Mercer are either still around or just recently quit---and all of those guys were near the top despite being a decade or so older than the current guys.
Ibeabuchi, looks on paper, that he could have been the next champion, but at that time Lewis was the top dog and the same guys I mentioned before and more others, were better than they are now---I dont see Ibeabuchi becoming champion back then, or at least not as quick as others think he could have.
But if he was in our time now, hell yeah he would, he'd be the undisputed champion of the world. But when or if he ever comes back to the ring, which is a possibility as he always goes on whenever he has the chance to talk to the press, that he'd come back---he'd need numerous tune ups against really soft opposition to even get back into rythem---its a long shot that he'd ever fight another top ten man again, let alone a title fight, let alone win.
He's been gone damn near a decade or more and it'll be longer by the time he gets out...boxing is a sport of time and let's face it, not everyone is a Larry Holmes or George Foreman and make successful comebacks into their 40's.
If anything, Ibeabuchi would be like Coetzee when he came back against Iran 'The Blade' Barkley---put up a few good rounds and then get destroyed.

Ibeabuchi has been inactive and overweight for years. He'll be pushing 40 by the time he puts gloves back on.
He'll end up like Tony Ayala. Squash a few bums then a legit contender will painfully educate him on the limitations of his age.
