He had a good defence and was durable. I think he was only stopped on cuts up until late in his career.

Bugner could pretty much take anyone the distance and if an opponent had a stamina issue then they'd be found out by Joe.

Bugner's main problem was his caution. At the top level he usually won rounds by edging them. He left a lot of people frustrated because he seemed to hold back offensively.

After the Cooper fight he played the part of pantomime villain in Britain. something he carried on when Bruno became popular. It allowed Bugner to remain a draw though.

Joe was a decent fighter however I don't think he always took the fight game too seriously. He fought some great fighters, losing twice to Ali on points, Joe Frazier on points, Ron Lyle on points (split decision) and Shavers (stopped in 2). He hurt Frazier and was famously photographed out hours after losing to Ali when Ali was suffering from exhausiton.

A fighter died after fighting Joe, Ulrich Regis, early in his career and many think Joe lost something when that happened.

By the time he fought Bruno he was 37 years old and after losing promptly retired although he made a comeback 8 years later !!

He had a fairly decent chin, quick hands, a decent dig and decent boxing ability. He was a bit too cautious though and maybe didn't take the sport as seriously as he should have.

"Could have done better" sums Bugner up I think.

The previous posts contain the key points. I'd just add that I saw Bugner fight a few times early in his career and he was a very well built, fit heavyweight with good skills and a KO punch. The Regis fight did take something away from him, and of course his win over Cooper (close and disputed, but IMO Bugner won) was manipulated into a "we don't really like him 'cos he got that decision over 'Enery" by the media.

His fights against Ali and Frazier probably summed up his career....not a bad fighter at all, but a little short of the very top. The Bugner that showed up to face Bruno was well past it, though he fought on ...and on... for many years after that. Would he have beaten Bruno at peak-versus-peak.... I'd give him a good chance.

Classic cautious boxer.... a scintillating personality ...a legend of the Ali golden era...... with limited punch power but tricky as hell... likend to a 'blonde adonis' he never fulfilled his tru potential

in the 80's there was an intriquing series of fights leading up (a few years later) to the Bruno -Bugner clash at White Heart Lane (i was there)

Bugner made another comeback in the early 80's ........and Bruno's camp matched their boy with the same opps thusly

Bugner KO 3 Winston allen

Bruno ko 2 Winston Allen

Bugner ko5 eddie Nielson

Bruno ko3 eddie nielson

a wonderful little PR battle....youth and power versus experience and ringcraft

Bugners next fight was against the fading vet Dino Dennis (he had a brutal fight with the unbeaten Gerry Cooney a few years previously).... Bugner came out from the first bell with the same fury as seen in the richard dunn slaughter.... and altho Dennis was well past it Bugner managed to pull out the biggest overhand right of his career....Dennis was obliterated ...

however the Bruno/ bugner super fight never materialised ....which was a shame ...it didnt happen of course til a good few years later... and was a mismatch by then

Bugner went on to campaign in Australia and ( i think was the first of the truly ancient heavyweights......even b4 Foremans exploits........in those days walcotts record age 38 was still considered OLD

bugners career had many different forms and shapes over decades..went the distance twice with Ali..... points loss to Smokin Joe and years later was outworked by frazier's featherweight boy Marvis..... durable as a tank Bugner was only stopped by huge punchers (such as Earnie Shavers)

Bugners record (like that of larry Holmes) is truly exceptional and tells pretty much the complete history of Hw boxing in the 70's 80's.

and love him or hate him...he was one of Hungary/britain/ australias tru legends :box:

It's strange that as durable as Bugner was he was ko'ed on his professional debut in the 3rd round.

Been away a while! Good to see the old crowd are still hanging around!

The thing that summed Bugner up for me was a fight with, I think, Danny Sutton. Usual Bugner, jab clinch, jab clinch, with the shoulders going up and head down in the usual Bugner style until.... Sutton quite blatantly butted Bugner, probably out of frustration himself. Bugner took a step back, pawed at his face to see if it was cut then took a half step forward and pole axed Sutton with a peach of a right hand. You just knew watching that spectacle that Bugner had that in his arsenal all along but was just content to fiddle his way through!

So much talent and potential wasted. Funnily enough I called Audley the second coming of Bugner but now that seems to flatter audley way too much!

The opponent was Winston Allen. You're right though, he got Bugner genuinely angry with the deliberate butt and Joe flattened him.

The winston Allen fight got the latest Bugner bandwagon rolling ( i believe it was Warrens first big attempt at promoting boxing ?

a cracking win over the aging Dennis...Joe appeared to have some fire in his belly at last...

and then an awful 9rd cuts win over Danny Sutton followed by a complete surrender to Marvis Frazier ...V frustrating.... could have got a real stab at Holmes !

he retired again and then went to Sweden/denmark ? for Palle Promotions .... took a gr8 win over ekland and then lost to Tangstad in a fight he would have won if he'd just put a bit of leather in

makes the Aforce frustration look positvly tame in comparison

Bugner had all the tools

Really!! Just shows as Harry Mullan once said "don't trust your memory" Why couldn't everybody have butted Bugner he could have been champ for years :TU:
