Amateur boxing trophy photo - 1920's

Post by Goldthorpe »

My great uncle Ed Tiernan boxed as an amateur in the early 1920's under the St. Bartholomew name. The church still stands today in NYC. I got a hold of his scrapbook and in it was an article about a silver loving cup given to the boxer with the most points. Up until recently I had never seen the trophy. I've posted a photo of the trophy here (notice the boxer profile near the bottom of the trophy) and I believe I know the whereabouts of the trophy along with another boxing trophy Edward won. If I can convince the person that now owns it, I'm considering having it displayed at St. Bart's or having it loaned to the Boxing Hall of Fame. Here's the article:

TWO TROPHIES ENOUGH FOR THIS AMATEUR PUG.
Ed Tiernan, metropolitan welterweight champion, is the most popular member of the old St. Bart's Club because of his genuine generosity. Each year, a silver loving cup is presented to the member scoring the largest number of points in outside competition. The Forty Second Street and Third Avenue organization celebrated its thirty third anniversary last night. Tiernan, who scored 130 points in 1924, was called upon to receive the cup. He stumped the large crowd when he refused to accept the same, stating that two cups were sufficient. He suggested that Harry Hessler, who was second with 63, be given the prize. They cheered Ed to the echo. Jack McDermott, 112 pounder, who was a member of the 1924 Olympic team was third with 61."
