Yep well done to Danny, for short spells in the fight he boxed really well.
But i think he still needs to have a long think before getting back into the ring, the workrate isn't there as it once was, and he himself admited after the fight he couldn't time his shots well.
I'd like Danny to retire, go out on a high.

Can see maybe the reason why he didn't take the fight though. Although losing but earning £100,000 is a bit better than what has happend.states wrote:Not as interesting (from Gammers point of view) as it would have been on primetime ITV, for £100,000. Gammer needs to get serious about his career - Go to America and work with the top trainers. He is still a white heavyweight after all.

I am so pleased for Danny. Nice to se Anthony Small in the ring supporting him as well. Two top blokes together.
I watched the fight at my local wit the sound off. What occurred to me mid way through the first is that Danny is terrible on the back foot now. Despite the 52lb weight loss his output was low until the finish.
He should fight on, but Fearon should get him moving both sides when under attack. He was always there to be hit back.
But, as I said in my previous posts Gammer was poor. Apart from the final flurry Williams won the fight with a single low handed jab.
Anyway, well done Danny, you brought the title back to its rightful place (london) The Welsh crowd should have shown you more respect.
I'm so pleased for Danny... in patches tonight he showed his best form for years... the hand speed was much better and he threw far more punches than he has done in recent fights... I really thought he was shot but if he carrys on and keeps the weight off then he's still got a future in there I think, the biggest problem is if he can get his head together and believe in himself or even if he really wants it anymore... if he cant give it 100% in the future then this would be a good time for him to quit...
I'd like to see Williams just have a go now. I thought the way he just came out for the 9th and let the shots go was bordering on world class, I don't think any other current British Heavy could let shots go like that, totally got Gammer out of there and probably could have done it earlier.
Just stay at that weight or around it and come out loose and let the leather fly. If I was Danny Williams I'd want to go out knowing I'd given it my best.
I'm not saying he would amount to much if he did adopt a hell for leather approach but I'd like to see him go out trying.

I have to agree with the assessment that stujones gave on another thread: Danny may not have controlled the fight from start to finish, but I think he knew early on that he was by far the more talented fighter. It was close on my card, but as soon as Williams decided to let rip the gulf in class was apparent. This is hardly the rebirth of Williams, but he showed tonight that he is, in flashes, better than domestic class. Maybe the oft-repeated claims of a world title shot for the winner of the Warren promoted British heavyweight merry-go-round wouldn't be so fanciful if Danny had kept himself in shape. On his night he's better than anything else Britain can offer.
Thought Gammer boxed well, but I got the feeling that the 8th round was 'Custer's' last stand and that it was a matter of time before Danny got him out of there.
Got to say, how impressed I was with both guys jabs - they were excellent.
Danny shouldn't be too hard on himself as Scott had excellent hand speed - Danny was probably used to bigger, slightly slower guys - well done Danny!!

Good to see Danny in shape. Good to see him at the level he belongs - domestic - as there's nothing wrong with that.
No point fooling himself at EBU or world level. Okay he didn't win all the rounds but he won the fight.
Gammer has some nice handspeed and combinations. He flurries very much like Michael Dokes. Needs to work on that stamina though.
Good fight as well. Nice that British heavies aren't just Danny v Skelton or Danny v Audley 1 or Danny v Sprott 3. They can still provide drama and skill.
I particularly enjoyed the last 2 rds - Gammer hammered Williams in the penultimate, then puts him away next round. Good stuff.

totally agrea maussa, it was an entertaining fight and I really enjoyed it from start to finish. Gammer looked good in parts and his hand speed and body assault was impressive. I was a little dissapointed he didnt carry on but I give him every credit for his efforts.
Danny looked in shape, was lethargic at times and soaked up some big shots to the body and head. I agree with what another poster said, he didn't show much defence on the back foot he just held his hands high and stood still.
Great fight though.

But is Danny going to take himself seriously, he trained himself for this fight, and although he did get himself into good shape, its not ideal.
If he's going to carry on he needs to get a good trainer, someone who can understand his mind a bit as well, not just a hard physical guy.
there's alot of good trainers out there that would be willing to train him.

Vilches is a pretty poor and old champion though. Sprott really did beat him badly.viciousmaussa wrote:Good to see Danny in shape. Good to see him at the level he belongs - domestic - as there's nothing wrong with that.

Vidoz was as poor too, surprised someone as good as Sprott lost to Vidoz.stujones wrote:Vilches is a pretty poor and old champion though. Seems Virchis ain't fighting Krasniqi though according to the Boxrec schedule.
Some forget how open the HW division Is for most belts depending who the title holder Is.

I certainly can see why you would make such a mistake but that wasn't Anthony Small.
It was the now retired ex Light-Middleweight contender Spencer Fearon.
Actually, you are wrong - it was Anthony Small in there supporting him - Spencer was his cornerman, along with Dean Powell and another gentleman. Apart from all the London boxing people, I believe I was Danny's only supporter. My timid voice was drowned out by Welsh folk baying for blood.
I was impressed with Danny. Danny has always put the work in, it's just that he listens to too many people, like the dubious character who told him to take creatine before the second Skelton fight. When he took the warm-up bout before that fight, he looked in reasonable shape, and I thought we'd have another cracker on our hands. Alas, it wasn't to be and Danny came in at a career-highest weight.
This time he sought the advice of probably the best in the business - Joe Dunbar. Joe gave him a programme suited to his body where he could get the weight down properly and retain strength etc. I'm just so sad that he didn't do this ages ago. Things may have been different.

I will say that I never did care too much for Danny Williams, and I still don't agree that he should have gotten a shot at Vitali Klitschko just for beating Mike Tyson (whose knee blew out after the 1st round) and while he does have good pop to his punches, nice height, good skills and good speed for a man his size---I never saw how he was any better/worse than anyone else fighting out of England at HW.
In my opinion Henry Cooper is still the best British HW champion and guys like Tommy Farr and Don Cockell and Joe Bugner not too far behind him. I would like to see Williams retire, but for me, to show that he is the best in the UK he'd have to fight Skelton again and maybe throw in a fight with McBride (Irish) and then retire because then there be relatively nobody left in that region of the world to say they can compete with him.
I know McBride a year or so ago was supposed to face Skelton for a title but it didn't happen, and to best of my knowledge he's still the Irish HW champion. Do I think he could beat Danny Williams? No. But it would bring some closure as to being the best in the UK and go out on top.

I'd agree that if he wants to re-prove himself the best in Britain, then rematches with Harrison, Skelton and Sprott would be in order. However, McBride - disagree with that for two reasons.IrishRufusMurphy wrote:I will say that I never did care too much for Danny Williams, and I still don't agree that he should have gotten a shot at Vitali Klitschko just for beating Mike Tyson (whose knee blew out after the 1st round) and while he does have good pop to his punches, nice height, good skills and good speed for a man his size---I never saw how he was any better/worse than anyone else fighting out of England at HW.

1) I was told not to put McBride in the British rankings cause he is not British - he is from the Republic of Ireland.
2) He's crap and rediculously out of shape currently. He beat the worst Tyson ever, a Tyson who was fought like he was worried that he would gas, and then did. You can say the same if you want for the Mike Tyson that fought Danny Williams - okay, take Tyson away from both fighters resume - Danny Williams has no defeats that are similar to the likes of Luis Monaco and Michael Murray.
Scott Gammer, hell even Micky Steeds would beat the McBride who just got his arse handed to him.

True, but Williams lost to Julius Francis pretty good in the past before as well. This man's lost to some pretty well off guys himself. While McBride might not be under the Commonwealth, he is still just a stone toss away from Britain and say what you want of him---he's still been considered the champion of the Emerald Isle for a long while.
While Williams got Klitschko, all McBride got was the runaround. Myself Tyson's been washed up for nearly a decade, but Williams was given the nod to a title shot while McBride couldn't get John Ruiz or Valuev when he tried like hell to.
Myself I see no difference in Williams fighting Gammer who before beaten a bum in Paul King, than Williams fighting McBride who beaten a washed up Tyson (same as Williams) made a win over Byron Polley and then lose to a good prospect in Mike Mollo.
Sounds to me there's no difference. Gammer beats a bum, McBride loses to a prospect.

Does McBride still know he is Irish champion, that old belt is probably in his attic gathering up dust considering he won a vacant belt (been inactive for 17 years) and hasn't defended it at all (10 years ago). Kenna vs McBride for the Irish title isn't a bad fight IMO.IrishRufusMurphy wrote:True, but Williams lost to Julius Francis pretty good in the past before as well. If McBride got himself into half way decent shape, then yes I would see no difference between Williams fighting Gammer and Williams fighting McBride (they are roughly around the same level, if McBride was in shape). However, I do hope that should Williams continue that the only British fighters he takes on are the three that have to be ranked above him still in the British rankings.... Sprott and Skelton especially are a level above McBride.
Julius Francis is a level above the likes of Michael Murray and I don't know if you saw the first Francis fight but it was quite close - Larry O Connell 114-118 card was a bit much IMO. Williams gave Francis the first 4-5 rounds, got into it in the middle rounds and for me - it was the last round which gave it to Francis. Besides Danny was young and avenged the defeat quite emphatically a year or so later.
I agree, it was a shame that McBride didn't get a better fight post Tyson. He put in a spirited effort there - shame though he didn't do that vs Mollo.

Well I was at the fight and i'm a little confused what you mean by respect..he had a few boos on the way to the ring but nothing in comparison to to some fights I've been to in London, that said I did sprint for the car park the minute the fight was stopped - From listening to a lot of the Welsh fans around me they where really looking forward to seeing Danny. I have to say I thought it was a really good little show
