I got to thinking about this....when is the first example of a fighter who was accepted as the champion "stripped" by some "power broker" of their title? It's a subject I have not studied and was only made aware of the concept as a young man when Ali was given the royal treatment.
Has anyone ever composed this list? and the reasonings behind the actions and under who's authorization the title was taken?
My guess is that it was extremely rare in the old days and now it happens on average somewhere in the world every 13 minutes.
We could add to this list those who dumped their titles as well.

nice one
well thats a good question to ask. I would guess that the guy who will have a list of this is barry deskins.mind you it could be quite a list if you go back to pre 1900 or so mate.be interesting to see what comes from this one
re
I don't have one of this list, but as I told Buzz I will try to put together a solid list this weekend, but I am also writing up recaps for the HBO and SHOWTIME fights and I have to finish my research on Jack Gagnon for Gagnon's grandson and also a couple of other projects that I have to complete, but it shouldn't be a problem as I would like to have that information for reference, but before I even start I am going to bet that Jose Suliaman has stripped more titles than anyone else in history. It should be a pretty huge list as there have been so many belts that have been stripped...especially since thr early 70s up to today!

hi barry...well I am sure that i speak for many people in saying that this will be a facinating bit of work to see.It is sure to generate much comment

Unlike I first figured, it's going to take more than just a few hours to do. Probably a few days, but I'm working on it. I have the Heavyweights and Flyweights complete and other various divisions started, but it's going to take some time.
barry I appreciate the effort and look forward to seeing the result of your review, ....Is my assumption that title stripping is "trending" up significantly, a correct assumption? Or was I simply oblivious to how common they were pre Clay/Ali? I suppose it could have been going on all along and I just never really was aware of the facts.
Gaining and dropping and stripping titles seems to literally be a brand new "ritual" to the game since the 90's. I'm growing used to it though it honestly remains one of the most annoying aspects of the sport to my way of thinking.

Stripping titles has been occuring for a pretty good while though today it is taken to ridiculous extremes. There was just a little different terminology back in the day...it was often stated as "So-and-so withdrew recognition from this, or that champion."
Re: re
The language is a big deal for my money. Withdrawing recognition is respectful and leaves the individual fan to fill in the blanks for himself. "Stripping" assumes so much authority and is purely arrogant leaving the fighter and the fan little respect in the process.barry wrote:Stripping titles has been occuring for a pretty good while though today it is taken to ridiculous extremes.
