Boxing's Tomato Cans

Post by HomicideHenry »

I thought maybe there should be a thread about the guys who never quite made it in the sport. The bleeders, the one hitters, palookas, the whole nine yards 8)

To make the thing more challenging you can write the name of a boxer and the next poster has to figure out a tomato can fighter whose name begins with the previous boxers last letter of their last name.

Example:

Bruce Strauss (first boxer) last letter in name 'S'

(pick fighter with a name that starts in 'S') Sammy Scaff (second boxer)

Get the picture? 8)

But you don't have to do that if you don't want to, as I said before, it's just more of a challenge and makes it a tad bit more interesting.

First guy on this list goes back to MW club fighter Mike Hallacy, who was such a perennial bleeder that he was often announced as 'Mike Hallacy, wearing the green trunks and red blood' :D

There used to be a place for fighter who could bleed and continue....Basilio comes to mind....he might not make top 10 status today...not because he couldnt beat the competition but because he could get cut and look bad while beating the best. Tomato Can is what he might be labeled today...and yet we know better.

I reluctantly have come to understand that it is best for today's feminized society to not allow such fighters much advertizing or risk facing even greater restraints on the sport. But if we could come up with some kind of artificial skin toughener for those with these tendencies I'd love to see it implemented. I hate it when a fight is ended on a cut.

Sorry to digress from your original premise here. ......

I here you BoxBuzz. In the old days they had wars, today or at least last decade or so they've stopped fights on a sneeze.

A lot of the early fighters used beef brine to toughen their skin. Dempsey used it, well actually a big percentage of fighters from that era used it. Pickled the skin.

Below is a list that I start a couple of years ago, which all of the fighters listed had at least 50 career losses, but most had more losses. And as I always state, the format here on the forum will probably look horrible, but I have it in even columns on microsoft word also if anyone wanted a copy.

TL= Total Losses
W= Wins
L=Losses
D=Draws
KO=Knockouts
TB=Total Bouts
LKO=Lost by Knockout
CLKO= Consecutive Losses by Knockout

That is quite an extensive list! There are some interesting names on it.

Johnny Risko beat several good fighters including Max Baer,Tommy Loughran,Mickey Walker,Paulino Uzcudun,Ernie Schaaf, George Godfrey, and Jack Sharkey.

Johnny "Bandit" Romero beat Archie Moore and Lloyd Marshall.

Lauro Salas beat Jimmy Carter for the lightweight title.

Fritzie Zivic won the welterweight tile from Henry Armstrong, and during his career beat Jake LaMotta, Lew Jenkins, Eddie Booker and Sammy Angott.

Yet, Risko,Romero,Salas, and Zivic all managed to lose at least 50 fights!
