More where are they nows??

Post by stujones »

The thread on Blake got me thinking about some of the fighters of the not so distant past, who dissapeared without trace. Perhaps some are still fighting or embarking on a comeback.

Any ideas of the following.

Bernard Paul, Gerogie Smith, ??? Richardson (Light Middle, good boxer hyped by Sky in mid 90's), Andy Holligan, Ross Hale, Patrick Mullings, Geoff McCreesh, Harry Senior.

Also, what ever happened to Floyd Harvard comeback, I know he got the scales horribly wrong and that why his first fight was scrapped, but has he given up on the idea all together.

Not sure about the others, but Paul was a postman wasn't he? Chances are he still is..

Speaking of ex-British fighters, anyone recall Sid Smith, the welterweight of the early 80's?
I believe it was his rematch with Chris Sanigar that was one of the best small hall fights seen in this country in years - and absolute war, with Chris avenging an earlier loss to Smith by knockout.

Sid went on for a few years before getting coldcocked by Honeyghan in an eliminator.

Wonder what he's up to know...bennie??!

Well, that was his nickname, I'm sure your correct.

Just alot (if not all) of those fighter disappeared from the scene without declaring an official retirement. All were domestic championship class and I think its odd that they retired.

I know Patrick Mullings had to serve some kind of suspesion for irregularities in his drug test after a fight, but he was the reigning British Champion at that point (just beat Alldis), and I thought made a vow he would return - has he sinced confirmed his retirement?

I believe Georgie Smith has had some personal problems and believe he's spent some time behind bars :x

Geoff McCreesh lost to Adrian Stone, but didn't say it was over for him - indeed it was a comeback after a long absense. Has he since said called time.

Harry Senior could still be a major factor in the devision, especially with the reammergence of Sprott (although wait what happens when he faces Williams again, we'll see how much Sprott has turned his areer around). A Sprott vs Senior rematch would be interesting and cross off one black mark on Sprott's record.

I assume everyone mentioned above has retired, can anyone verify this?

It's so difficult to know where fighters are after their careers are over. I mean, they all had lives outside boxing we didn't really know about anyway and they just carry on living those lives: bringing up their kids and working. They become like everyone else.
I remember a series of features in Boxing Monthly in 1989 (when it was good) by a Costa Rican writer by the name of James Dusgate. He travelled around the world tracing and meeting ex-world champions like Rodrigo Valdez, Ismael Laguna, Sugar Ramos...and others. His series was massively popular. I once thought about doing a similar series on British fighters, but it's so difficult tracing many of them. I mean how would you trace Sid Smith for example? The phone book list would be fun. I suppose you could go through his old management, but ex-fighters tend to speak the truth about former managers, so managers are reticent on giving out phone numbers. Of course, most fans just want to know what they're ex-heroes are doing now and how they look, so it's not as though you'd have to go into any great detail. For someone with plenty of time on their hands, and a good camera, there's a lot of money to be made out there.

Bernard Paul was a postman, from Tottenham. He used to pop up to my old local snooker club in Archway to watch the big fights from the US, Lennox fights e.t.c. He was a top bloke although always came across as the typical boxer living in denial, when defeats became more frequent he was always full of excuses when I asked him what had gone wrong. It ways always "I didn't train right, struggled to make the weight, bad ref" e.t.c, never that the other guy was better than him! I suppose that's just part of the typical boxers psyche, a couple of other fighters I've known have been like it. Don't know what happened to Paul now though as I moved from the area.

Funny enough Harry Senior used to fight at the club I trained at, St Pancras and Brian John trained him who trained my 'group'. All this doesn't help me tell you what he is doing now though, I always got the impression he was quite talented but never got the right fights at decent notice.

Don't know about any of the others, never liked Mcreesh because of his supporters, I had greif with a few when he fought Stone, right bunch of lowlifes.

Peter Richardson (last man to beat Forrest before Mayorga) had truble with cuts and then dislocated his shoulder and struggled to get back... Earns his money as a painter these days.

Georgie Smith is serving 7 years your GBH after beating up a 70 year old who someone had told him was a "nonce"
