Danny Williams: excuse or truth?
Danny Williams: excuse or truth?
Danny Williams has now revealed on Secondsout that prior to the Samil Sam fight he had Shingles, now this illness takes months to get out of the system and it might be the reason why he faught so below par against Sam and Mivrovic.
I have personal experience of how much flu can take out of your performance, you legs just go and you get hurt from punches of worse quality and hardness that you've taken in sparring. With Shingles I cannot imagine how bad he could have felt in the ring.
My only problem is why mention the shingles now? Did he geniunely have the illness or is this a ploy to frighten Sprott. If he did have (some of you scribes might know) how long before the Sam fight. It could answer alot of questions.
I do have my doubts, where was the prefight doctor - I guy with Shingles is not medical fit to fight. Also, why not mention it after he got KO'd - he was asked several times what happened his response was "I don't know, all I know that it wasn't me - I can't explain my performance". A fighter with Shingles could quite easily explain why he faught so off-par.
Also if he did have Shingles then why did he get rid of McDonnell. They were starting to really produce some good stuff - perhaps McDonnell convinced Danny to fight despite the illness. But with such an Illness he cannot blame himself or his coach for his performance, only his illness. Like I said, maybe he trusted McDonnell judgements that he was well enough to fight (he should have known his own body though).
Anybody know anything about this story?

Don't believe it for a moment, Stu. Danny was happy and confident in Berlin in the week leading up to the fight. I was also hanging around with his brothers prior to the fight and they were just as confident, or should I say overconfident. Not once did they mention shingles, not even when we went for a drink on the afternoon of the fight. They didn't know me from Adam and had no reason to be on their guard (which they weren't).
They simply all felt Danny was going to blow away the fat Turk.
As for his performance against Mirovic, it epitomises Danny's career to date: flashes of brilliance after long periods of sleepwalking. It's nothing new.

Crap i'm afraid, my old man had shingles and it took him months to recover, it's a terrible illness and needs time to recuperate from. Afraid Danny needs to realise his performance on the night was not good enough and he was beaten by a deceptively better guy, i think Sam will beat Gomez too for the record
I don't believe it either. In most fights (against foreign opposition mainly) Williams just appears mentally weak, which in turn seems to weaken his legs and restrict his movement.
The only fight that comes to mind where Danny has been bristling with confidence is the Francis rematch. Oh and perhaps Kali Meehan but then that did only last 30 seconds.
We've waited years to see Williams finally enter "the zone" but it looks highly unlikely to happen now.

I've had shingles and it hurts like fornicating hell. Certainly it would've fucked up his training. But you can get a course of pills that will get rid of it in a couple of weeks (as I did), in some cases the pain never goes away though, depending on how much damage the infection did to the nerve-endings.

What's your thoughts guys?

I believe him.
Re: Danny Williams: excuse or truth?
Why come out with that excuse now? I've heard he always looked amazing in the gym and how he also suffers from terrible nerves pre fight. its probably difficult for him to comprehend some below par performances especially if he's been on song in training camp and sparring. Making excuses for unfulfilled potential IMO.

A great retro post from Stu but I will give my opinion anyway: Looking back - Sam would have beaten him anyway, he was all wrong for Williams, as I said at the time when i predicted Sam, he will stand on his toes and push him back and when he does, he will stop him.
Mind you, I predicted Kali Meehan would beat Danny Williams in Bolton and Kali got sparked out within 40 seconds - the life of a tipster.

Didn't Danny always have shingles? I'm sure I've heard this excuse many times from him. If in doubt, shingles.

Re: Danny Williams: excuse or truth?
the famous Danny wobbles started to happen against keith Long . I think?
a was certainly all over the place against samil Sam and continued to have seemingly brittle punch resistance throughout his career after this period.
in his Prizefighter appearance was wobbled by Carl Baker with pretty much the first punch thrown !
this happens to fighters, its just one of those things.
as for the mirovitz performance...I didn't notice anything particularly amiss there. Big Bob took matt skelton to the edge of hell around this time too.

Actually shingles is a recurring illness, I don't think you ever get rid of it once you contract it.Riddick Blowe wrote:Didn't Danny always have shingles? I'm sure I've heard this excuse many times from him. If in doubt, shingles.
