Stevenson has a substance abuse -alcohol- problem. Years ago he firebombed the house of a police captain in Cuba, in a dispute over a romantic liason. He was not shot by firing squad because he's one of Fidel's favorites. In the US he is persona-non-grata, as he violated bond on an arrest for punching out a skycap during a tour a couple of years ago.

Nice work, Pedro - thanks for the links. On a related note, I saw this interesting letter in the most-recent mailbag of RingTalk's Pedro Fernandez:Venceremos wrote:Hello,

Pedro (Cabrera)'s record only lists one KO loss to Vysotsky - the other loss is listed simply as an L3. Can anyone here confirm whether Stevenson was in fact KOed twice by Vysotksy?Pedro,
You mentioned the great Cuban AMATEUR champion, Teofilo Stevenson, in your "Monday Edition." A little-known fact about Teofilo--which would come as a great shock to the folks who regard him as a great fighter--is that he was KO?d TWICE by a stubby, little-known Russian heavyweight named Igor Vysotsky. (As Casey Stengel said, "You could look it up!") So why didn't Vysotsky, a Jerry Quarry look-alike, make more of a splash in international competition? Well, it was because he CAUGHT too many shots, and his face and his eyes were usually all puffed up after just one or two bouts in a tournament such as the Olympic Games. And, of course, he never turned pro. But as a one-shot puncher, he was probably the equal of Earnie Shavers...

GREAT site. I look forward to the addition of Angel Herrera, Hector Vinent, Roberto Balado, Jorge Luis Gonzalez, Ariel Hernandez, Juan Hernandez, etc. etc.
Don't forget that he lost to American Craig Payne.Dutch Windmill wrote:His amateur record was 301-20 ... Defeated pros Duane Bobick, John Tate, Tony Tubbs, Michael Dokes and Tyrell Biggs

True but Payne was a talented fighter if not the most dedicated and Stevenson was on the slide by then. But still a great result for Payne.zuru wrote:Don't forget that he lost to American Craig Payne.Dutch Windmill wrote:His amateur record was 301-20 ... I know what you are saying. Stevenson was a great fighter under his own code but there is the argument that when he fought a lot of the other top amateur eg Biggs, Page & Dokes etc it was a case of man against boy.BoxBuzz wrote:Not sure that gives you the real bragging rights to have those names on your hit list before turning pro. I'm not taking anything from Stevenson as he would have probably been a top ten name but I don't think he would have been top dog.

Stevenson vs Stinson 1974
Stevenson fought against Stinson having an injury in a leg, maybe for that reason that the fight reached the limit.
