Just looked at his record on boxrec,he never fought in south africa or was born there ,where is the link?
Im trying to get info.for my title bout game they had the birth slightly different as well but I think your right as to who this is steve

It seems that Smith was not that big a puncher - the (incomplete) record I have for him only shows 7 wins by stoppage in 50 contests.
Yes, some sources quote his birthdate as 5th January 1884.

Wasn't he the same man Tommy Burns fought? I think after Burns disposed of Irish champion Jem Roche (KO1st) and English champion Gunner Moir he fought Jewey Smith in France?

I know from what I've read it really sent big waves, bad ones, through most of white fans, especially Americans and former ex champions when Burns said that he didn't want to be known as a 'white' champion, 'American' or 'Canadian' champion, but a true 'World' champion and would defend his title against any man of any size of any color or nationality.

Burns after defeating Smith went off to Australia and fought Bill Lang? I could be wrong, but I know that he tried to get a fight with Sam McVey, but eventually fought Jack Johnson.
