Barrera Vs Marquez - Classic

Post by Boxing Addict »

Looking forward to a potential barnburner.

In me view Barrera has the edge;

Better jab, better overall boxing skills, better punch especially at Super Featherweight. Marquez has the better chin though - not a lot in it.

I see barrera starting fast and winning the early rounds with Marquez coming back into it in the middle rounds with some crafty counters. In the end Barrera will come back the last few rounds and win a UD by a couple of rounds.

Only seen Marquez once, against Pacqiao, and I thought he was very, very good.

I know ghe got dropped a few times early on, but I thought he beat Pacquiao in that fight.

Barrera is class but I would not be suprised if Marquez beats him!

Don't know about better boxing skills.

Barrera got knocked down in the 1st was it against Pacman, and couldn't take control of the fight, he tried to brawl with a brawler, and couldn't get on top.

Marquez boxed masterfully of the back foot against Pacman, despite being decked THREE TIMES.

If it comes to pure boxing, then Marquez has the edge, as well as an edge in handspeed and movement.

Barrera has the edge in inside fighting where he is the guv'nor, and also in punch power, though Marquez when he sets himself is no slouch, and seems to be putting a bit more spite in his shots of late.

This is a very interesting fight, but I give Marquez the edge, because I think he is nearer his prime than Barrera, who looks to have lost a step, and who has had to box quite negatively to win of late. Barrera has more miles on the clock for me.

In their primes, I think Marquez still had the style to present some awkward questions for Barrera.

fascinating fight.

i just wonder if it will be overly tactical though.

cos both can be cautious at times.

marquez is very under rated.

barrera in a close one i reckon.

It was interesting that Marquez had a few early problems dealing with Jaca but soon solved them out. However he may have been looking to trade more to please the crowd.

I'm backing Marquez to beat Barrera here on a close decision.

Since losing to Pacman, Marquez has been getting involved in a few more wars than he used to, but I, like you, think that is down to him wanting to put on a show for his new promoters, rather than being shopworn.

I think this fight will show us exactly what Barrera has left. I think he's gone over the top, and has adpoted a more energy saving approach simply because he can't turn in performances like he did against Morales anymore.

I think Marquez can work at a decent enough pace to edge the fight. I don't think there's all that much between them as boxers, both accurate, both pick their punches well, both move well, solid chins, decent power, I just believe that Marquez is the fresher of the two, and that will make all the difference.

I agree it's all down to freshness and Marquez has less miles on the clock. There are few better top level technicians around than Marquez IMO i expect him to do the business on March 17th.

I fancy Marquez in this one, and will back accordingly :)

I just feel that Barrera is further down the slippery slope than Marquez is - Good match up though, and will be an enjoyable tactical fight.

On saying that I wouldn't be surprised at all if these two great fighters let it all hang out for one big tear up.

Well if this means anything, Barrera has promised to fight toe-to-toe with Marquez from round 1 so we may not see MAB the technician from the Juarez rematch. This may be Barrera's downfall as I think he's capable of outfoxing Marquez with superior movement and jab, rather than taking the fight to a fresher counter puncher.

I'd give the slight edge to Barrera for boxing skills. Marquez is amazing on the back foot (recently he's been more aggressive) but Barrera has been in with so many different styles during his career, he's picked up every trick in the book and can adapt.

Maybe this will be Barrera's last hurrah?
I'm rooting for MAB, in a close one on points.

I personally disagree with the viewpoint that Marquez is technically better. He is fresher and might have more in the tank (which is why I think he will win) but I don't know if he is technically as good or with all these advantages people have said.... watch a peak Barrera - thats blistering handspeed.

I don't think the Pacquiao fights are particularly useful comparisons..... It was a poor Barrera vs Manny, and a poor Manny vs Marquez. Manny just started to believe his hype and stopped his strategy which out gunned Barrera and also worked (at the second time) vs Morales. People were comparing Pacquaio to Mayorga after the Marquez fight as an over rated one dimensional fighter - wrong.

Not sure Barrera can fight for 12 rounds now, which could be his downfall.

Barrera looked horrible before the opening bell vs Pac. He had no speed or sharpness and in all truth didn't look fit to fight. He promtly got a thrashing but a new star was born.

Whether or not he can beat Pac at this stage, all we need to do is look how Barrera turned his career around - wins over Morales 3, Peden, Juarez x2. He also holds the Proper 130 title (Morales had beaten titlists Jesus Chavez & C Hernandez).

And also the way he's adapted/refined his style. I'm with Stu here - Barrera is slightly the better technician in a battle of master boxers. MAB is more experienced, has better timing and throws the more compact shots.

By contrast, Marquez does loop his right hand & telegraphs his punches.

For me, this fight won't be defined by who has more in the tank, but who can get a rhythm going and who can adapt to his opponent, who can feint his man out of position & punish his man for errors...

I'll give Marquez credit though. In his own way he is brilliant. I had him WELL BEATING the excellent Chris John, he outclassed Salido, Polo, and hammered those hungry southpaw sluggers Jandaeng and Jaca. That is effing good practise, not to mention he got up 3x to school Pac.

I also think JMM was unlucky against Freddie Norwood.

Mentally, Marquez may have the edge - this is like Mike McCallum getting a shot at Sugar Ray Leonard! This is the fight that avoided fighters don't ever get. On the other hand, Barrera has a poss HUGE rematch with Pac on the horizon and will want to secue that.
