Steve holdsworth Fact of the day

Post by REAL_DEAL »

Friendly Ref

In a 1993 light- welterweight fight between Juan Coggi and eder Gonazalex, Defending champion Coggi had the benfit of some help from the officials, On two occasions a round was finished early to save Coggi from defeat, And then referee Isidoro Rodriquez stepped in to ensure that Gonzalez could not finish Coggi off when the champion was reeling, Coggi kept his title, but both referee and time keeper were banned for life.

I've got that fight on tape. A beaten Coggi was led back to his corner by the referee and the Colombian, who had clearly forced a genuine stoppage, thought he had won. The referee then allowed Coggi to recuperate in his corner and after about five minutes, and I mean five minutes, cleared the ring and ordered the pair to continue. It was truly 'bent'. A dispirited Gonzalez knew he couldn't win and was stopped around the seventh or eighth. I often wondered what was done about the referee that night. I'm glad the scumbag was banned for life.
