Joe Henderson - Broken Hill.

Post by Spike »

I am looking for clues as to where I might find any information on Joe Henderson's fights.

Joe was a miner at Broken Hill and fought at 9st 4lb (Lightweight) around 1911 -1925. For a number of years he also ran a Gym in William Street, Broken Hill just behind the Mulga Hotel.

Whenever he got a young lad who wouldn't listen to his advice, he would get his young sister 17 years his junior (my mother) to get in the ring with them and sit them on their rump. Mum was never taller than 4' 11 1/2" (151cms). but she could throw a straight left with the best of them.

This is the first site where I have ever found any record of Joe whatsoever.

You might also try posting on http://www.warriorboxing.com. I'm guessing Henderson was from the UK?

G'day Boxmel,

No, Joe was born and bred in New South Wales, Australia. I have contacted Arthur Tunstall of the NSW Amateur Boxing Association, but apparently they have no records going back that far, that is why I was so surprised to find Joe mentioned on this site.

Thanks for the hint though, I will give it a try.

If this site has records there is no reason why a site in the UK might not also have a few more fights recorded.

Thanks for your help,
Spike.

G'Day Spike: :D

If Arthur doesn't know, probably no one will - he's been around forever. And I do apologize for thinking you were in the UK.

Good luck in your search.

Did you mean to put this in the amateur forum? You didn't say anything about looking for amateur records, so I assume you are interested in the pro fighter with two fights. You might have better luck if you try the boxers of the past forum.

G'Day Emile,

To be honest, I wasn't too sure where I should put my request. I only knew of Joe as having been an amateur, and prior to finding the mention on this site, never new anything of his pro fights.

I went up to the hill many years ago but couldn't find much in the way of information in the few days that I was there. So the only things I remember, are things my mother told me as a kid and that wasn't a lot. The main thing being that he was heavily involved in the amateur scene in Broken hill running his own gym for many years.

I'll put a post in the boxers of the past also.

Like most people doing a bit of family research, I never started asking questions about my relations until all of the people who could help me were dead. Now I'm trying to catch up. :(

Thanks,
Spike.
