Question about a 1938 fight? :)

Post by hiiambryce »

Hello! Hows it going? Im hoping to get some insight about these boxers. I recently had got a neat old scrapbook from a local estate out in Sun City, AZ, and it has alot of great photos from 1937-1938. Four of these photos are on one page, and the scrapbook page reads Adamick-Mann Mar.-1938. Can anyone tell me who these fighters possibly are? Im thinking about throwing them up on ebay however, I don't know if they are anyone, and don't know boxing. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks! Talk to you all later, and have a great day! :)

They are Jimmy Adamick and Nathan Mann. Mann fought Joe Louis for the world heavyweight title and Adamick was on his way toward a title shot until he ran into Roscoe Toles who nearly killed Adamick in a bout, but they were both very solid heavyweights of the 30s and Mann fought into the 1940s. Adamick was one of the heavier hitting heavyweights of the day, but Mann was the better all-around fighter. Adamick retired with a career record of 51-5-2 (45 KO), the record for him in the database here is incomplete and Mann finished with a career record of 74-12-4 (45 KO). Mann and Adamick never fought each other that I am aware of. They should sell pretty good on ebay!

Thanks so much Barry for your insight! I am so glad that someone knows alot about the boxing world, especially from back then! Yeah, its a pretty cool thing when you can come across some neat old photos, especially when they are explained about who and what and what years these are! It definitely helps out! :)

I have been putting material together for years with intentions of writing a very thorough encyclopedia on the heavyweight division sometime in the next couple of years. Overall I will be covering between 1,000 and 3,000 heavyweights with, among other things, mini-biographical sketches for each heavyweight. Below is the mini-bio sketch that I wrote for Adamick, but I haven't gotten to Mann yet.

Jimmy Adamick
1933-1938

(Born: January 23, 1915 in Midland, Michigan)
(Died: April 5, 1992)
Jimmy Adamick, nicknamed “The Midland Mauler,” was a successful amateur who won an amateur championship in 1933 in Detroit, Michigan, which he followed that by turning professional in the same year of 1933 though he had only one fight after which he went to work on his father’s farm until 1935 when he resumed his professional boxing career. Adamick was a very heavy-handed fighter who stood 5’ 11” tall and his weight went from around 180 to around 200 pounds and was managed by Jack Kearns. Between the years 1936 and 1937 Adamick scored 32 consecutive knockouts and he would turn out to be one of only two fighters to ever knockout all-time great, “Slapsie” Maxie Rosenbloom. Other fighters that Adamick beat were Harry Thomas, Natie Brown, Al Ettore, Jack Trammell, Lou Thomas, Red Bruce and Roscoe Toles and at one point in 1937 he was ranked the number six heavyweight in the world by The Ring magazine. On September 28, 1938 in Detroit Jimmy Adamick stepped into the ring for the last time as he faced tough colored contender Roscoe Toles. Toles stopped Jimmy in the second round and afterward Adamick fell into a coma and suffered serious head injuries as a result of the bout, but luckily he recovered, though his career as a boxer was over. In 1939 Adamick contemplated a comeback, but his friends and family talked him out of it. Up to the Toles fight Jimmy had been a very game and very tough heavyweight who could take it nearly as well as he could dish it out, but his leaky defense would soon catch up to him by the more skilled fighters. If only Adamick would have had a solid defense there is no telling how far he might have gone as he was a very tough man who had a punch that was truly major league!

Fought Two World Champions and Two Hall of Famers
Amateur Record: ?
Professional Record: 51-5-2 (45 KO) Total Bouts: 58 KO%: 77.6%
World Title Record: 0-0-0

To say that Adamick was "on his way toward a title shot until he ran into Roscoe Toles" is a bit of a reach, since he had also just lost to a far past his prime John Henry Lewis, and was only spared a KO from Trammell because of a pre fight "business arragement" a year previous.
Also, I have to seriously question the "32 straight KOS" between 36 and 37 you speak of , since he lost a decision in the early fall of 37 in his first fight with Rosenbloom.

Well that's because you don't have a clue as to what you are talking about cosand...plain and simple!!!! I have his complete record which was compiled by long time, well respected boxing historian Laurence Fielding and which I have went through and read reports of most of those bouts myself, not that I would ever question Fielding, kind of like you should never question me...and guess what...if you ever took the time to read any articles from the era and actual do a little research instead of presuming that you know then you would see that Adamick was very much on his way for a title shot in fact they were talking of him fighting Joe Louis within a year before he was nearly killed by Toles! Now in the future perhaps you do a little research bgefore yapping out about that which you do not know...oh especially when you try to speak out against someone who really does know...and for the record...below is his 32 straight knockout streak...enjoy!!!!

It could very possibly be that he had 33 consecutive knockouts if we could determine the date for the Roth bout...you might want to try to pull that trick with someone that cannot back what they say...me...I have facts to back anything I say...you should know this by now!!! And again...as I have told you oh so many times before...the records in the database here are often incomplete so do not assume that they are complete, or you will just end up making inaccurate assumption...like this one here...I try to tell you guys, but you just don't listen!!!

And speaking of title opponents of Louis who just happened to lose a fight to some overithe-hill, or some never was right before they were given a title fight with Louis...well there are several opponents like that, so why would losing to Lewis make a difference...oh...it wouldn't, which you would have got if you had done any research, but look it up now!

Oh my God...could this be right? Harry Thomas two months before he fought Louis for the title had lost to who...Jimmy Adamick...yet Thomas was given the title fight, but Adamick is reaching...get a clue!!! Or whats this...Al McCoy...my God...he had lost five of eight and two consecutive to Solly Kriegar and Billy Conn and then he was given a title shot, but according to your theory cosands that would be impossible...right, or does that just work for Adamick...and to say that Adamick was on his way was reaching...try looking it up? Do I even need to continue?

Hiam---I may sound pretty prickish right here, but this is one of the cats that has been trying to make me look wrong for years, which as you can see here, is always without any success!!! I don't know what it is, but it looks like they would eventually get a clue and start trying to pull this on someone who actually doesn't know the history of the sport...like each other...that would be so easy for them...and the thing is...they would rarely ever be rebuffed like they get every time that try to take me on!!!

Barry..Dude..you have some serious issues don’t ya ?

I think living in hard core Appalachia and having to fetch water from the creek back to the trailer all these years has given you a bit of a complex. Hey you have a computer and electricity. In your circles, that makes you a candidate for mayor

(banjo music plucks in the background)

First off, I thank you for posting the record. That is what one is supposed to do when one questions a claim.
Now if you would attach a date and publication name to it, that would be great. You know, one that can be checked and verified, rather then namedropping sportswriters
That is what a beginner researcher would do, Someone who fancies himself a “historian” shouldn’t need to be prompted. By the way, didn’t I lecture you once on the dubious nature of old news clips as accurate info ?
Tsk tsk…you never studied did you ?

Second, please show any source that claims he was “on his way7” to a title shot.
Sorry Barry, “other guys got one so why not him” doesn’t cut it in “That there ejamacted world where them there smart folks live”.

On second thought Barry..never mind. The wait and the tedious read will no doubt outweigh the value of your response. Do what you usually do when your back is to the wall…lock the thread

....Now that that hype has been debunked...(both the claim and the author)

For the record, the FACT is that Adamick had lost allof his credibility and promotional appeal after the Trammell fight. It was clearly a fix gone bad, with Adamick losing even after the fix was in. Add the loss to a badly past his prime Lewis, and NO one was going to invest a thin dime in a title shot for Adamick. To think otherwise is revisionist history, and a bit silly.

>>>For the record, the FACT is that Adamick had lost allof his credibility and promotional appeal after the Trammell fight.<<<

Really? Instead of being a retard every day of your life how about you provide some documentation to back the claim...can you do that...I didn't think so!!!

>>>Add the loss to a badly past his prime Lewis<<<

Do you even try to think before you write? The only thing that was wrong with Lewis was his eye-sight...other than that he was still in great shape physically...not to mention that he had not lost one fight since 1936...a span of 44-0...not to mention that Lewis had, only tw3o fights prior to beating Adamick Lewis had beaten Elmer Ray...you do know who Elmer Ray is don't you? Sorry, but nothing you can try to make up is going to make you right...sorry...that's what happens when you come up against a superior and way more educated mind!!!

See what's wrong with idiots like you is that even after proof has been shoved down your scrawny throat you are still too stupid to know any better. Maybe it's all the crack houses that you have been in, which speaking of...isn't it about time for your ole' woman to get off from workin the houses?

Actually Adamick's record is in one of the early IBRO Journals, I don't know right off hand, but I have every issue that has been published so it wouldn't be hard to find, which any other member can verify. Too bad you are still too stupid to realize it!!!

As much as I have made you look like a complete fool over the years on this forum it looks like would have sense enough to try to question someone else...someone that doesn't know much about the sport...me...I've forgotten more about boxing than you will ever know :TU:

By the way...how does it feel to constantly be owned by a backwoods hillbilly like myself? Sure tells a lot about you doesn't it?

So ummmm Barry...where is that dated publication with Adamick's record ?
Oh, and how about that source stating that Adamick was in line for a title shot ?
As predicted, your response offered no proof of your all too common silly ass claims.
Big surprise huh ?
"The only thing that was wrong with Lewis was his eye-sight"

Bwhahahahahahaha !!! That was the "only thing" wrong huh Barry ? Just a "minor" problem ?
Good GOD you are stupid !
"Actually Adamick's record is in one of the early IBRO Journals, I don't know right off hand"
HUH ? You JUST posted his record the other day !!!!
HAHAHAHAHAHA !!!!!!!!!!!
IF it were legit, how hard would it be to simp[ly post the source and date so it could be looked up ?????

I guess when you have cousins as parents, and were raised amoung a culture of ignorance and stupidity, you must come to think all people are really as stupid as you huh ?
Ya'll needs to knows that them there folks that live outside the wuds bes a hole lots smorter then them there mountain folk !

I gotta tell ya, the owners of this site took care of their charity budget for 10 years when the made you an editor.
You know, a little like integrating the learning disabled into the community, or when whan VISTA brings boxes of oatmeal and powered milk to white trash trailer parks and dirt floor shacks ? Ahhhhh...childhood memories huh Barry ?
LOL

Anyway...I'm bored with this. verbally bitch slapping dumb hicks is a guilty pleasure, but it gets old fast.
I, just like many others in the past and on a regular basis, has exposed you as a green tooth mouth breathing hillbilly playing wannabe historian on the internet. I wont be the first, and for sure not that last.

Now hurry Barry, you got squirrels to clean it’s almost lunch time !

You think I am being to hard on old Barry ?
Trust me, it's for his own good.
The guy suffers from a textbook case of clinical paranoia and delusional psychosis, and seriously needs some help (and i'm NOT joking)
Trouble is, where he lives, the nearest clinic is about 200 miles away.
A sad commentary on the state of healthcare in America i say !
