boxing was in a mess right before joe louis came along. the schmelling/sharkey fights didn't go over well..there were all those questions about the whole career of primo carnera..the public liked max baer but he didn't take his title seriously anbd lost (in a fight about which i've always had my doubts) to an undistinguished jim braddock...and there was an overall bad odor about the game in general...heavyweights on down.

then joe louis came along..belted over everyone on his way to the title(except schemling, of course) and defended it against all comers for eleven years. never a hint of a fix or scandal....a clean fighter...great to watch..and, in the words of billy conn..."A real high quality man...i never met a finer one."
