Actually, they have never met in the ring before. Byrum's wins came during the years that Ray stepped away from the sport after he was diagnosed with cancer. I think he was away for about 4 years. From what I have heard, Byrum is a solid competitor but Ray is still favored to win the tourney.Dennis wrote:With Byrum winning the state tourney 3 times, it sounds like he might have boxed Stallings before. Have they boxed? If so, were they good competitive bouts?

Sorry Dennis. I haven't forgotten. I usually go to the indystar.com website and pull the results, but for some reason this year the GG aren't getting any press. I'm still trying to compile a list of the novice and open winners. Here is what I have so far:
At heavyweight, Byron Sutton defeated Derek Smithson to advance to the finals against Ray Stallings.
At superheavy, Josh O'Brien will fight Richard Byram, Jr. In the finals.
I think you have a son at heavyweight Dennis, So I hope that helps a little.

Yes, Dennis I did say that. I was mistaken. Here's the story: Byram always fought at heavyweight then in 2005 he fought at 178. Now he has a brother fighting at 178, so he moved to superheavy. He is a very small guy and I think super may be a big step for him, but we'll see. The other two at heavy were Derek Smithson and Byron Sutter with Sutter winning over Smithson, but injuring his right knee in the fight. I'll keep you posted as soon as I hear anything else. You know, it's a shame that us fighters don't get the coverage in the press. Instead they want to print stories about the swim team! LOL
Open divisions results from April 5, 2007:
125 — David Velasquez (L.T. Warriors) defeated Lee Roy Tu’Qul (Badd Boyz Club) by walkover.
165 — Raymond Lucies (Frankfort) dec. Kevin Hoover (Indy South) 3-2; David Bond (Muncie) dec. Tony Malone (Sarge Johnson) 5-0.
In other Indiana Golden Gloves news from Thursday, Raymond Lucies of Frankfort put himself one victory away from a second consecutive Open Division 165-pound championship after he scored a 3-2 victory over Kevin Hoover of Indians South. Lucies will move into the title bout April 19.
David Bonds of Muncie will be Lucies’ opponent in the championship match, thanks to his 5-0 victory over Tony Malone of Sarge Johnson.
Lee Roy Tu’Qul of the Badd Boyz Club lost a shot at defending his Open Division 125-pound crown without ever throwing a punch. Tu’Qul weighed in too heavy before the fight, so the victory went to David Velasquez of L.T. Warriors.

Here are the open division winners from Thursday night's championships:
119- Dwayne Wisdom
125-Justin Christian
132-Seth Caffee
141-David Buggs
152-Richard Gorham
165-Raymond Lucies
178-Zac Willett
201-Ray Stallings Jr.
201+-Josh O'Brien
Dennis, I know you'll see this so here's the recap of the good bouts of the evening:
Seth Caffee basically put the Ali shuffle on his opponent, dancing his way to an easy win. David Buggs won a controversial decision over Chris Mendoza, with most in attendance thinking Mendoza won clearly. Ray Lucies, although a friend, got a gift decision over David Bond of Muncie, with both fighters getting points deducted twice for holding. Zac Willett won a hard fought decision that could have gone either way. Stallings just flat out dominated Byron Sutton from the opening bell. Sutton is a gritty fighter, but was way outclassed in this rematch. the superheavy final was, how do I say this, horrible! Josh O'Brien is a good fighter, but I think on a national level his suspect chin may give him problems.Richard Byram, who has won THREE open crowns, didn't hold up to the hype. I'll leave at that. Overall, very exciting night with a sellout crowd. I think Jordan and Stallings would be an interesting matchup.

Yes, I did see the results and info about the bouts - thanks. Yes, Jordan and Ray would be an interesting bout. I talked to Ray last year in Omaha and he is a nice guy. If they don't get matched in Chattanooga, maybe the bout could be arranged for a club show. I'll let you know if it gets scheduled.thevanillagorilla wrote:Dennis, I know you'll see this so here's the recap of the good bouts of the evening ... thevanillagorilla - What about the 125 open bout? My younger son defeated Justin Christian in a Regional Silver Gloves bout 3 years ago. I didn't realize that Justin was that much older than my son who is 15 until I saw that Justin was boxing in the open class. I am interested to know how Justin performed. I will have to congratulate him on his GG title and try to watch his bouts in Chattanooga.

Hi Dennis. Justin performed well enough to win. That's about it. He didn't look spectacular, but he looked solid. And from what I've heard your boy is a tough fighter himself. BTW- if Ray and Jordan get scheduled, you won't need to inform me. Ray and I have been training together for a few months now and we speak to one another on a daily basis. Ray, Zac Willett, and myself are going to the regional in Salt Lake City in May. I know you keep up with the scene, so have you heard who may be fighting in this particular tournament at Superheavy or Heavy?
My younger son has a lot of talent, but he is just growing too fast right now. He was 5'8" last year and is now over 6' tall. He has gone from boxing at 95# 2 years ago to 110# last year to 138# now.thevanillagorilla wrote:Hi Dennis. Justin performed well enough to win. That's about it. I have not yet heard who will be attending the Western Trials. I think it all depends on the Nat'l GG and Eastern Trials. Some boxers may enter the Western Trials and not the Eastern Trials for geographic reasons and then school or work could be other reasons. If coaches/officials/boxers would post the results from all of the regional championships, I would have a better idea of who might attend. At the Midwestern Trials 18 boxers sent in entry forms for the 201# class, but only 11 actually entered the tournament. The same thing will happen at the Eastern and Western Trials.
