Ricky may have alreayd been offered Cotto, Mayweather.

Post by Rocky Balboa »

LAS VEGAS: Ricky Hatton is bluntly honest. That much comes through whether he's assessing his last three performances, past opponents, future opponents or anyone who happens to wander across his field of vision.

As he sat down with a group of reporters at a casino restaurant hours before he was to walk his friend Marco Antonio Barrera into the ring before his match against Juan Manuel Marquez, Hatton let loose with some of those assessments.

The waiter walked into the small room full of reporters to take food and drink orders and Hatton said: "I don't think you're going to get too many orders for salads from this group."

Hatton was in town to support Barrera and to promote his return to Las Vegas in June against Jose Luis Castillo. Here's hoping he has a better run in the ring on his return than he did against Juan Urango back in January.

"My last three performances have been ****," Hatton said. "Certainly not the Ricky Hatton you've come to expect."

Carlos Maussa, Luis Collazo and Urango weren't exactly Floyd Mayweather, Oscar De La Hoya and Castillo. Hatton won, but he didn't look good doing it.

Hatton said Urango didn't throw enough punches to make a good fight.

"The more punches your opponent throws the more gaps and openings he leaves for you to take advantage of,"Hatton said.

Also, Hatton said he was battling a bad head cold, which came from staying confined to his hotel.

For the Castillo fight, Hatton said he and his camp will come to Las Vegas probably a month ahead of time so that he can get acclimated better. He said they plan to rent a house where they can control the temperature setting.

Whatever the case, Hatton will have to raise the level of his performance against Castillo or American boxing fans will start to look at him as a "one-hit wonder".That one hit being a sterling performance against Kostya Tszyu.

"The Castillo fight is more my kind of fight,"Hatton said.

"He's not slippery southpaw or a guy who doesn't throw punches."

Castillo will come right after Hatton and he will throw punches. In short he will try to knock Hatton out, which plays right into Hatton's blood and guts style. Hatton needs to show more of that to the American boxing fans, who are still waiting for him to reproduce the Kostya Tszyu night on U.S. soil.

That was one of the reasons that Hatton fought so hard to come to America. He wanted to fight the best and he wanted to prove that he could produce the same chills and thrills that played to sellout crowds in Manchester. He said that desire to bring his act across the Atlantic Ocean played heavily into his decision to part ways with promoter allegedly.

"Frank did wonderful for me when I was coming up," Hatton said. "He got me the right opponents and moved me along. But when you get to a certain position and you want to see how good you are you have to have the opponents around you. I should have moved up after the Ben Tackie fight."

Hatton said he told Warren that he wanted to fight better opponents and he wanted to do it in America. That battle wound up in court and Hatton moved on to a new promoter.

"I'm living my dream," Hatton said. "I've always wanted to fight champions and unify titles. I was nowhere near that with my former promoter."

While Hatton has gotten his wish to come to America, he has not been matched up against those A-level opponents. He fought Maussa, a gangly and awkward opponent, to unify the 140 pound titles. Then he decided to move up and he fought Collazo, a crafty welterweight who held the WBA welterweight title at the time. But Collazo popped Hatton and nearly KO'ed him in the 12th round of their match and Hatton figured out that he had moved to 147 too quickly. And he fought Urango to regain one of the 140-pound belts he had given up to move up to welterweight.

Two years later, he is finally getting around to an opponent that will challenge him in the way that he wanted to be challenged after the Tackie and Tszyu fights. And if he plays his cards right in Vegas and KO's Castillo, he could be in line to fight Mayweather, Miguel Cotto, Shane Mosley or any of the other tough challenges and names that are out there.

But he's going to have to be more spectacular against the bigger names than he has been against the lesser names in order for anyone to continue to take him serious.

allegedly replies: Ricky is living in cloud cuckoo land when he says that I didn't offer him big fights, either when he was with me or around the time we parted company after the Kostya Tszyu fight. In fact, I said I would pay him the exact same purse he eventually received for the Carlos Maussa fight, which went ahead after he left me.

In writing, I had previously offered him fights with both Floyd Mayweather and Miguel Cotto, which his father declined on his behalf.

Following the Ben Tackie fight, I made an interim WBO light-welterweight world title fight for Ricky against Kelson Pinto, but Pinto pulled out at short notice due to a dispute with his manager, but that was nothing do with me.

I also got Ricky into a position where he could fight then WBA world champion Vivian Harris, but typically Ray Hatton said no.

It was me who insisted that Ricky have a clause in his contract that he fight Junior Witter, and although that fight did not come off because we couldn't get Sky or Showtime to take the fight, the fact it never got off the ground was greeted with relief by Ray Hatton.

That was yet another fight he refused - and his reluctance has been proved by the fact Hatton has continued to show no interest in taking on his biggest domestic rival in the two years since we parted company.

Despite Ray's unwillingness to take the fights Ricky claimed he wanted, I kept trying.

Thanks to my expert guidance, I manoeuvred Ricky into an eliminator which led him to becoming mandatory challenger to Kostya Tszyu, a man regarded as the best pound for pound fighter in the world. He had this opponent in his hometown after I made Kostya Tszyu his biggest ever purse to come to Manchester. Hatton has always made a big noise about going off to America to face top-draw opponents, but he simply hasn't done that since leaving me.

Ricky might have had three world title fights, and of course he had to win these fights and did so with great style, but they have not been against big names, and he has vacated titles so he can pick and choose easy opponents.

Maussa - whom he fought in Sheffield - Luis Collazo and Juan Urango are struggling to be legends in their own households, and Collazo wasn't even ranked in the independent top 10 - he was shown up by Shane Mosely last time around. Of the three Hatton has fought, none are currently in the independent top 15.

Although Ricky has fought in America, he looked far worse then when he was fighting on my promotions, in fact, for once he and I agree - he looked shit.

He says he didn't look good against Urango because of his negative style, but it was Ricky who was holding on for dear life at the end. In fact, he was dreadful.

Next up Ricky takes on Jose Luis Castillo, and while that is a step in the right direction, I'm not sure how much a win will mean because Castillo was terrible last time out. Meanwhile Hatton seems no nearer to fighting Mayweather, his so-called dream fight.

About the only thing that we are in agreement on is the fact that Castillo is make or break, because American press, television and fans are becoming increasingly frustrated and bored.

It appears there's no hope now of Hatton/Warren ever working together again. Was Ricky really offered fights against Mayweather & Cotto?

If Hatton was offered a Cotto fight, and it was at 140lbs, then I feel he should have taken it. Hatton would've had a better chance of beating Cotto at LWW. If Hatton-Cotto does happen, it will be at WW.

I believe FW makes some good points in his reply the the interivew with Ricky.

What do you all think?

Ricky comes across as typically gracious in his comments about FW. Warren, whether you believe him or not, as usual comes across as a complete arsehole.

But if he is speaking with facts it doesn't matter. We are all losing heart over this Hatton US Invasion and alot of people are coming round to the view that it wasn't Frank that didn't want the big fights.

Although I think I remember Hatton saying in his autobiography that Warren wasn't too keen on the Tszyu fight.

Who knows eh?

Frank getting him the big fights? Like 14 WBU title defenses. Warren should concentrate on lifting Calzaghe and Macca's reputations, which are sinking fast.

Does anyone seriously believe Warren would let him go rather than get the big fights, Bollocks Hatton has been taking the piss for years.

I for one definetly believe he was offerred the fights he left Warren to make more money and be more in charge off his own destiny , and for all the bullshit about wanting the big fights its clear he don'r want them, BRING ON WITTER.

My view - come on, Hatton, Warren, Calzaghe - they ALL piss about. They all waste ppl's time. Hatton is universally recognised 140 champion, and he keeps fighting alphablet titlists? This doesn't make sense. Warren would've kept Hatton at the MEN and I believe would've matched Hatton in a way that complemented his style. Mayweather wouldn't come over here. Cotto is a draw in Puerto Rico and NY.

So Hatton isn't without blame and you hear all sorts about his last minute money demands, whether true or not. I spoke to Hatton once and he WOULD NOT entertain the idea of going over to America and bashing up Vivian Harris for less money & a version of the world title.

But allegedly - a guy who brings Bobby Gunn over for Enzo Macca - to say all this & all that is shit. I know Hatton was his biggest draw and thus given precedence over Calzaghe, but I don't believe he was going to get Cotto and Floyd.

To his credit, Hobson has taken the gamble, got Hatton over to America and seen on HBO. Problem was they didn't match him with good styles, after the Lazcano pullout, and couldn't resist chasing after stray belts.

When we see Warren protect his assets, it's good to see the other UK promoters taking risks, and to their credit, Castillo is next.

Warren should be focusing on getting Jean Marc Mormeck and Mikkel Kessler over here. No doubt he's waiting for Kessler to get beaten.

Hatton seems to be full of excuses to be honest, ....the fact is that he is really semi-retired already imo and only going on for the paydays... and because of this his performances have continued to decline in every fight since the Tsyzu bout... and this will most likely culminate in him being beaten by Castillo (if Castillos not too shot) ...the fact that Ricky can still entertain the idea of fighting Gatti says all we need to know about his real ambitions... nice guy maybe but he's taking the public for a ride when he says he wants to be a legend and all that crap... legends dont fight the likes of Maussa, Collazo and Urango one after another, ...and struggle at that!...

I don't disagree that Hatton has to take some of the blame for that long run of WBU fights. And he has to take a lot of blame for his career post Tszyu. But I'd have a lot more sympathy for Frank if it weren't for the fact that every boxer under his wing takes the safety first route. Maybe Ricky did turn down a number of fights. But Mr Warren can hardly be accused of putting on the fights we want to see. Maccarinelli-Haye would be the best example. And then we have the continued joke that is Calzaghe's career. And do you think we'll see Khan or Mitchell fight for the British title this year? No, neither do I.

Hatton's career has been crap since he left Sports Network. But I really don't see that there's any precedent for it being any better if he'd stayed.

Hatton was offered a fight from Mayweather at 140 and 147...his dad turned down both.

Think what you like about Hatton - though I note several of the posters slagging him off now also picked Tszyu to beat him convincingly two years ago - but to buy the picture FW is painting of himself as some great matchmaker looking to put his fighters in with the the most dangerous challengers only to have his lily livered fighters back out - well you would have to be naive beyond belief to even half believe that nonsense.

Yeah, some of us picked Tszyu to beat him, I did!... I also thought that after leaving FW and beating Tszyu he really was going to go for the big fights and stop fighting unknown fringe contenders!... how wrong I was on all points!.... ok now he is fighting Castillo, but what happened to Cotto, Mayweather, Witter etc etc etc... he's only going in with Castillo because he's just about done after the Corrales fights....

hatton never wanted that summer fight and they got in a pants opponent for it to add insult to injury.

it's all old news anyway. hatton still has it all to play for and warren is out of it.

the mayweather fight didn't make sense back in 2004. i'm not convinced talks ever got serious on a cotto fight.

arum still ain't exactly calling out hatton for cotto is he. it's a fight that arum wants to do down the line when hatton is on the downslide in my opinion.

hatton was always beating tszyu ffs.

particularly the sharmba mitchell fight.

why didn't warren pay out to get him over. :-?

even going back further and getting a guy like mickey ward or jesse james leija back in 2002.

instead of that it was stephen smith and joe hutchinson. guys that came in cheap and therefore more in the pot for the promoter.

i agree on the mayweather fight.

i think it's dead now, but only cos mayweather is retiring.

Likewise silkov you must have forgot hatton was fighting a 35 year old tszu, because you picked tszyu for a quick knockout.

...not really, the fact that Hattons done nothing since and that nuthuggers like you are still hanging on to the Tszyu win for dear life 2 years later makes me feel a whole lot better!!.      ... Hatton is basically just a media creation with just one decent win behind him (and if the Tszyu win was such a sure thing then he shouldnt get much credit for that either!) :TU: ...and who hasnt even proved that he's the best 140 boxer in Britain, let alone the world! :x :o  8) :-? ... if you're happy with the way Hattons careers gone then you're sadly deluded...

Because Ricky didn't want to take a cut in wages and he didn't want to risk the Hatton money train. Based on the Collazo fight the similarly styled Mitchell may well have caused Ricky a few problems.

hatton was drawing 16,000 people.

why should he take a cut.

warren should have paid up for that fight.

no excuses i'm afraid.

it was obvious i was joking.

although i did tip hatton to win the tszyu fight.

tszyu had obviously seen better days by the time he fought hatton.

i think hatton gives him a good fight at any stage in his career though.

Because Mitchell wanted £1m or £750k and Hatton would have wanted £750k-£1m himself. Do you expect Warren to make a loss? Because the gate and TV money may not have paid both fighters wages.

At the time Mitchell was still dangerous and Mitchell-Hatton would certainly have been 50-50 from Warrens perspective. Hatton doesn't have the 1 punch equalising power Tyszu had to get him out of jail (and Tyszu was getting outboxed in the first fight), Tyszu probably would have KO'd Collazo too. Styles make fights and all and if Collazo could take 6rounds from Hatton maybe Mitchell could have back then. Not saying Hatton wouldn't win but a loss was a distinct possability back then.

Sharmba Mitchell? Hatton not only didn't want him but he got beat by Tszyu. This was a done fight before both boxed Tszyu. Mitchelll lost to Tszyu, as interim champion, simple as that.

Hatton turned down Mayweather and Cotto more than once. Why doesn't someone ask Bob Arum to confirm it, surely he has the letters on file.

Hatton wanted no part of Witter either, never did and never will.

You're all buying into this 'Peoples champion' BS when the truth is to coin a phrase from his own father "Why worry about who he fights. Those morons would fill thre MEN to watch him fight Mickey Mouse" And that ones on tape I hear!

Shows how much he thinks of you lot and your hard earned!
