but still, the only time Kessler has been mentioned on allegedly.tv this year is
how informative they are on the "next best" in their top fighters divisionLucky number seven? Intriguing boxing politics in Denmark, where the purse bid for Mikkel Kessler's mandatory WBC super-middleweight title defence was won by Palm Promotions for $1,777,777.
The respected Kessler's end is $1,333,000

Don't know about better, but certainly more ambitious.
Let's face it, there is absolutely zero chance of Calzaghe ever fighting Kessler. Kessler would have to concede venue, purse, options, and probably have to agree to 'slaps only' to get the fight.
In seriousness, the only way I see it happening is if Calzaghe were offered a massive purse to go to Denmark for his final fight.
Kessler is beginning to overshadow Calzaghe, by his willingness to take on the genuine contenders of the division, rather than the losers of the contender series.

I think Kessler's a totally proven fighter. Doubt his boxing ability? He beat classy boxers Beyer and Mundine. Doubt his stamina/chin/movement? Look at his shutout of giant hard nut Andrade.
Even though Calzaghe had his belt 10 years, Kessler is the better champion. Kessler has controlled just about everone regardless of style. Calzaghe had some top showings, but look at his flail at Reid, get dropped by Salem, drawn into a maul by Bika.
It's clear who the more accomplished ring general is - Kessler. Also, Calzaghe is SO easy to hit. That is probably why there's so much messing about with opponents.

I actually think part of the problem with Calzaghe's performances, is that he is very arrogant, and when he takes on someone he knows he could or should beat easily, he neglects his defence and just goes steaming in there. That's what he did with the likes of Salem.
I remember Calzaghe turning in a very impressive performance, against that Mkrtchian, where he simply boxed off the jab all night, stayed out of trouble, and didn't put a single foot wrong before stopping his opponent. It was the mkrtchian fight I think I'm thinking of.
Ok, so Mkrtchian wasn't exactly top draw, but it proved that Calzaghe could box technically when needed. Against Lacy his use of angles, movement and positioning was absolutely top draw, though of course you can argue that Lacy's inexperience and shortcomings as a fighter allowed this to be so.
At the end of the day, we need to see Calzaghe and Kessler fight one another to resolve this issue, but sadly, I have little or no confidence in this fight ever being anything more than the matter of hypothetical conjecture on boxing forums, which is a crying shame.

Andrade acknowledged Kessler is class after the Dane dominated him on Saturday. Calzaghe-Kessler won't happen and Frank won't be mentioning it anytime soon either. He's too busy poking fun at Frank Maloney over a duplicated advert in Boxing News and other pressing Boxing matters. Calzaghe-Kessler is hardly top priority.
that wasa good performance, but Mkrtchian (who went on to win the European title) like Lacy is a stocky squat fighter. Not sure Calzaghe could box like that vs a tall master boxer.jamesmcdonnell wrote:I actually think part of the problem with Calzaghe's performances, is that he is very arrogant, and when he takes on someone he knows he could or should beat easily, he neglects his defence and just goes steaming in there. As I said, his opponent was of the kind that allowed him to dominate with ease, but I do think that with Calzaghe it's as much a case of him throwing his boxing skills out the window and going for it against inferior opposition as it is any perceived lack of boxing skills.mad gear gang wrote:that wasa good performance, but Mkrtchian (who went on to win the European title) like Lacy is a stocky squat fighter. Granted Calzaghe would struggle to box Kessler from the outside in a similar manner, but his use of angles and his speed of movement and punching, would present problems for Kessler also.
Kessler, despite being a thick set bloke, showed some outstanding movement vs Andrade last Sat. Used some beautiful sidestepping and pivots to get outside of Andrade's left hooks and right hands. He'd slip, move, counter - with a stinging punch just on Andrade's blind side. Absolute masterclass. Not a fluid fighter like Calzaghe, but a master technician.
I think theoretically, Calzaghe CAN be sublime. But it's like he has to be inspired. Or upset. To bring out the best. Kessler - for me - is just so much more professional. He does the job. His last five fights were vs proper world class foes - Siaca, Lucas (ok, past it), Mundine, Beyer, Andrade. He either broke down the opponent via KO/TKO, or won a shutout.

Definetely dookus, Calzaghe has never in his career shown the sort of desire that Kessler is. A breath of fresh air to the super middleweight division. A shame Lacy didn't beat Joe really as I reckon we'd have a unified champ by now (not talking about Lacy's ability as a fighter but his will to travel to prove himself the best).
Also Heather Mills is far game as far as the tabloid press in this country are concerned, his comments are very tame compared to some.

I agree James - It is so easy to neglect the skills that Calzaghe has in his armoury, because most of the time he chooses to fight rather than box - I recall the Mkrtchian fight, and Calzaghe chose to box in that fight. It was plain to see that Calzaghe has a fantatsic jab...when he wants to use it.jamesmcdonnell wrote:

It's also fair to say that Calzaghe has a total lack of respect for his opponents, hence the somewhat messy performaces we see from him i.e Bika - It will be his undoing one day.
He's a stubborn fighter - him and his dad presumably never decided to reine the style, that enables him to catch right hand after right hand. Probably why the big dips in competition. Calzaghe has a lot going for him, but I don't think this has been highlighted very consistently in his career.
I think Kessler is the best fighter in an awesome, talent filled weight bracket (160-168 pounds). You don't see Jermain Taylor in a satisfyingly complete performance vs a big puncher.
I hope no one's going to say that Calzaghe and Taylor would've dominated Andrade. Taylor's not shown a fraction of Kessler's ring generalship & fitness. Calzaghe can't even fight Mundine - as if Choc was going to take a small purse to fight in the UK, when he makes millions at home!

What proof Is there of zero chance? Most have said the same thing before he battered Lacy, Taylor's fighting Spinks and Hopkins Is fighting Winky.jamesmcdonnell wrote:Don't know about better, but certainly more ambitious.

Who else could their be after Manfredo? Butes going for Bika who was never IBF rated until he fought Calzaghe and Froch knows he ain't ready.
Kessler got HBO coverage too, so they might get Calzaghe to fight him.
You can't always get a good fight right after a good fight.
Well Andrade hasn't exactly beaten anyone other than Otis Grant. Thats how he became WBC mandatory and Andrade's amatuer career was not very good, 2 wins out of 14 to 16 fights according to HBO.
I hope no one's going to say that Calzaghe and Taylor would've dominated Andrade.

Well, the evidence of Calzaghe's career would suggest there is very little chance of the fight happening. Calzaghe isn't going to give Kessler the payday he would desire to make the fight happen, because in his own mind, Calzaghe has already proven himself to be the best.Max Molyneux wrote:What proof Is there of zero chance? I hope I am wrong, I really do, because if Calzaghe were to fight and beat Kessler, think what that would do for his standing as a fighter, to have seen of not one but two talked up challengers to his superiority at the tail end of his career.
If Calzaghe was to fight and beat Kessler he would retire the best champion at 168 ever in my opinion, If he dosn't fight Kessler he will be in the same league as Ottke and a few other 168 pounders as a fighter who avioded his main rivals.jamesmcdonnell wrote:Well, the evidence of Calzaghe's career would suggest there is very little chance of the fight happening. Apparently, it's Kessler next after Manfredo. So says Frank, anyway:

I have my doubts. But at least he's noticed that Kessler exists, which is a start.
