Great Cards

Post by Ambling Alp »

What was the best card in the history of boxing? Here the major fights of a few great cards that I have thought of:

September 6, 1920 (Benton Harbor, Michigan)
Jack Dempsey-Billy Miske
Harry Greb-Chuck Wiggins
Sam Langford-Bill Tate

March 4, 1968 (New Nork, NY)
Joe Frazier-Buster Mathis
Emile Griffith-Nino Benvenuti

September 28, 1979 (Las Vegas, NV)
Larry Holmes-Earnie Shavers
Wilfredo Gomez-Carlos Mendoza
Sugar Ray Leonard- Andy Price
Roberto Duran-Zeferino Gonzalez
Michael Dokes-Jimmy Young

Can't remember how many of the fights on this card were televised. Maybe someone else does?

November 30, 1979 (Las Vegas/New Orleans)
Sugar Ray Leonard-Wilfred Benitez
Marvin Hagler-Vito Antuofermo
Marvin Johnson-Victor Galindez
Thomas Hearns-Mike Colbert

I don't recall the Hearns-Colbert being televised. I remember watching the other 3 on ABC.

March 31, 1980 (Landover MD/Las Vegas/ Knoxville, TN)
Sugar Ray Leonard-Davey Boy Green (Landover, MD)
Larry Holmes-Leroy Jones (Las Vegas)
Mike Weaver-John Tate (Knoxville)
Eddie Gregory (later Eddie Mustapha Muhammad)-Marvin Johnson (Knoxville)

All four of these fights were televised live. ( I believe ABC)

Which one was the best?
What are some other great cards?

I think Ric is referring to the 3 day card in New Orleans on Sept 5-Sept 7, 1892.

It featured
George Dixon-Jack Skelly
Jack McAulliffe-Billy Myer
John L Sullivan- James J. Corbett

That had 4 legends on one card, and one of the historically important fights in history.

The one that Terence mentioned was pretty good too, especially if you like heavyweights.

Hard to pick which one was the best. There has to be some great ones that haven't been mentioned. So far I'm leaning toward the November 30, 1979 card with Leonard,Benitez,Hagler,Johnson,Galindez,Hearns etc.
