Now Filipovic doesnt match up well for Randy at all.... Too quick, takedown defence too good....hard to see how Randy can win that....Kilburn wrote:I still thought Sylvia would make all that extra size count somehow, instead he barely had any success in that fight whatsoever.
Watching Couture recovering in between rounds though makes me wish he really would properly pack in in. 43 year old men surely should not be putting themselves through that. But you know he'll already be putting his plan together to beat Cro Cop.

It was just awesome to see the athlete that Couture is though.
Despite being 43 he is in near perfect nick and it was a pleasure to see him outbox, out think and take down almost at will that lanky, boring oaf Tim Sylvia.
I was writing Couture off before the match - thought Syliva was too big, too young with too much power. Goes to show what will, skill, determination and fitness can do.
As for Cro Cop, I can just see Couture zigging or zagging his head in the way of one of Cro Cops left kicks and it being 'good night Captain America'.
Having said that Couture is a good tactician, so it will be interesting whatever happens.

I watched the video of UFC 68 last night, and it was a great win for Couture vs a the much bigger Sylvia. Having said that, Sylvia was crap apart from showing some solid defence on the ground. I cant help thinking that Cro Cop would beat them both one after the other though.
Good comeback win for Rich Franklin as well.
UFC is quite a good watch, but is a bit too WWE and glitzy for me, and will never be as good as

NSAC: Chuck Liddell Passed Drug Test After Incoherent Appearance on Talk Show
Posted by UFC Junkie on March 26, 2007 at 8:38 am ET
UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell was forced to take a random drug test by the Nevada State Athletic Commission after his bizarre appearance on a Texas television morning talk show earlier this month.
And he passed.
That’s the word from today’s Los Angeles Times.
Liddell appeared on WFAA’s Good Morning Texas on March 1 to promote the movie, 300.
The UFC superstar was incoherent and nodding off during the interview. At one point, the interviewer, Gary Cogill, had to shake Liddell awake and ask if he was okay to continue the segment. (You can watch the clip on YouTube.)
The appearance prompted some UFC fans to wonder if the champ was perhaps drunk or on drugs. Liddell’s trainer came out soon after and said Liddell was simply sick, short on sleep, and tired from sleeping pills he had taken.
Concern over the incident prompted the NSAC to issue a drug test.
From the latimes.com (may require registration):
http://www.latimes.com/sports/boxing/la ... rts-boxing
Well, there’s really no more definitive proof than that. And I’ll be the first to admit my speculation of drug and alcohol use was completely wrong (though Lunesta is some fairly powerful stuff).“I had pneumonia and a fever,” Liddell said.
The fighter said he was out late, then took the prescription sleeping pill Lunesta and an over-the-counter dose of Nyquil before waking early to make the television appearance, which can be viewed on YouTube.
“I needed six to eight hours of sleep and only got three,” Liddell said. “They should’ve never got me out of bed.”
Following the rambling, often incoherent discussion, Liddell said he was ordered off the promotional road by UFC President Dana White, and was subsequently subjected to a random drug test by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Keith Kizer, executive officer of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, said Liddell passed the drug test.
“He’s been tested several times and has never ran afoul of our tests,” Kizer said. “Chuck was in a weird state on that show. I don’t blame people for being concerned about him, but he silenced his critics.”
I do hope this story gets picked up by the same media outlets who blasted Liddell earlier this month, as well.
In any manner, I’m off to eat a big bowl of crow.
(Thanks to FightOpinion.com for the scoop.)

For those that are interested, below is a download link for Jeremy Williams' latest foray into the world of MMA.
For my money he is the first boxer of note to try and conquer the MMA world. Of course, after that moody KO loss to Samuel Peter you have to question his punch resistance (he always had a dodgy set of whiskers, lets be honest..) - how long before he gets KO'ed in a nasty way wearing 4oz gloves??!

Also - for those who have got a taste of the MMA game, here is the main event of the bill - UFC vets Frank Twigg and Robbie Lawlor throwing it down in a slober knocker..

HBO — not the UFC — will get to choose the announcers who commentate the UFC broadcasts on the subscription-cable giant.
That’s the word out of today’s conference call with UFC president Dana White.
Earlier today, I mentioned that the two sides had finally inked a deal after months of stalled negotiations. The UFC, which currently broadcasts its events primarily on pay-per-view and Spike TV, began talks with HBO earlier this year. The new deal would apparently put a few UFC shows on HBO beginning this summer.
However, as part of the deal, HBO would be in charge of the production and would use HBO broadcasters. That means that the UFC’s official crew of Joe Rogan and Mike Goldberg (and Randy Couture) will be replaced — mostly like by HBO Boxing’s stable of broadcasters — during all HBO broadcasts.
However, when asked if HBO Boxing analyst Jim Lampley (one of the UFC’s most outspoken critics) would be one of the broadcasters, White gave a definitive “hell no.”
Just within the past month, White admitted that control of the production had been the primary point of disagreement and that it was holding up the deal. It appears he ceded that control to get the deal done.
Although HBO Sports was initially against airing UFC events, it’s hard to imagine the channel intentionally sabotaging the broadcasts. And as White stated today, he wouldn’t agree to such a deal if he didn’t feel completely comfortable that the events would be handled in a professional and suitable way.

Not too sure about the news above – I cant see old Larry Merchant being able to differentiate between an omoplata and kimura, along with all the other grappling nuances of MMA.
Max Kellerman might be able to adapt to commentating on the sport but why do away with a natural and knowledgeable guy like Rogan? The team of Joe, Goldberg and Couture was working just fine in my opinion.
Will the news of a UFC deal with HBO have a negative impact on the channel’s boxing output? I hope not, although recently Showtime has been offering the better, more interesting fights..

As Realdeal's Gif shows it was a stunning head kick KO. The Croatian went down as if shot.. A stunning upset in the main event.HairyBoxe24 wrote:So much for Couture - Cro Cop, Cro Cop got KO'd in the first round by Gabriel Gonzaga with a leg - kick for those who didn't see it.
The show last night was awesome - it easily rivalled Tyszu v Hatton for insane atmosphere but it was a far better run event with a deeper, more evenly matched card.
The merchanise stall had a continous que outside of it and must have taken huge money - lots of apparel of sale. The programme was big, glossy and professional with accurate profiles and good photos. A genuine momento of the event.
Production values were high - there was 5 huge screen which showed replays and preview segments before each fight. The were no extended lulls or unexplained gaps between fights.
The post fight interviews were easily heard throughout the arena.
There are so many areas in which boxing promoters can learn from the way the UFC put that show together - including the fact that the cheapest ticket was £25 - fantastic value for 10 fights, over 5 hrs with good, evely matched fights.
The UFC, with their first show in the UK have set the bar to my mind in terms of product on offer. Comparing it to the last Witter Hennessey show at Ally Pally and any number of SN cards I have been to in the last couple of years, it blew them all out of the water with considerable ease.
MMA may not be for everyone but as boxing fans we undoubtedly deserve to receive a similarly high quality, professional product for our money.
Too often we dont.

Sounds like I missed out - I was back in town( well in bolton) this weekend as well, had been thinking for a few months now whether to go or not...oh well maybe next time. Really shocked at the Cro Cop result tho I have to say I didnt kno that much about Gonzaga - with Ufc its so unpredictable, upsets all over the place - first couture over sylvia, then serra over pierre and now gonzaga. Great entertainment but I sure as hell aint gonna be betting on UFC in the future!
I watched Cage Rage on SKY last night and I have to admit I found it pretty boring.
That Abbot bloke who looked well past his best was drinking beer in the cage!!!!
The presentation by SKY was far too WWE for my taste and the two over-excited doormen that presented the show just didn't work for me, with respect.

The thing the impressed me was the fans staying for each fight, usually in boxing fans will only come to watch one fight pay 30-70 pound and go after they won and not stop for the main event. I thought it would of been a mistake for Michael Bisping to come on a few fights before the end, but it wasnt. His fight was thou one sided most of the time was very entertaining, Main event knock out was one of the best very in MMA history thou i missed it turned my head for a second talking to someone. Might go to belfast to watch 71.
Hope Steve Bunce enjoyed it there. was a couple of feet from cro cop getting knocked out.

I didn't watch Cage Rage, but this video GIF does interest me. Maybe the UFC fans can enlighten me.REAL_DEAL wrote:boom
It seems like, judging by the refs reaction that there is no punching when down if one fighter is in serious trouble. I have seen hitting when down when a fighter is not in serious trouble.
Can I ask three questions.
1) If that is the rules, why did the fighter go for it.
2) Could he have faced a DQ.
3) Why can't they restrain themselves like boxers?

Cage rage is some way behind UFC and Pride in terms of quality of fighters and production, although it is one of the better organisations and certainly the best UK domestic promotion.KOJOE90 wrote:I watched Cage Rage on SKY last night and I have to admit I found it pretty boring.

Havent watched the show yet but I know what you mean KOJoe RE: overblown WWE style of presentation.
I would like to hear Bunce's thoughts on what he saw last night. The atmosphere was electric for the Bisping and Cro Cop fights. Arlovski was a major disappointment in that he looked a little gun shy/stale. Having said that he got a good cheer in the post fight interview. The crowd was largely respectful even when the Machida and Arlovski fights failed to ignite.
1) it isnt the rules, you are allowed to hit a grounded opponentstujones wrote:

2) NO, only if he continued trying to hit him after the ref had intervened
3) like Tyson or James Butler?? Of course the fighters restrain themselves, but in either sport you get the occasional dickhead. As soon as the ref indicated the fight was over then he stopped the attack.
The referee jumped in because he could see Mirko was in no position to defend himself. Had Mirko been dropped but had his senses about him the ref would have allowed it to go on.
Not really. Gonzaga is just a tough match for Randy if not more.Kilburn wrote: Some Couture fans may be breathing a sigh of relief.
Physically huge grapplers like Rico Rodriguez and Josh Barnett chased Randy out of the heavyweight division in the first place and Gonzaga is a top level jui jitsu world champ with excellent strikes.
Couture really did look doomed up until this weekend, but we've just seen another big upset. Nobody can really be sure of victory in the UFC at the moment.ebeneezer wrote:Not really. whilst the piece contained inaccuracies - UFC was in Britain previously for UFC 38 - Bunce did capture the general feel of the show well enough.states wrote:http://sport.independent.co.uk/general/ ... 474455.eceREAL_DEAL wrote:Hope Steve Bunce enjoyed it there. was a couple of feet from cro cop getting knocked out.
Lets hope boxing responds by upping its game and showing why it has been the premier combat sport for over a century.
