I agree the Smith fight should have counted. However let's be realistic about the Wright fight. He was thrown in with a complete bum who had a .500 record. I don't think that should have counted he fought a replacement.
True - but didn't Reid fight on the contender so should've counted?
Yeah, I said Smith-Reid should have counted. Not the Nigel Wright fight though.

maybe if it was spread over a few divisions then the uk would stand more of a chance. say 1 fight from each of the origanal weight divisions, from fly to heavy.

Hey maybe i should copyright that idea
I don't know, on paper you are correct - but on paper here I thought this was very 50:50 maybe I'd have given a slight advantage to the British fighters. I thought for the most part we have the size advantage in these fights plus home advantage.

Its not like these contenders are geniune contenders... theres been one or two stand out performers - Mora, Smith, Forbes who are obviously alot better than British title class (maybe Fringe world contenders) and a few others that are probably European title class but no futher (Manfredo, Brewer, Gomez, Joey Gilbert) etc - the rest are comparable with our guys selected... or so I thought.

3-2 Robin Reid is back with a win... points over Jesse Brinkley.

Brinkley's not the best of boxers.

3-1 for the USA on the fights, that Warren said, counted.....
ffs.

that's a crock of shit.

all of em should have counted.

gomez-conception is a mismatch.

why should that count and reid-brinkley not count.

Yes they will do - they are full blown fights, not exhibitions of some kind..

Something might be starting to smell.

I'm sure the Reid one will count - just the site hasn't been updated to say 3-2... Its only just finished.

Wikipedia stated that originally Smith vs Reid was an official one. So they had to drop it two 7 cause the Wright fought a guy not on the show. So they dropped it now to 6 a nice even number, if you get my sceptical thoughts.

fightnews.com said the smith-reid fight wasnt counted in the team standings because the stoppage was premature and unjustified!! it will still count on the guys' individual records though!! paul smith and anthony small are clearly the bright spots for the brits in this one!! :TU:

Here's a very brief synopsis of the fights as i saw them.

Paul Smith TKO7 Reid, Nigel Wright RET2 Nelson - these 2 fights were off tv and didn't count towards the tournament score.

Small SD Wright

I've seen Anthony spar a number of times and it was strange to see him have trouble with an oppenent. He seemed to be content to keep bouncing around out of range. He keeped trying to counter but Wright was too cute to leave the openings and would hardly ever lead. This led to a boring first few rounds and disapproval from the crowd.
Small was wary of Wright's boxing and Wright was wary of Small's power - stalemate.
Small was landing a shot here and there and not allowing Wright to land hardly anything so he must have been accruing the rounds.
A fight broke out in the last round and wright came better off Small got a bad cut and was rocked a number of times but held on. His usual style of low hands & leaping in from the outside just won't work at this level.

Curiel KO8 Minter

Fight of the night. Very impressed by Minters fitness he was on a non stop search and destroy mission a la Macklin v Moore. Keeping the pressure on Curiel and digging in hard hooks constantly. Curiel soaked up a huge amount of punishment but managed to keep Minter at bay until dropping him with a big left hook. He got up too soon and fell again when the ref stopped the count. Great tv fight. Have to feel for Minter as he must have been ahead on the cards but salute Curiel.

Gomez rsf7 Concepion

2nd favourite fight of the night. I haven't seen Gomez since the first Contender series and was suprised at his improvement. He is quite a bit cuter than he once was (as Watt might say). He started off at a easy pace and gradually turned the screws by avoiding one-twos and landing flush counters the left uppercut especially. Concepcion showed great heart by never appearing discouraged and firing back with occasional success but he got hurt and turned away forcing the ref to stop it. 4 concecutive losses means i reckon Frankie will bin him unfortunately.

Ravelo UD8 Buchanan - ties with Small Wright as the most boring fight of the night. Ravelo almost exclusively jabbed and moved his way to a victory. He didn't want to close the show and Buchanan didn't know how to get into the fight.

Reid UD8 Brinkley - i thought Reid was a little lucky. He looked in great shape and was obviously much bigger naturally but after a sharp looking first two rounds it fell into the usual mode of mauling and low workrate. Brinkley started to stand right in front of Reid and the fewer punches that Robin landed clearly had a greater effect so i think that's how he clinched (pun intended) the win.

Bundrage KO7 McNeil

K9 the crowd favourite was getting outboxed by Colin early who also had his eye closing from a couple of big rights which suprised and staggered his opponent. Colin was getting a lot of coaching from Barry and was keeping control with long one twos and keeping the centre of the ring. He seemed to run out of the steam necessary to keep it long and started to take some heavy fire. He went down twice from big rights to the body and got counted out.

These are on tv from 23 Apr on ITV4

These results show that good standard club fighters are better than guys considered good enough to win British titles.

barely any of that team are prospects.

conception lost 3 in a row before the fight ffs.

minter is area level at best.

buchanan a prospect.

smith was one of the better ones and he weren't on the team. :-?

small seemed to have the only real learning experience of the night and wasn't in over his head like conception and buchanan.

it's a shame alexander pulled out and we didn't have smith in the team.

we could have won this.

ffs i'll do the team picking next time.

your sacked mcguigan.

Ross Minter gave a fantastic performance and was one punch away from stopping Curiel in the fourth.
He just copped one at the death from a 15-year pro. That's experience.
