Michigan Golden Gloves

Post by fenix »

The Michigan Golden Gloves are about a week away and was just curious if anyone here has any info about who's gonna be there or anyone to watch for? Esp. guys like Jovann Carr & Jordan Shimmell (top ranked amateurs) and/or some of my local favorites like Joel Ramos, Jovonn "Pink Panther" Barnes & Jarvis Edwards?

The East MI GG had their tournament registration yesterday. I don't know everyone who entered, but I'm sure Jovann Carr (201+) was one of the entries. I know Ernie Garza (last years 125 champ) entered at 125. There are many others that will make for some exciting bouts at the East MI GG with competition starting this Thursday, March 22, 2007 at the Perani Center in Flint, MI.

Jordan Shimmell (last years 201 lb. champ) will enter the West MI GG at 201 this coming Saturday. Jarvis Edwards (last years 178 lb. champ) will also enter the West MI GG at 201. Jovonn "Pinky" Barnes will enter the West MI GG at 152 (last years 141 lb. champ). Eric Grant will enter the West MI GG at 165 (lost a good bout against Andre Dirrell in the 2004 MI GG). Joel Ramos - I'm not sure what is going on with him. There are many more skilled open class boxers that will be boxing in the West MI GG. There are also many novice boxers who will make for some exciting bouts in the Novice division. The West MI GG tourney starts this Saturday, March 24, 2007 - 7 pm at the Grand Valley Armory at 1200 44th Street SW, Wyoming, MI.

Thanks for the info. Edwards vs Shimmell sounds good. Pinky vs Adrian Castonon (last yrs champ-assuming he's fighting at the same weight or at all) also sounds like a good fight I look forward to seeing. Do you happen to know if Ryan Schmidt and Tim Skolnik are gonna be fighting this year?

Ryan Schmidt might box in the West MI GG, but I doubt if Tim Skolnik will. Jarvis Edwards easily defeated Tim Skolnik in November 2006 with Tim weighing about 220. I don't think Skolnik will enter as a super-heavy and I doubt that he will have his weight down under 201.
Edwards v. Shimmell happened in December with Jordan winning the decision. It was a great bout and I'm sure a rematch would be an exciting bout for the fans. There are other good boxers in the class so there is no guarantee that they will face each other, but it definitely could happen.
Barnes v. Castanon - I like Adrian, but I think Pinky would win this one. It could be an exciting bout though. There will be more names from the past and a few new ones to keep things exciting.

The only open class bouts were in the 201# class.
Jordan Shimmell decisioned Stacy Harrington
Jarvis Edwards decisioned Allen Basic

BTW, neither Ryan Schmidt nor Tim Skolnik entered the Michigan GG tourney. They could enter the Wisconsin GG as they both attend NMU.

The East MI GG and the West MI GG both had a huge number of entries. I think amateur boxing is having a resurgence in popularity. The attendance at the West MI GG tourney opener was great - 1,800 to 2,000 fans.

This Saturday at 152 pounds, "Pinky" boxes Anthony Willis, a strong 17 or 18 year-old from Battle Creek. If Pinky wins, he will box the winner of Adrian Castonon (last years 152# champ) v. ?
165: there will be a very good bout - Ben Williams v. Eric Grant
201: Another excellent bout - Jordan Shimmell v. Jarvis Edwards
201+: 4 big guys battle to make the West MI finals

On the east side of the state, they also have some great bouts coming up. In the Eastern MI GG finals, they are going to have a great match-up of super-heavyweights. Jovohn Carr v. Mitch Williams. It is the classic boxer v. puncher scenario. Carr is the boxer and Williams is the KO artist. They each are about 225-235 pounds. Go to Flint on Thursday, April 5th and watch because it could be an explosive bout.

There were some very interesting bouts tonight.

201+: The East MI GG champ, Mitch Williams, lost a close decision to the West MI GG Runner-up, Ryan O'Neil. Then the West MI GG champ, XXX XXX, lost by RSC to the East MI GG Runner-up, Jovohn Carr.

201: Jordan Shimmell won by RSC-H after just 54 seconds of the 1st round. The crowd was deafening when Jordan was announced before his bout and then again after he won. The armory was packed - probably 2,000+ fans.

178: Dion Savage won a close bout and will face Chris Mason in the finals.

165: Alious Griffin won a close bout over Eric Grant and will now face Ben Williams in the finals

141: Percy Williamson won and will face Federico Flores who also won his semi-final bout.

132: West MI GG Champ, Raeese Aleem, won his bout by RSC and will have a rematch with the West MI GG Runner-up, Cody Varnadore who won his bout by decision.

The rest of the results will have to wait as I will copy them from the newspaper. I was wrapping hands and getting guys ready and missed many of the novice bouts.

Bout 12: Richard Munoz (16 year-old, will turn 17 later this month) is boxing at 119 (defeated Mike Estelle 2 weeks ago in an exciting bout) against Joel Ramos (2006 112 Open champ).

Bout 13: Ernie Garza, 18, (2006 125 Open champ) is boxing Mike Estelle (moved up from 119) at 125.

Bout 14: Raeese Aleem in a rematch with Cody Varnadore at 132. Raeese is a good boxer - good hand speed & power. He has a decent chance of winning some bouts at the National GG depending on the bracketing even though this is his first year in the open division. I believe Raeese is still 16 (but turns 17 before the August 1st cutoff) and he is doing well for being so young.

Bout 15: Federico Flores, 18, v. Percy Williamson at 141 which should be a good bout.

Bout 16: "Pinky" Barnes is boxing Adrian Castanon at 152 (rematch of last week's bout).

Bout 17: Alious Griffin, 18, (2006 165 Open champ) v. Ben Williams (2003 & 2005 165 Open champ) at 165.

Bout 18: Dion Savage, Jr. v. Christopher Mason, 17, at 178. Dion has never won the GG, but he has competed at the U.S. Championships. Chris is coming out of the J.O. division and is surprising some people.

Bout 19: Jordan Shimmell, 18, (2006 201 Open champ & Nat'l GG runner-up) v. Vernon Washington at 201.

Bout 20: Jovohn Carr (2004 & 2005 201+ Open champ) v. Ryan O'Neal at 201+.

I can't comment on Bolin's bout as I was wrapping hands at that time and didn't watch it.

Thanks for the comment about Jordan - we are looking forward to his bout tonight.

There are 20 bouts scheduled for tonight - 9 novice and 11 open, including 2 women's bouts in each. As you can see a lot of the open class boxers are young. Jovohn Carr is only 19 or 20. Joel Ramos is only about 18 or 19. Mike Estelle is 17 or 18. Many of these open-class boxers have a lot of experience from the J.O. class and can just jump right into the open-class without missing a beat.

It is going to be a great show tonight!!!!!

Yeah lots of young guys this year. Its going to be interesting to see what happens over the next couple years with alot of these guys.

Lots of interesting matchups tonight. Joel Ramos, Ernie Garza & Raeese Aleem are all guy I'm impressed with, but haven't seen much of and even less of their opponents. First time seeing Federico Flores, who I've heard of & know has quite a few bouts already, but it didn't really show last night IMO. I don't think Williamson will give him as much trouble as Aronold Smith did though. I think "Pinky"-Castonon, Griffin-Williams & Savage-Mason are all pretty close bouts that either guy could win. Shimmell & Carr are probably the two guys most proven on the national level in tonights bouts & I'm thinking they will show why tonite.

Too bad about Jarvis Edwards getting arrested I was looking forward to the fight with Jordan. Good luck again tonight (not that Jordan needs it from the looks of him last night). :D

Yes, a lot of young guys and interesting match-ups tonight. Flores is very good and experienced. He had difficulty with Smith and Smith lost to Williamson last week. However, that doesn't mean that Williamson will be as difficult since styles make fights. Williamson is good though so I anticipate a good bout.

Richard Munoz is going to be a tough match-up for Joel Ramos, especially since Ramos had a cow kick him and step on his face just 2 weeks ago (I'm not kidding - he works on a farm and had to get lots of stitches). Richard has improved dramatically in the last 4 or 5 months. I'm expecting a great performance out of Richard tonight.

Yes, it was too bad that Jarvis made a mistake(s) and was arrested. Jordan had been looking forward to the competition. Jordan now has to face the East MI GG champion instead. He is focused on winning his second straight GG title.

fenix - you can come introduce yourself to me at the show. I may already know you, but just let me know if I do. I'm getting ready to head over to the Armory soon. See you there.

Stepped on by a cow!!! Thats not a very common injury I'm assuming/hoping.

Good call on the Ramos-Munoz contest. That fight was razor close going into the last round & then Munoz took over & dominated. Raeese Aleem got a good challenge too. He's still my pick for someone to watch, at only 16 this kid is only gonna get better. And I gotta say that "Pinky" Barnes is a defensive genius (not that the crowd appreciates that kind of thing) and thoroughly defeated last years champ Adrian Castanon by just pecking away at him and barely getting touched. Oh and I thought Justin Jones (Floyd Sr's son) looked like he's got some raw talent there, seemed to have very good movement for a novice.

At the Nationals I see Jordan Shimmell being Michigan's best shot at a title. JoVohn Carr, Ernesto Garza & Richard Munoz could also do some damage. And I wouldn't be shocked if Raeese Aleem & Jovann Barnes make some noise, but with Aleem's lack of experience & Barnes' unappealing style I wouldn't bet too much on it. Federico Flores, Dion Savage & Ben Williams seem like solid boxers, but nothing about them strikes me as putting them in contention at Nationals besides a favorable draw or uping their game. I have never seen Robert Bell fight so I don't know his chances, but I've heard he's won some minor titles (JO?/Ringside?}.

Dennis-woulda said hello if I saw you. I'm not affiliated with amateur boxing, just a fan, so we haven't met before. Good luck at Nationals. Can't wait til next year when Nationals come here.

fenix - I am the 6'6" guy in Jordan's corner. I appreciate the fans so I am always willing to say hi to someone who supports amateur boxing. Jordan is also very approachable and shook hands with many fans and autographed their progams for them over the weekend.

What did you think about the crowd last night? I think they need to bring back the bleachers so that there is more seating. There were hundreds of fans who had to stand for hours.

No, the cow thing isn't too common for boxers - LOL. However, farmers are well aware of that risk. Our gym's head coach is a cattle farmer and he has mentioned that you have to be careful around the cows.

Raeese almost lost his bout in the 3rd round and will need to get in better shape to go 4 rounds.

Yes, the fans didn't appreciate Pinkie (that is how he spells it and even had it shaved into his hair last night), but he is a very gifted athlete. I have sparred with him and he is very fast and hard to hit (deceptively so). Some of the movements he makes require tremendous coordination, flexibility, agility and speed. I was impressed that he boxed 3 rounds and barely got touched (especially considering he moved up a weight class and was boxing last year's champ at that class - 152). Pinkie also scored lots of points each round. If computer scoring had been used, Pinkie may have won by RSC-O in the 2nd round. Now if we can get him to work really hard for the next 2 weeks, he could make some noise at the nationals. Otherwise, you will probably be correct about his chances.

Robert Bell has some talent, but lost by RSC-3 at the Midwestern Trials. I forgot to put him on the list, b/c he was an uncontested champ. I will edit the posting to add him.

Did you see Jordan v. Stacy Harrington several weeks ago? Stacy is a great young man and we are friends. I hated to see them have to box each other, but am happy to report that Stacy is going to be boxing at 178 soon (he has slowly lost the few pounds necessary to do so). He is planning on going to the Eastern Trials. I think he is going to be a beast at 178. It looks like Jordan and Stacy could be roommates again in the near future.

This young Michigan team is very talented (with two elder statesmen in Pinkie and Ben - being between 23 and 25) and could do some damage at Nationals. I am very excited about this team's potential.

Ryan Schmidt (125) and Tim Skolnik (201) are in the finals of the Wisconsin Golden Gloves on April 21, 2007. Ryan is boxing Jesse Carradine who is also from NMU. Tim is boxing Rayvon Wilson of Moreland's.

Sorry didn't mean I didn't see you I just didn't run into you. BTW nice suit in the corner during the semifinals. Its about time fashion was brought into amateur boxing.

The crowd is always impressive at the golden gloves I try to get their early to make sure I get some decent seats. They definitely need more seating or a different venue. The live entertainment they had this year was a nice touch, although if I was about to box I'm not sure I'd wanna be hearing country music.

Pinkie's definitely gots skills, he's like an artist in the ring. Does he box for you or just train there sometimes? I hope he does well at nationals he's one of my favorite boxers to watch.

No I didn't get to see anything except the Michigan GG, missed all of the Western Michigan GG. So Stacy Harrington is good? Thats a guy I've been hearing about since he was like 13 or 14 (I'm guessing he's around 18 or 19 now), but haven't had a chance to see. He's from my hometown, South Haven & used to (or maybe still does) box for Benton Harbor PAL, where I used to live.

I think this team will have a couple guys that go deep (or hopefully win) nationals.

fenix - OK, you obviously saw me. As an attorney, I wear a suit everyday. I didn't have time to change b/4 our first couple of boxers' bouts. I heard a lot of positive comments, but I think I will stick to more casual attire when I have to do corner work. A suit kind of gets in the way.

Pinkie does train at our gym and boxes for our gym, but since he lives in Muskegon he isn't at the gym everyday (travel time and gas prices make it difficult).

Stacy Harrington is a very good boxer and a nice young man (he turned 18 a couple of months ago). I've known him since he was 10 or 11 when Jordan competed against him for the first time. The bout took place at the Golden Gloves tournament. He and Jordan have had many close bouts over the years (they each have won several), but they prefer being friends and teammates rather than opponents. I am not sure if Stacy is training at the Benton Harbor PAL or not. He was recently training in South Haven. I coached Jordan (201#) and Stacy (176#) at the 2005 National J.O. tourney. Jordan won gold and Stacy won silver. We had a great time at that tourney in Brownsville, Texas.

Does South Haven have a gym now? I haven't been back there in awhile. I heard someone was trying to start one quite awhile back, but never heard anything else about it.

Hey BTW what was with your boxer in the novice division (125lbs i think) that was trying to be a tough guy? I've been going to the Michigan GG for years now and don't think I've ever seen a MGGA boxer even come close to being as disrespectful as that guy was to his opponent.

fenix - He is an older guy who was having his first bout. Randy and I were appalled at his lack of sportsmanship during the bout and especially after the bout. However, it took a lot to build up his courage enough to get him to compete. Unfortunately, he then went overboard. We were caught off-guard due to it being his first ever bout. He was going up against a guy who had 10 bouts of experience. Yes, we pride ourselves in teaching good sportsmanship and have kicked boxers out of the gym who couldn't abide by our demands. If he competes again (at least for our gym), he will display better behavior.
