Shorty and Big Boy Hogue
Shorty and Big Boy Hogue
Anyone know anything about the Hogue twins, Shorty and Big Boy.
1934 -1943
Hoping for infor on these twins, given names, birth and death dates. Shorty held a Middleweight Belt in California, what year?
What happened to them, families, careers, children, military service?
Did they fight anyone of note?
Any and all infor would be appreciated.

Below are links to both of their records with birthdate and date of death. They both were good fighters. Big Boy Hogue won against mainly third rate fighters and never really scored any big wins, but Shorty Hogue was a top rated middleweight who scored some very impressive wins in his career including two decisions over Archie Moore, one over Lloyd Marshall and one over Eddie Booker as well as wins against a slew of other top rated fighters.

shilor---Well you had already sent me an email thanking me the next day after I posted, but thank you...I'm always happy to provide anything that I can.
Boxscribe---I think this is Harry Otty, which if it is then he has a ton of info on the welter and middleweights of Hogue's era and he certainly is more knowledgable than I am on the topic and could better answer things than I could as I have not done a whole lot of research on either Hogue brother, but would be really interested in hearing anything about the two...especially Shorty.

Shorty and Big Boy weren't twins. If you're ever in San Diego.......
What proof do you have that proves that Shorty and Big Boy were not twins. One born 12-25-1919 and the other 12-26 1920 was thought to be an error in reporting.
As far back as I remember, l946, I was told they were twins, born in OK and moved to CA

Of all the information I've read on the Hogue boys, everything has said that they were twins. I did quite a bit of research on the LA Times and other California newspapers and I never came across anything that indicated otherwise.Decagon wrote:Boxscribe is Harry Otty.
Shorty and Big Boy weren't twins. If you're ever in San Diego, check out the microfilm on them. They were from around here, and there was a lot of coverage of their fights in the local papers.
Harry, how many press clippings of the two do you have?
Speaking of mistakes, I think that the photo attached to Shorty Hogue's bio on BoxRec is actually Big Boy Hogue. I have photos of the two and Shorty had the wider jaw and Big Boy the thinner face.
I have all of the press clippings from Charley Burley's scrapbook detailing the build up, fight reports and aftermath of the fights with Shorty and Big Boy. There is a lot more on Shorty - including photos of him with his championship belt - than Big Boy, but I have other items I have collated from several newspapers that goes back to their amateur careers.
I am missing is an obit for Shorty - so if anyone comes up with one....
I have photos of both Hogues taken at the same time (originally had both of them on it, but was split into two).
The photo on Harry Shaffer's site, that has been linked to Shorty Hogue's bio on BoxRec, is definitely Willard 'Big Boy' Hogue.
How can that photo be replaced with one of Shorty and the existing one linked to Big Boy?

Harry, you can login and upload images/edit the pages on the boxrec wiki yourself. All you need to do is create an account and then upload the files.Boxscribe wrote:I have photos of both Hogues taken at the same time (originally had both of them on it, but was split into two).

But I do not believe there has been a meeting of the minds between Shilor and Boxscribe, so I'd be reluctant to see anything changed in those Wiki pages until there is some consensus.

Ric is right.
After several emails between Shilor and myself it seems that the picture of Willis 'Shorty' Hogue on Wiki may actually be of him. The initial thoughts that the photo may be wrong came from the press reports I have of the Burley V Hogue(s) fights and press reports on the two.
Shorty was always described as the bigger of the two and was sometimes refered to as a middleweight and Big Boy a welterweight. After sending the reports and pictures to Shilor, her opinion is that Shorty is the photo on Wiki and a couple of the pictures in the press reports I refer to have been mis-labeled.
I am still not totally convinced though as a picture of Shorty (prior to the Burley fight) show him in his Ca championship belt and I think that looks more like the other half of the photo I have (not the current Wiki one) that I originally thought was Shorty. It also looks more like the photo of Shorty (with Cliffird Judd), from the Harry Shaffer website.
A photo of Big Boy prior to the Burley fight looks more like the photo currently on Wiki and Shilor believes that this photo and one from the Burley V Shorty press reports have been mis-labeled.
To add to the confusion, the birth dates of both boys - on BoxRec and Wiki - are different. Indicating that they may not have been twins! Further research on the California death index supports that data - so Decagon may be correct also! But, before we get carried away, all the press reports I have on the two boys refer to them as twins. Some of these reports go back to when they were 130-pound amateurs at high school.
The plot thickens!!!
What I may do - just to add to the confusion (LOL) is post the photos I have of the boys and let everyone (anyone) interested make a judgement for themselves. I have no idea how to do that here, so I will post on my website: http://charleyburley.comunder a section entitled 'Hogue Twins'

I think this one my be down to reporting errors as a family member has confirmed via photographic evidence (i.e. when they were babies), that the Hogues were indeed twins.Decagon wrote:Shorty and Big Boy weren't twins. Thank you. That would be a big help.Decagon wrote:It didn't make the Chula Vista Star News. Next time I'm at the San Diego Public Library, I'll look it up.
Hogue Twins
Go to California Death Index, 1940-1997 and you may view Willard Hogue and Willis Hogue Index on their deaths.
They were twins but it appears that Willard started out growing Willis around the age of 8
Shorty was smaller, confirmed by family.
What I haven't confirmed is why the birth dates vary!
