Froch to WBO: do the right thing

Froch to WBO: do the right thing

Carl Froch has asked World Boxing Organisation president Francisco Valcarcel to do the right thing and match him in a final eliminator against Russia’s Dennis Inkin for their Championship, currently held by his long-term rival Joe Calzaghe.

Welshman Calzaghe, 35, has held the WBO title for ten years but his last mandatory defence, a 12 round domination of American Jeff Lacy, was over a year ago.

Undefeated Froch, 29, notched up his 21st victim with a devastating two-round demolition job on Russian Sergey Tatevosyan in his home city of Nottingham just over a week ago and is now ready to battle the world’s best.

The British and Commonwealth champion, who is promoted by Mick Hennessy, hopes to face Calzaghe before he retires and believes it can happen later this year if the final eliminator is confirmed.

Froch is ranked third by the WBO, but is set to move up at least one berth. Current #2 Lucian Bute was taken the distance last time out by Tatevosyan and has opted to contest an eliminator for an alternative championship.

Inkin is still currently ranked above him, but the emphatic nature of his win over Sergey Tatevosyan should see him leapfrog into the top spot. Froch already had the far stronger record.

“The WBO needs to find a suitable, mandatory challenger for Calzaghe,” said Froch. “At the moment I feel he is cashing in on easy money fights, like this one against Manfredo. He’s not a credible challenger. I would blitz him in a round.

“Fighting me could potentially be the biggest fight in British Boxing history. If Joe was forced to take it, I think he would do.

“If I became his mandatory contender, it would cut out all the usual nonsense. Options wouldn’t get in the way of the fight. This fight has the potential to smash all British purse bid records and whoever wins, it would be a massive affair.

“If my promoter Mick Hennessy won, the fight would most probably take place at the Nottingham Forest ground. If Calzaghe’s people won, they may use the Millennium Stadium.

“Joe would have nowhere to hide. If he didn’t go through with the fight everyone would know why. If we got into that position and he somehow managed to wriggle out of it, I would personally hand him the four feathers.

“That is why I think this fight can happen. The timing is perfect as well. By the time the purse bids have been called for a final eliminator and I have actually knocked Inkin out, Calzaghe will be due his next mandatory in September.”

Froch continued: “The only way for the WBO to find a suitable mandatory fairly, is to take their number one and number two and make that final eliminator. I would like President Valcarcel to do the right thing. I’ve heard he is over for the Calzaghe fight later this week, perhaps the British press can ask him personally?

“Although the WBO mandatory is due first, I don’t see any reason why the fight couldn’t be a final eliminator for the WBC title as well. The way the ratings are now, I am about to become their number one and Inkin their number two.

“That way, if Calzaghe and Kessler did unify, things would tie in nicely. We would have the mandatory for both titles.
“Me versus Inkin would be a big fight in itself and build the Calzaghe fight even more. Inkin is 29-0 and I’m 21-0, we are both big punchers and everything would be on the line.

“We have got amateur history as well. He beat me on points but I put him on the seat of his pants and only the final bell saved him. I will do the job properly this time.

“My promoter has asked the WBO for this fight a few times. He has called for a final eliminator, but the WBO seem to be dragging their heels? If I was the President of a governing body, I would want to find the very best to challenge my champion. It doesn’t really make sense to me.

“Calzaghe needs a proper test. He is a good fighter, but I believe I’m exceptional and there is no one out there he should be fighting except for me.

“There will be more demand for that fight now I've annihilated a world-class opponent in Tatevosyan. Once I win a world title final eliminator, Joe will have no choice but to put up or shut up. Fight me or vacate the belt.

“I’ve knocked out my last five opponents. People are now realising that I don’t just talk the talk, but walk the walk. Other fighters swerve and go round obstacles, but I’m ready and the correct thing for the WBO to do would be to grant me a final eliminator this summer.”

Surely, as a rival champ, Lacy wasn't mandatory?

Which obviously makes the point even more valid.

Do the right thing? Why would the WBO change the habit of 18 years? There are no rules because they are a joke organisation of cowboys.

They will finish the way they started:

1989

Mike Tyson

or

Francesco Damiani?

1999

Lennox Lewis

or

Herbie Hide

It will never change.

Not sure about the 1 round blitzing but the first part is basically what most other people are thinking. I have said all along that Manfredo Jnr is a joke opponent, i stand by it.

Have to agree Calzaghe v Manfredo does look more than a bit one sided but so does Maccas fight and Kahns also - What I cant agree with is, Carl is gonna get ya !!! - Froch had a very good win last time out and has done very well so far with a style that will make him very vulnerable at the top level - Having said that he did have better defense, showed more respect to his opponent and didnt do any showboating like he has in the past in his last fight - Those at the top are all very good and very capable of ending the Froch dream - Inkin who Froch wants next would be a very tough fight for him - Full credit to Froch for wanting to fight the best but you feel its more arrogance with Froch than confidence - 21 - 0 - 0 is a good record but how many times have fighters with a similar record got an and 1 as they have fought the top men - Calzaghe is fighting a yank for big money not to prove anything, we all know he should win comfortably on points - If Froch was to beat Inkin then Calzaghe would find it difficult to avoid him - Joe is at the end of his career and putting money in the bank is obviously more important than a domestic fight to settle a score with Froch who has been calling him out for at least the last three years - Yes its a fight Froch wants and us also so lets hope it happens - Dont believe for a moment Joe is worried about Froch, he isnt - Joe has to have a hard fight next time probably Kessler but maybe Froch if he gets past Inkin - I firmly believe Joe can beat Froch, his workrate would be too much for Froch to handle - Froch has proven he is a good opponent at near world level but can he beat Inkin, Kessler, Mundine or Calzaghe thats what we need to know before saying Froch is true world class.

This sport is gonna end up dead if the fighters and the managers and all the organizations don't start fighting the fights the public want to see.

Least in the UFC they are damned determined to have the best of the best fight eachother. No wonder they are beating us on the PPV race, and its pretty bad when PRO WRESTLING is having boxing beat as well.

I walk into a store to buy a boxing magazine and often see the shelves empty, and not because people are 'snatching' them up. No, boxing is killing its own self off, and when you have 20-1 wrestling magazines against boxing, or 10-1 Kung Fu martial arts against boxing as well.

It shows we are no longer in demand as we once was. It's times like this, we need to start picketing and demanding HBO/SHO and other networks to start showcasing fights we all want to see, else we wont watch them any more.

If the assholes cant understand respect and common courtesy from the fans, and be grateful that we are their cash cows, not the boxers---then maybe they would if we cut the cash flow off at the heart, and open their eyes.

We want the RIGHTFUL to get their shots, we want UNIFACTION, we want the fights we demand to see and not just dream about. No. It's time for us fans to do the right thing and show them WHO RUNS BOXING.

That's right: US.

Exactly. Calzaghe's last mandatory was Veit - 2 years ago to the day when Joe fights Manfredo.

If JC finds the minerals to get in the ring with Carl, then Calzaghe gets KTFO!!! he won't reach the halfway mark IMO

Froch can punch but that won't always ensure his victory. Calzaghe would dominate Froch easy.

Why Is It when someone can punch that the majoirty though not all think that will ensure there victory?

Froch's Ko wins were against Euro level fighters at the most, Calzaghe's world class.

Absolutely, I will go along with all that - Too many people seem to be jumping the gun including Mr Froch himself - Talk of Froch beating Calzaghe is a bit premature and optimistic - Most people said Calzaghe would be beaten by Lacy and look what happened - Lacy didnt get any sort of chance to land a bomb on Joe and IMO neither would Froch - Calzaghes handspeed would overwhelm Froch who would be on the backfoot trying to keep out of Joes way and survive his onslaught - Froch likes a slower pace, while Joe likes to storm his man and would definately catch Froch with his guard down - Joe is a proven world class fighter while Froch has yet to gain that status - Froch is an improved fighter better than most in the division but he still has to fight and beat Inkin in his quest for Calzaghe, which still may not come off - Calzaghe may fight Kessler or Mundine instead who knows - Joe is after big money fights before he retires whereas Froch wants to prove a point and get a world title at the same time - Totally different ambitions with one man desperate to get there and the other having been there for years and wanting to bank as much as he can - I think Calzaghe would be doing Froch a big favour by not fighting him because if he did Froch would need to regroup and start all over again - Joe has fought exactly twice as many times as Froch and has a wealth of experiance having fought so many fighters with so many different styles - Eubank was an awkward fighter just like Froch - Joe can handle any style and still win - No signs of him slowing down as yet either, so beware Mr. Froch, dont be too eager wait until he fades and maybe you might stand a chance.

Workrate would trouble Froch too when Froch Is on the back foot.

I thought Dodson was nearly going to give Froch trouble with workrate until he's was Ko'ed by the bodyshot.

Should be Froch in there on Saturday rather than Manfredo. I'm sure Joe only wants the glory of a win over Hopkins, not stopping to consider the non-record merit of other guys. It's all about Hall of Fame now, far above what could be memorable challenges.

My ideal would be Calzaghe vs. Froch leading to Kessler for the winner. Seems reasonable. Another massively unlikely match is Haye vs. Hide. Pay-per-view's killed competitive boxing.

Would love to see Calzaghe cane Hopkins. Hopkins has really outstayed his welcome and in truth should be REVILED for doing shit all for the first 6 rounds of both Taylor fights.

But why bother when there's so much in your own division. Hopkins has the shitest weight class imaginable and threatened to pull out of a fight with ROBERT ALLEN because of a REFEREE...What a cock.

In truth we're too obsessed with familiar names. This is what fukcs the sport. Old men milking their name in series' of non fights.

Joe's got Kessler and Mundine, Froch and Inkin - make the effing fights. These will be exciting, classy, fast paced fights. Who wouldn't want that?
