Earlier you said Ali taking a “sh*t in the middle of the ring” was used as proof he was the "greatest of all time", now you’re saying Holmes. Which is it?granberry wrote:If Holmes pulled down his pants and took a sh*t in the middle of the ring,

I'm confused now. I always thought it was the well-known Ali industry shills at HBO who ordered Joe Frazier to take a dump in the middle of the ring in Manilla.
Can't a boxing historian help us out here?

Collins, John L, pundit,
all know that every fighter who has ever gone into the ropes is termed "knocked down"
because their fellow mental midget Dempseyfire found an opinion posted on a website that says so (with extensive disclaimers).
When Jack Dempsey landed a left hook on the neck and Tunney fell into the ropes in the 4th round of their first fight,
the referee did not call it a knockdown.
When Doug Jones staggered Ali with a right hand 15 seconds into the first round of their fight
and Ali staggered backwards until he hit the ropes,
the referee did not call it a knockdown.
Apparently those referees need schooling from Dempseyfire and his band of idiots.
Good post, Pundit. Too bad the rest of this thread pretty much went to hell.pundit wrote:The by far most remarkable thing about this clip it's Holmes unbelievable recovery power. He dominated the rest of that round.
I can't deny Brocky's assertion that Holmes was headed for the audience, were it not for the turnbuckle. But I suppose that's what turnbuckles are for, eh? Holmes then gathered himself remarkably well. Lot of great champions were down in fights, including the great Joe Louis.

The clip with Holmes-Snipes was interesting. However, it does show a problem with film. People watch a few seconds from a fight on youtube or wherever and come to sweeping conclusions about a fighter. You can make anyone look good or bad with a highlight or two.
Thankfully you can tell from the tape that there was no super long count.

Yeah -- it's a bit like saying "he would have been KOed by that punch had his opponent not worn gloves".kingpawn wrote:Good post, Pundit. Holmes, in my opinion, was the last really dominant HW champion. Seven years as champion, 20 title defenses. Crappy era or no, he was dominant as could be. The only drawback to Holmes was not unifying all the titles, whether it was money or ego, that's the only drawback to Holmes.
I would have loved to have seen Holmes take on Page, Coetzee and the other WBA trinket holders from time to time. Dokes would have been a good fight as well.

No heavyweight champ totally dominated. Holmes, Ali, Marciano, Dempsey, Louis, Tyson etc..etc.. none of them totally dominated the division, they sometimes struggled, had close decisions, tough fights or got beat. You could pick holes in anyones career if you want to.granberry wrote:Yep, he really "dominated" Mike Weaver, Tim Witherspoon, Carl Williams, Reynaldo Snipes.HomicideHenry wrote:Holmes, in my opinion, was the last really dominant HW champion.
And all were novice level fighters.
And he never gave one of them a return fight.
I agree Holmes did fight some 'novice level fighters' and had some close decisions but he would have been a tough fight for anybody.

I do remember someone saying that Holyfield was the beneficiary of an 8-count in that Cooper fight that he should not have received. It may have been Bernstein.
I did not see a long count in the Holmes fight at all the count looked very legit. Although if that little mexican referee who reffed Lewis-McCall was refereeing the Holmes fight he may have stopped it.
