Nice ideas, Terence. Wanna go halves?Terence wrote:We should buy the WBU and turn it into an alternative to the Euro title, some odd fights and rankings pop-up in the European rankings and the judges are shite a lot of the time.
We should buy the WBU then re-brand it. Then we can dismiss the idea that the holders are world Champions and style them as European fighters who want to give the Euro belt a wide berth. Our inaugural act could be a title for Damaen Kelly. We could wangle a ranking with other world bodies and you never know it could become a respected European title.
Our manifesto could include the end of a job-for-life judging. If you make a mistake you are dragged away for some Soviet style political rehabilitation. If you keep showing you cannot judge a fight you get binned. Same for referees.
If national anthems are booed the fighter whose fans are doing it is reprimanded and we can abandon the trend of predictive judging shown by the, mostly, excellent, Jim Watt. You know what I mean, Watt sees a pattern develop and judges the next three rounds based on this, the other guy has to machine gun his foe and the entire front-row just to get an even round.
We could out-do the WBU by, call me a rampant innovator, awarding our belt to people and then allowing a history to be formed around it.
Boxing fans of the world unite, we have nothing to lose but our sanity and a myriad of lawsuits to gain.

It's an interesting idea, but at 300,000, I doubt we have the collateral.
I have a sneaking suspicion
Surely the best move with any ranking body, would be to begin by giving your belt to the most deserving or lineal champ in each division, whichever is more compelling. This is of course easier said than done, but the very intention of doing so is a good beginning.
Then have a ceremony awarding the belt to each of these fighters. In some cases it would be likely you would be awarding it to a fighter who doesn't even own a belt, like Pacquaio who has what, the IBO?
Then undercut the other sanctioning bodies, by reducing sanctioning fees to 1%, rather than the standard 3% which I think they all demand.
The WBU doesn't have mandatories it says in their manifesto, but I suspect that is because they don't have the clout to enforce them, accurate enough rankings, or enough fighters to make it work.
The suggestion with judges is an interesting one. However, this would be difficult in the case of UK judges, as the only way to become a judge is to first become an A class referee, there is no independent way to become a boxing judge, and thus there is a small pool of judges to draw from.
The ideal situation would be to have your own specific judges drawn from the best available talent, but in the case of the BBBofC, they would refuse to recognise your commission if you were appointing non BBBofC trained judges from the UK.

I think the only gap in the market now is for a sanctioning body that carries some credibility. The IBO is just about there, but obviously lacks prestige to get the top names consistently. The only quibble I'd have with the IBO is that they enforce a mandatory once a year. In addition, I'd like to see them reduce the proportion of boxers who qualify for the title (an IBO challenger must currently be in the top#35 of their rankings, which does clear away a lot of dead wood, however I'm told they do aim to reduce this.)
So anyway the WBU alledgedly (optimum wordhere) have computerized rankings. If they are actually half-decent, I'd use them in a similar way to the IBO, but stipulate all challenger's must come from, say, the top 20. I'd also enforce a mandatory once a year (#1 or highest accepting challenger.)
With such stringent checks in place, it would become the most credible sanctioning body out there, and would have in place the conditions to crown the undisputed in each division. However, I'm not sure the promotors would be too keen on such disgustingly stringent and decent rules.

Yeah? Well you know what this could be a revolution - a governing body owned by the fans, for the fans. And each investor would eventually get his money back throught sanctioning fees and so forth. Am I the only one getting excited?jomothepure wrote:Well apparently It's down to 300k, so lets say they'd accept a serious offer of 250k. 1% share for £2500black panther wrote:Hey what if 750 members of boxrec chipped in £1000? A lot of people new to boxing through watching it on ITV no doubt believe the WBU belt is for a legitimate title - Something needs to be said so that these newcomers are not mislead/misinformed - The Lonsdale belt is still the one to have and that should be the goal for any British fighter on his way up - WBU or Intercontinental titles are a joke and need to be abolished - ITV should make it clear the WBU title is only recognized in the UK, and that most British boxing fans dont recognize it anyway - Ricky Hatton never called himself a world champion until he got the IBF belt - Matt Skelton won the WBU title and vacated it straight away - Lets hope the WBU is bankrupted or the garden shed burns down.

Price now down to £225k
http://www.businessesforsale.com/World- ... -Sale.aspx
However, their website (wbu.cc) has been sold by the looks of it. Is it too much to hope that this is the beginning of the end, and that Frank is still doing the WBU thing because no one knows any different?

Saved me a post. They are a cancer on the sport.steve689 wrote:Terence i know your post was not meant to be an anti-WBU rant and i respect that. So allow mine to be an anti-WBU rant. The WBU like countless other Boxing "organisations" are a pile of shit. The fact tv stations like ITV keep mentioning them, calling them world titles and bringing them up only gives more credence and credibility to these organisations who are -to be blunt- wrecking the game. And for the record the "main governing bodies" as they are called are only fractionally better.
That's what i think of the WBU. £750,000?? That is the biggest joke i have heard this year!
If money was little object too me, I would get a high profile fighter with a "nice guy" reputation.... someone like Lennox Lewis would be ideal as a spokesman for the company, strip all current WBU champions of their titles and award the the title to the true number in the devision.oliverfennell wrote:
What would you do if you bought the WBU?
Don't just say "disable it", or whatever, because that would be a waste £750,000. Constructive answers, please.
Go to town on the problems of the Big Four, how the International/continental titles have gone from legitimate stepping stones to just programme/advertising fillers and highlight certain fights that shouldn't have been sanctioned / bad decisions, the over use of eliminators etc.
Just potray an image that we would not be corrupt our rankings would be sound and system the best for the sport. Make is a high profile as possible and hopefully get the fighters to ditch their existing belts and keep the WBU one.
A pipe dream, of course - but look how much fighters and the press respect the Ring Championship belt in such a short space.
You would be better of staring your own sanctioning body and get publicity with a mission statement along the lines of rankings based only on merit, no stripping of titles except in circumstances where the no1 contender is avoided for over six months or extended inactivity, cheating or failing drugs tests etc.Terry D wrote:We should buy the WBU and turn it into an alternative to the Euro title, some odd fights and rankings pop-up in the European rankings and the judges are shite a lot of the time.

You wuld not offer preferential treatement to any promoter and any offer of backhanders would be reported to the Police.
Thank you Ian. I keep hearing Junior Witter saying Ive got the best title the WBC belt. What a load of bollocks. The WBC are the most corrupt, crooked outfit in business. I laugh when I hear these fighters talk about how great the tiles are. Personally, I dot give a toss for titles, I just go on the quality of the match and the ring ratings.Ian 'Mr' McNeilly wrote:Saved me a post. not strictly true in the past, as Tyson lost his IBF title to Buster Douglas in Tokyo, also he defended ther IBF title against Tubbs in Tokyo.oliverfennell wrote:Still is in Japan.Max Molyneux wrote:How did the IBF become big too?
It was just the WBC and WBA until the 80's.
So maybe its just Japanese boxers that arn't allowed to fight for anything else other than WBA or WBC titles.

Seriously, asking price now 225k, say they'll accept 200k if that. That's 100 of us good folks chip in £200 for 1% in the WBU. It would be do-able.
KO Artist is right though. Starting your own would be far cheaper. You could even put some do-gooder whiter-than-white spin on it - say you're only allowing the finest match-ups in the world. Unless you're given lots of money.

Offer them £50,000. What makes it worth any more than that?jomothepure wrote:Well apparently It's down to 300k, so lets say they'd accept a serious offer of 250k. 1% share for £2500black panther wrote:Hey what if 750 members of boxrec chipped in £1000? I'm serious! Dibs on president!
What you dont want to be doing is buying a company. You will have tons of fees in due diligence, and there would be loads of hidden liabilities and skleltons in the closet.
Ill take a look at it. Can you get hold of an informations pack and the co name so I can get some searches going?

I think the ceremony needs to be high profile as possible. Hence my call to have someone like Lewis as the face of the JMO.

I go on the basis of never trust the 'net but it is a bit dodgy.
We should give them a ring, ask how the sale is going and see if we can knock the price down a bit. The number is on the site.
Think it's been up for sale for about a year.
I liked the earlier reference to taking the 'jewels' out of the belt and selling them. How much is Zircon worth nowadays?
The first thing to do is to design a belt that somebody would want to wear. The others are bloody hideous. Something along the lines of the Lonsdale Belt would do nicely.
And can someone explain to me what the deal is with computer ratings? I never check rankings as most are utter bollocks. How can a computer rate fighters better than a person?
