Yeah, Peter was weaving and the last couple shots before it was stopped did not even hit.That ref proably stops anyone that goes down

Terry O'Connor is and always has been a crap ref.

How he gets to be a class A ref I will never know.

He was useless in Danny Williams v Michael Sprott II

And now this.

O'Connor should be allowed to ref Junior Amatuer kids and thats it.

At the end of the day, however, Manfredo never belonged in the same ring as Joe. He had no idea and was never going to find the range.

Those on here who thought that Manfredo was underrated need their eyes testing.

The 'rope-a-dope' aspect of fights is a recurring problem these days. Manfredo wasn't hurt, and so was just riding it out, hoping to momentarily tire Joe into making a mistake.
Unanswered punishment is a tactical world away from unanswered shots.

I believe Kessler can beat Calzaghe after tonight; even though we know JC would raise his game. He'll take apart naturally smaller men, and he'll spear the bullish likes of Lacy, but I think the consistent rhythm of a Kessler is enough to trouble him.

Someone who's quite fast with decent footwork, and most of all, a boxer who can calmly keep focus under pressure. Those are the qualities I see beating Calzaghe. Taylor's probably too slow getting into range, and Hopkins hasn't got the stamina anymore. Froch could give JC hell, though perhaps not last the distance. Mikkel edges it on points I feel.

That was a bad stoppage, but Peter still would have went on to lose by a late TKO or a decision. He has no business fighting at 168 either. He needs to drop down to at least fight at 160. This show did nothing for Khan or Calzaghe for the American public. They were both in there with outclassed opponents on paper and it held true in the ring. I don't think Calzaghe beats Kessler or Taylor to be honest. A really bad fight card here for the states......

At best the punches that were landing could have perhaps turned a 10/9 round into a 10/8 round.

How on earth can they tell a ref that the opponent is in no fit state to defend himself or continue.

He was defending himself, that's all he was doing. If he persisted in this without fighting back he should have been warned with a disqualification.

I think O'Connor should be made to explain himself.

Terrible, fuckin terrible stoppage. Manfredo was never hurt, he got blitzed with Joes slaps, but had his hand up and started to weave and the ref calls it of, for fucks sake

The HBO viewers must think we in Britain are trying to turn boxing into a non-contact sport!

What is wrong with giving a fighter his shot in a world title fight?

O'Connor blew it badly and should be admonished/punished for his clear incompetence.

If I had shelled out for that card I would be seething!

Let's face it. The problem was the fight itself and the fantasy peddled by The Contender show. It was clear that Manfredo was a) completely outclassed and b) totally unable to defend himself.

I feel sorry for Manfredo. He's been egged on by Sugar Ray, Manfredo Sr, and both UK & US TV lapped up the story. Calzaghe was on top of his game and Manfredo - though not hurt - was not able to return fire.

Yes, O Connor was a nob, yes the punches weren't flush. But come on, at this level there shouldn't be this kind of mismatch.

Look, let's be mature about it. Same thing happened with RJJ vs Tony Thornton and to an extent RJJ vs Merqui Sosa (though Sosa was dropped & then shoeshined...). Calzaghe like Jones has perfected the 100 fist slap owned by STREET FIGHTER 2 sumo wrestler E. Honda!

Joe looked good. Seems his hands were fine and he fought sensibly, short punches, stay composed, be fast...Just what he needs for Kessler. He's got an easy win over Ring magazine's #10 ranked contender...But on the whole, this easy payday (& who wouldn't want one) only serves to highlight how badly we need to see Joe vs Kessler.

Loads of my friends were asking why I wasnt going to the Calzaghe fight - when I told them it was a mismatch backed by an appaulling undercard they were genuinely taken aback.

It goes to show what a load of old bollox the public wil buy as genuine sport, but you can only defruad the public for so long before they grow weary and stop buying tickets..

I would have normally been there tonight but instead will be in manchester in a couple of weeks, spending my money at the UFC.

Boxing is shooting itself in the foot by offering poor fair like this.

As for Calzaghe's blinding handspeed, how many landed? They were all slaps on the gloves. My brother who doesnt like boxing was watching with me and said "he isnt even hitting him, they are pitter pat slaps hitting the gloves"

It was a great stoppage.

The referee recognised what a farce the fight was; he recognised that Manfredo should NOT have been in the ring with a fighter of Calzaghe's calibre & took the 1st opportunity to pull him out.

The ref saved Manfredo from an almighty one sided beating.

Some of the shots were getting through and we all know that Biritsh refs get jittery when one guys unloads and the other doesn't fire back. Manfredo wasn't hurt but was totally flustered and unable to compete. Bad stoppage but a worst fight.

The stoppage was near identical to Roy Jones v Tony Thornton.

I actually felt Calzaghe looked fast and healthy in there. It was an easy night for him, no injuries and he appears fresh. I've been fancying Kessler over him for a while but I don't see how last night's happenings really show us how he fares with Kessler.

Certainly still has the speed and that's what he needs to offset the classier, less gimmicky, more honest Kessler.

It was just a bad, bad idea from the start, was Calzaghe-Manfredo, and I hope Warren, Sugar Ray and McGiggle are hanging their heads in shame.

Dreadful show, another reason why ppl will choose MMA.

and as for the ref in the khan fight, every time steffi bull tied khan up the ref split them up and warned bull !!

hatton did it 100 times worse v urango and got away with it, where is the continuity in refereeing standards ??
