On ITV 4 he said Manfredo would last 6 rounds.

Then 10 mins later on ITV1 he said Manfredo would last until the 10th?.

I think he's trying very hard to popularise boxing -with ITV and his Contender involvement - but the best shows are not being put on, so he can smack of insincerity.

He should have bet £1000 at least; it's not as if Manfredo had any chance whatsoever & it's not as if SRL can't afford it!!!!

I thought it was very insulting to the real top guys of the division how McGuigan claimed Khan was already better than them.

Who has done more than Thaxton to deserve where he is?

He also said within 18mths Khan will definitely win a world title

McGuigan is nothing short of embarrassing...a total sell out to SN/ITV.

People never forgave Buncey for selling out with his Audley Harrison praise when he worked for the BBC...who can ever take McGuigan seriously again??

McGuigan is just doing the job he is paid to do and that is sell a product (ITV Boxing). I am sure we all have to do things in our jobs that we don't like or even agree with. The man is just earning a living.

However, I did disagree with many of his comments last night and felt some of his comments about 'Superkhan' were a little bit disrespectfull towards some of the UK's other Lightweights.

I agree McGuigan was WAY off saying Calzaghe may well be the UK's greatest ever Boxer, very misleading thing to say.

You should replace one Irishman with another and bring in Steve Collins, he at least speaks whats on his mind and hasn't been seen on RTE coverage since saying that the Gomez/McDonagh fight was a fix. He may of been wrong but at least he said what everyone was thinking at the time.

THing is when he was on sky, I thought he was the best pundit in the game - very knowledgable,informative,passionate and always spoke his mind. I still rate him put have to agree he 's less inclined to criticise the house fighters these days. But I think everyones being a wee bit harsh on old barry - and the comment about Khan being the best in the country but not ready for thaxton ....he actually said Khan could as in might even be able to beat thaxton now but would be advised to gain more seasoning so he's more certain of victory. Even Thaxton himself has admited Khan has world class potential but needs more experience. For the record I'm not that impressed with Khan - I'll reserve judgement till I see him in with a thaxton or earl.

I do actually rate McGuigan very highly as a pundit-I think he is a lot better than some others in the game. That said, I did prefer him at Sky. He has developed a habit of over-exaggerating the ITV fighters-I'm thinking Kahn and Calzaghe from last night.

The ITV format obviously doesn't help either.

Usually when he is asked to give his analysis of a fighter, said fighter is sitting right behind him after giving his interview to Rawling. On Sky he was in a nice cushy studio and out of ear shot.

Barry isn't there as a pundit. He's there to do a bit of PR for ITV boxing! And to be honest with the crap SN has been putting on lately, ITV need as much positive PR as they can get.
So, he goes OTT about Khan... because that is who ITV were buying when they signed the contact with SN.
Barry did say Calzaghe NEEDS a superfight next (which is probably what ITV desperately want).
McGuigan is employed by ITV. If he'd said all the fights last night were shit and ITV haven't had a world class fight since Calzaghe/Lacy he'd probably be picking up his cards.

Barry knows his game but there is what he really thinks against the ITV hype shit that he comes out with - Yes he was far more honest and factual on Sky but on ITV he has to build the fighters into mega stars and sell them to us for the next event - Calzaghe and Macca are fairly new to ITV viewers who dont have Sky so ITV have had to explain especially in Joes case who he is and what he has achieved - Talk about Maccas huge punch and saying he could even KO David Haye is good to get the viewers excited but who is David Haye, ITV viewers dont see him so most know nothing about him - Wouldnt mind betting most of them dont even know what Ricky Hatton looks like - So a handful of boxers lead by Joe Calzaghe are the stars of boxing and Barry and the rest of the team are basically trying to make out FWs fighters are the best on the planet - I would like to see collaboration between other promoters so that better fights can be made and boxers who are just names at the moment are seen on national TV which is what ITV is - Carl Froch was on ITV at one time, wouldnt mind betting the average ITV viewer has forgotten him or was it BBC it was one of them - Especially after this bill of forgone conclusions we need a lot better in the future for boxing to survive on ITV - Getting other promoters involved has to improve boxing on ITV even if FW doesnt like it - OK Khan is still learning the game so he has to be tested with different opposition but Calzaghe and Macca need proper fights with credible opponents not the likes of Manfredo and Gunn - Lets hope FW comes up with a lot better and lets hope Calzaghe gets a proper opponent in July.

i got what he meant re Khan straight away to be honest - he can beat them now but it will be a war, and risk turning him into a gatti style fighter. if he learns his trade, another drilzane type opponent or two, end of the year or januray 08, he is ready for Thaxton, Earl, Limond etc

Bazza has risked sounding like a Sports Network yes man. As such, we are taken into the terrain of shameless star building. But that is ITV's own fault because ITV can only deal with one promoter. I believe his intentions are honest - helping bring boxing to a popular audience - but at least he's not going round saying that Haye and Froch don't want big fights...
