There are many boxers that behave above reproach and act as an exemplary role-model for other boxers. We need to give recognition to those boxers and reward them. I applaud the coaches and officials who set the bar high and send athletes home when they don't behave properly as it sends a clear message to all athletes about what is expected of them.
I agree. Coaches should be expected to do the same. Let the example start from the top.

Rua Shea Warren, Mark Davis, and Gary Russell Jr. I am sure they all will be back by Olympic time, but who knows inactivity my drop them and they my not even make the Olympic Team. Good luck!!

I wasn't upset at all. I'm sorry if I sounded that way. English is not my first language and sometimes i have problems translating or get lost in translation. Regarding the toughness of the American Team that's always expected and I hope you guys can have Ruashea Warren in that Olympic Team. The guy have to be a great fighter since he gave such a hard fight to maybe the best Cuban, Rigondeaux. Its a shame they will not be in Venezuela, I would love to see that remach.

Now in respect to all I "should really know or want to know", you are right but since this is a public forum to share ideas, views, problems and all other stuff we might want to talk about the sport we all love, I think it is not in the best interest of this forum to make that comment. But again maybe I'm lost in translation again, so please take no offence and good luck for you too.

Ricky - If you know them - are the twins, Macwilliam and Macjoe Arroyo, still boxing for Puerto Rico? I met them some years ago at a Junior Olympic invitational and ran into them again at the 2001 Titan Games. They used to email me every once in a while but I haven't heard from them in a long time.

McWilliam Arroyo won gold at the CAC Games last year, beating Cuban Olympic champion (now defected) Yan Bartelemi. McJoe Arroyo won bronze at those Games. I'd believe they'll stay for the Olympics.

Dargan

Post by boxfan08 »

Art, I don't know where you are getting your information but Dargan has trained, run, etc. everyday. The only thing he hasn't done is spar and that's because Sports Med recommended that he not do so.

Athletes that are chosen to stay in camp that are not attending competitions also participate in sparring but the camps should benefit them as well. Very few people get the opportunity to train with top coaches free of charge at the Olympic Training Center with all the benefits it has to offer, if they don't view it as a privilege, then they shouldn't be there.

So MW beat Yan! Didn't know that - it's a real accomplishment. I hope they do stay for the Olympics. Hope they'll be in the Pan Ams, too - are they still 106 & 112? Or have they moved up? Couple of really, really nice kids.

Mel:

Yes, Mc William and Mc Joe Arroyo are still in the amateur ranks. And they were in camp with us the last couple of weeks but they are not going to the first qualifier because both of them went up in weight (112 and 119) to our National Championship and lost in their final bout. Now they will have to wait and see if our representatives in Venezuela qualifies or not, if not, they will have another chance to fight in their regular weights (106 and 112) if they win, they will go to Argentina for the second Pan Am qualifier. Very good kids indeed. I'll let them know about this.

He's trained everyday? Isn't he hurt?

I guess he's feeling better, that's great. He'll be going to the PanAm's 100%.

Dargan has an elbow injury that has kept him from sparring and doing specific exercises but has been training everyday and yes, he has been cleared to go to Pan Ams.

Ricky, which is the Puerto Rican team for Venezuela? Is Carlos Velazquez and his twin brother still in the team? Which are the best hopes for the Pan Ams, any new Miguel Cotto?

locoxelbox:

This will be our team in Venezuela:

106 lb Carlos Ortiz
112 lb Joel Narvaez
119 lb Jorge L. Diaz
126 lb Abner Cotto
132 lb Jose Pedraza
141 lb Jonathan Gonzalez
152 lb Jason Marquez
178 lb Carlos Negron
201+lb Gerardo Bisbal

The Velasquez brothers are turning pro next month. I wish them the best. About our best hopes for the Pan Ams...All of us have high expectations on Carlos Negron but I think if they have a good draw these kids will make some noise. :TU:

Thanks, Ricky :TU: . Surprised about the exclution of the Arroyo twins. Do you think their replacementes are better? I doubt that bearing in mind the difference in international experience.

The "every major tournament" you refer to are the National PAL in 2006 and the Pan Am Box-off this year - that's two major tournaments since he lost in the GG finals last year. Most of our top/elite boxers have had many years of major tournament experience/wins since they were JOs. He has also not participated in any international events, turning them down by choice, including the Pan Am qualifiers. All these factors do not make him a good candidate for a medal in China. And, yes, our goal is to win medals. Of course, if he makes the team, he, and the others, will have my full support.

Jeremy is going to beat Karl for the 141 spot in the Olympic trials anyway when all is said and done so all this talk about Dargan and his injury will be a mute point .

Every coach who has a 141 Lber. feels the same way you do, holeymoley. :D Personally, I like both Jeremy and Karl and feel that they are outstanding young men. When all is said and done, may the best man win, whether it is Jeremy, or Dynamite, or another athlete in that weight class.
