A new US rival to Haye/Enzo?

Matt Godfrey, 26 and with a record of 15-0 (9KO's). Has just stopped the very decent Felix Cora Jnr in 2 rounds to win the NABF Cruiserweight title.

Cora Jnr lost to Tokarev last time out (in 4) but up till then was a well respected prospect himself. Who has beaten the likes of Darnell Wilson (whose just KO'd Kelvin Davies) and Arthur Williams pretty easily.

That sounds like an impressive win.

I haven't seen Godfrey fight, but if he's another promising prospect coming through the ranks, then that can only be good for the Cruiserweight division.

The 200lbs category has not had the talent-pool of fighters of other divisions. In fact, in recent times, the Cruiserweight's have perhaps been known as a very poor division.

The more prospects coming up, the better I say.

I can't remember a time when cruiserweight was healthier; then, as someone born in '81 I don't go back all that far.

Maybe it's happened because the limit increased to 200 lbs? As the current top cruisers would've been smallish heavies back in the early-Nineties. What year did they kill off 190 by the way?

It was an impressive win, though the exhaustive nature of the TKO to Brudov may have left Cora's recovery senses depleted - he made no attempt to fire back after a ~13/4 second rest (albeit from quite a heavy knockdown). I reckon Cora would have showed more in the later rounds had he not been caught, but that means little since Godfrey did a good job. He came out with a brash, clear plan and the sharpness to implement it. Who's to say he wouldn't shine in a title fight vs Haye/Macca or any others around that fringe? Very competitive potentials though Haye - Macca against each other is the one I'd rather see.
