Taylor wants 10 million
Warren and Calzaghe really do a lot of pissing about but Taylor's demand is pathetic.
Tszyu was a modern day great and only got $5mil didn't he?
Jermain won't be able to make 160 after this year. And he wants $10 mil to fight for a title in a natural weight?
Never thought I'd hear myself saying this but Joe you need to get on a plane. If all you can get is cut rate fighters at home, you have to go over there now if you want to cement your career.
I doubt Warren would risk that kind of money with Joe's hands.

Alli found was this from 05
25.03.05 - By Ronny Soto: After months of speculation of whether or not Hopkins vs. Taylor was ever going to happen we finally have a confirmation from both camps that they have come to terms. After Hopkins having earlier imposed a 24 hr deadline for Taylor to accept the original terms, which were: $1.5M and options on Taylor's next 3 fights; It is reported that HBO added some money to the pot increasing Taylor’s purse to $1.8M and Hopkins to $3M, and that's without options on Taylor's future fights. The possible date for the match-up is July 16 in either in Las Vegas or Los Angeles.

I would have thought 4-5 million dollars was a pretty good offer.
Taylor obviously wants top dollar because he isn't that confident about fighting Calzaghe.
I have to say, when you hear what the likes of Palle and Taylor are demanding, you do have to wonder whether there isn't at least SOME credence in the assertion that Joe has been avoided by some of the biggest potential opponents over the years. Sounds very much to me like Hopkins priced himself out of a fight at the 11th hour, didn't he ask for something ridiculous right at the last?
I don't see how 10 million is realistic, how much is Joe supposed to accept?
Sounds to me like Taylor doesn't fancy this much.

Yes James, I was told Hopkins just kept shifting the goalposts right up until the last minute. From memory, he was alleged to have named a fee then when his bluff was called he just doubled it.

Unless both sides are haggling ie Warren's $4mil too low / DiBella's $10mil unrealistic.jamesmcdonnell wrote:I would have thought 4-5 million dollars was a pretty good offer.

Hopkins definitely priced out vs Calzaghe, just like Hops always priced out v bigger men RJJ and Toney so he could fight overrated welters.
Joe could looks so much better than Hops if he could just get a Taylor or Kessler and win.
I just think, Joe and Warren can't have all things their own way. Better off risking it all now as his career winds down.

I don't think that things are helped by Warren's pretty much standard refusal to have any of the fights outside his fighter's own territory. Of course fighters are then going to demand more for the fight as they're giving 'home' advantage to their opponent.
Of course Taylor's demand of $10 million is unrealistic, but if Warren and Calzaghe want to fight 'the best man out there' (which, at super-middle, isn't Taylor if you ask me) then they'll need to give ground themselves.

Yes, you're right, Warren likes to keep things close, where he can easily control the promotional strings, and this does mean that fighters are going to ask for more money.
American fighters don't like leaving home though, let's face it. Although home is relative in a country as big as American, where each state is a small nation in itself.
I think now that Calzaghe is very unlikely to take any risks whatsoever. He won't leave home unless he is making a small fortune, and Warren probably isn't keen on letting him fight over there unless it's against an opponent they are very confident of beating, and a huge payday.

It may be a good offer but for these fighters to come to Joes backyard they deserve it, Why the hell dosn't Calzaghe go to the states and fight then there would be no problem with the money.jamesmcdonnell wrote:I would have thought 4-5 million dollars was a pretty good offer.

Using that logic, then Joe can demand 10 million to go into someone else's backyard :)Ben Keilty wrote:

And there lies one of the huge issue with boxing today.

Not sure what type of crowd Taylor pulls, but I'd guess HBO would prefer the fight in Wales, just for the huge crowd and atmosphere - they love that sort of thing.
10 mill is HUGE money, completely unrealistic, and 4 mill is probably much more than Taylor has ever earned before - he's not exactly box office is he?

I think Taylor earned around $4 million for his match with Winky Wright. Going by that figure, if accurate, then surely he's worth more to come over to Wales to fight Joe, especially if, quoted by Warren, he's 'the best man out there'? Sure, not $10 million, but more than the $4 million offered at the mo.MightyWarrior wrote:Not sure what type of crowd Taylor pulls, but I'd guess HBO would prefer the fight in Wales, just for the huge crowd and atmosphere - they love that sort of thing.

Tyszu was a great but he isn't the draw that Taylor is. $4m is a joke of an offer to Taylor - he could probably get that fighting Manfredo or some such fighter at homeFinal Fight wrote:Warren and Calzaghe really do a lot of pissing about but Taylor's demand is pathetic.

Taylor by all accounts is getting $5-6m against Spinks, he can get another $6m fighting his next fight. I'm not suprised Taylor wants more to fight Calazage in Britain. I may be wrong but I think Taylor has earned up to $8m in the past
This fight would do 300k-500k PPVs in the US plus PPVs here and the worldwide rights, 35,000 crowd here. How much money is there - probably enough for a split of $15m. Taylor would expect at least $8m imo - I doubt they'd turn that down. Remember Mayweather got $8m for Baldomir, which sold 350k PPVs. So theres probably enough in this for $8m a piece.

10 miilion dollars! I thought that 4 million was a little low for Taylor to risk a fight with Calzaghe but 10 million is surely preposterous and shows that Taylor wants nothing to do with Calzaghe. To be honest, I'm starting to have a little more sympathy for the way Calzaghe's career has turned out. The guy is 35 and has lost a lot of his power but nobody is willing to take a risk to claim his scalp. I just wish Kessler had taken the July date. I still can't understand why he didn't.
I think he earned 4 mil for Wright because HBO dug deep to make it worth both fighters whiles - Taylor having been spoiled almost to death for 24 rounds & needing a good foil, and Wright being the ultimate greedy pudendum.PompeyScot wrote:I think Taylor earned around $4 million for his match with Winky Wright. My guess is the 5mil for Ouma had more to do with staging it close to home and getting a desperate Ouma.
Anyway, Taylor's got unfinished business at 160, with the WBC mandatory. Not sure how much Taylor can hold out for because he's practically a super middle already - but he can always have more attractive negotiations for Kessler who's willing to make his name stateside.
Warren could really blow this by letting both men slip away. If Kessler and Taylor fought each other it would be the ultimate message that the world doesn't revolve around them.
You know, this is the time when Mundine and Froch should keep flapping their big mouths for a fight.
I personally hope ITV eject the fWanker without a parachute. As if anyone's going to pay £10-£15 a month to see his fighters on Setanta.
Taylor is good, but also a pampered "American Olympian." Is Jermain a draw away from his home state? I don't know if he can draw anything elsewhere. $6 mil for Spinks, in a "border battle" that accommodates both men's home fans.Phenomenal-Nutrition wrote:Tyszu was a great but he isn't the draw that Taylor is. $4m is a joke of an offer to Taylor - he could probably get that fighting Manfredo or some such fighter at homeFinal Fight wrote:Warren and Calzaghe really do a lot of pissing about but Taylor's demand is pathetic.

Despite him taking big names and competitive fights, there is a huge streak of handicapping in Taylor's reign (good names, but either old or small) and he could be a bit of a Virgil Hill homeboy himself.
Taylor is undisputed at 160, but come on, how long can he keep fighting welters for all that money? I'd bet he can't make 160 after this year and his little earner will be interrupted by his dangerous mandatory (Pavlik or Miranda).

Well I'm surprised to hear he'd been paid so much already - he could pretty much retire after one or two defences against light middles on that type of wage.PompeyScot wrote:

God knows how HBO make their money back.
And no doubt FW knows what he's been earning....

Pavlik/Miranda seems likely to be a $5-6m earner at home and both can be outboxed. Maybe he is slightly spoilt but so is Mayweather/Hatton/DLH and as was RJJ - the man at the top can afford to be spoilt. As for his resume, hes fought the best at 160 and fighting the best middles and best welters is how Hagler, Hopkins and Monzon made there ways into ATG lists.Final Fight wrote:Taylor is good, but also a pampered "American Olympian." Even if he can't make Middleweigt, theres Kessler/Dawson/Winky/Hopkins/RJJ out there for him.
$4m was a pistake offer as usual from Warren (yes I wish someone would take the piss out of me in a similar way too). At least offer $7m
hmm, I'd say Taylor's 160 options after the mandatory are limited.Phenomenal-Nutrition wrote:Pavlik/Miranda seems likely to be a $5-6m earner at home and both can be outboxed. At 168, definitely, there is Taylor-Kessler. But that would be worth way more if Kessler gets built up.
But no one would dignify a Hopkins rubber match. Who wants to see Bernard skip around the ring, throw in the occasional cuff or headbutt and maybe fight over the last 4 rds? Dawson's too dangerous, Jones needed to beat Hanshaw to earn credibility though we all want to see Taylor-Winky 2, that hinge son Winky beating Hopkins (which I think he can do but which will up WW's demands...)

I think Taylor was well overpaid for the Wright fight, I doubt that HBO made much money on that one at all, I mean Winky isn't really much of a draw is he?
Bear in mind that there are two fighters to be paid for this one, but just one, I cannot see the fight being worth enough to pay both men 10 million dollars, and I don't know that Taylor can find a fight which is worth that much, against who exactly?

I think Winky-Taylor at 160 is very likely - Winky seemed to duck out of the rematch though after Taylor seemed to hurt him a few times (watching Winky box is not something I'm incredibly excited about either). Theres also Abraham/Mora/Duddy/Sturm at 160 who are all worth a few quid. Then what if DLH fancies going for the 160lb belts again? I doubt it but if he beats Mayweather who knows. Trinidad seems like a more likely opponent for DLH.Final Fight wrote:hmm, I'd say Taylor's 160 options after the mandatory are limited.Phenomenal-Nutrition wrote:Pavlik/Miranda seems likely to be a $5-6m earner at home and both can be outboxed. Kessler probably needs a build up fight before he fights Taylor, but Taylor going for the WBA/WBC champ should generate allot of interest. Kessler might well take allot less money than Calazage will for the fight. Kessler would also be tempted to make a name for himself in the US.
Calazage-Taylor would be a good fight, but Calazages career needs it more and hes not acting like he truly he wants it. Who knows though maybe they'll make an improved offer.
How many times has Warren made world class fighters reasonable offers? Not too many times in the case of Calazage.
