So you would give Douglas the win over Tyson ?J-C wrote:I just think to make these fantasy match-ups worthwhile you have to take fact over speculation wherever possible, otherwise with two fighters of similar ability you might as well flip a coin.pundit wrote:Schmeling went through a bad spell, lost his next fight to Steve Hamas. When Baer won over Schmeling it was Baers best fight of his entire career IMO. For Schmeling it was one of his worst.

which rounds were the KOs/TKOs? If you don't change it, your votes will still count towards the total, but I can't factor in your KO/TKO results to determine in which rounds the fights end.Schmeling/Baer- Schmeling TKO
Lewis/Walcott- Lewis KO
Charles/Johansson- Johansson KO
Tyson/Tunney- Tunney Tyson KO
Wills/Bowe- Bowe Wills UD
Stribling/Patterson- Stribling UD
Holyfield/Bguner- Holyfield TKO
Langford/Burns- Langford UD
You're probably right, and by the looks of the votes, Langford will surely win this fight. I don't know a great deal about either fighter except what BoxRec records tell. Langford fought a lot more and fought better opposition which is why he lost a lot more. Both seemed to be tough and hard to KO so I decided the fight would likely go the distance.jezzamundo i think this is a very bizarre bad pick, i cant possibly see burns winning. langford fought so so so much better competition than burns its laughable

Nothing against the creator of the thread or the participants but this sums up my feelings... Ali will probably win. Louis will be the only one who could stop him.Decagon wrote:
These topics get so bland when everyone goes ahead and picks who they rank higher, instead of focusing on the myraid of things that might happen when two men get into the ring. How come people never pick upsets in these fights? Upsets happen in real life, why not here? How many fucking times do we we have to see this happen:
We know certain posters favour one or the other.

Not saying that Ali could never lose to Louis, but I'd pick him to win a good 7-8/10... and Louis never stops him... not happening.
I like the argument that on a better night Schmeling beats Baer. It was a pretty close fight anyway before Baer landed those bombs... maybe if Schmeling is more careful he could win...

RESULTS FROM 2 JANUARY 2008:
Schmeling TKO9 Baer
In one of the fights of the tournament so far, Schmeling scores a come from behind technical knockout over Baer. Most of the rounds are closely contended except the 7th where Baer scored a knockdown with a huge right hand to the jaw. Schmeling barely survived the rest of the round, only to stun an over-confident Baer in the 9th!
Lewis KO6 Walcott
A very tactical fight with both fighters showing caution and little action in the first few rounds and Lewis struggled to establish his jab and was frustrated by the elusive Walcott. By the 4th the Lewis jab had started to land regularly, and in the 6th Lewis finished the fight with a powerful 1-2 to the jaw of Walcott who failed to beat the count.
Charles KO9 Johansson
Another entertaining fight ending in a knockout. Johansson started strongly, hurting Charles but unable to put him down. As the fight progressed, Charles begins to take over, knocking Johansson down in the 8 and down and out in the 9th.
Tyson D12 Tunney
In what has been considered the fight of the tournament so far, Tunney came from behind to earn a draw against Tyson. Tyson started strongly, hurting Tunney in every round and knocking him to the canvas in the 3rd. Tunney barely beat the count and lost the next few rounds while on the defense. By the end of the 7th round Tunney was well behind on points, but had started to feel his way into the fight. A frustrated Tyson was docked a point for use of elbows in the 10th round, and Tunney rallied to dominate the final round, knocking Tyson to the canvas in the dying seconds. Scorecards were 113:113, 114:112 Tyson, 113:112 Tunney.
Bowe TKO7 Wills
After six rounds of exciting action, Bowe emerged victorious in this battle of the big men. Rounds were evenly matched for the most, with both men taking some punishment, especially Bowe who walked straight into several big punches in the opening rounds. By the 7th both men had taken a lot of blows, and Wills was the worse for wear. Bowe put Wills down with two big uppercuts on the inside, and the referee stopped the fight as Wills was clearly on unsteady legs although rising by the count of 8.
Patterson UD12 Stribling
An interesting matchup of smaller heavyweights, in which Patterson emerged the victor by a clear unanimous decision. In the end it was Patterson’s handspeed and power that made the difference as he routinely hurt Stribling but was unable to put him down. Patterson’s weak chin was exposed on occasions, being stunned in the 1st, 3rd and 6th rounds but managing to stay on his feet. Scorecards read 115:113, 116:112 and 117:111 all to Patterson.
Holyfield UD12 Bugner
In an impressive performance, the smaller man emerged victorious by a clear unanimous decision. While Bugner gave it his best, he was frequently beaten to the punch, out hustled and put on the back foot by the lighter Holyfield. Bugner won a couple of rounds and almost had Holyfield down in the 5th when he caught him off-balance with a straight right, only for the ropes to keep him standing. Bugner showed signs of tiring towards the end and was clearly hurt by a couple of vicious Holyfield left hooks. By the 12th and final round, both fighters were tired but it was clear who had won the fight.
Langford MD12 Burns
The two smallest men in the tournament fought at a furious pace for twelve rounds, with Langford winning a well deserved majority decision. Some of the rounds were won by Langford clearly, but most of the close rounds went to Burns who habitually rallied for the final 30 seconds of each stanza which probably swayed the judges. While neither man hit the canvas, Langford had Burns hurt and on the defense in the final round. Scorecards were 114:114, 115:113 and 116:113 both to Langford. Compared to the size of today’s heavyweights, this looked like a super middleweight fight!

I'm going to try having a bit more fun this time around.
Ali/Baer
Ali was at the top of his game in this one, stopping a game Baer in 7. Ali picked away at Baer with his lightning quick jab for the first couple rounds and Baer's left eye was quickly swollen shut. Baer didn't give up quite that easily as he knocked the young Ali down in the fifth with a blind right hand. Up quickly, Ali came back to rally and hurt Baer by the end of the round. In the sixth Baer is taking a beating going down twice to Ali's right hand. He makes it out of the round, but just barely. He comes out for the seventh only to get knocked down again, and his corner throws in the towell.
Ali TKO 7.
Frazier/Walcott
Frazier, as usual, starts out slow, walking forward, and eating jabs from Walcott who wins the first round with a fare amount of ease. Frazier comes out for the second round and pounds at Walcott's ribs with his signature left hook, looking to take back the round he lost. Walcott is counter punching well though and stuns Frazier by the end of the round. In the third Frazier comes out bobbing and weaving and digs his head into Walcott's shoulder and starts his work on the inside. Walcott falls back as a barrage of body punches lands from Frazier as Frazier gives chase he gets caught by a Walcott counter left uppercut, and goes down. He gets up by the count of six. His legs still wobbly, he goes back to what he does best and starts bobbing and weaving toward Walcott. A clean left hook from Walcott lands flush and Frazier goes down again. Without a count this time the referee steps in and waves it off. An upset Frazier gets up fairly quickly to protest the call. But, it's too late as Walcott is named the winner by TKO in the 3rd.
Walcott TKO 3.
Foreman/Johansson
Foreman wins an absolute blowout in the second after a vicious right uppercut floors Johansson for the count. Johansson was never really in it as he seemed more like a deer caught in the headlights than a prize fighter.
Foreman KO 2.
Johnson/Tunney
In a very technical fight, but a fairly boring fight Tunney boxes his way to a close split decision. Johnson, feeling he was the better man, shows his disgust by leaving the ring right after the decision is read. In the post fight interview Tunney congratulates Johnson on a well fought fight and offers a possible rematch after the tournament is complete.
Holmes/Bowe
In the most exciting match up yet these two big men go at it for the full twelve rounds. In the opening rounds, Holmes is picking away at Bowe with his jab, who is trying to use his own jab to counteract Holmes'. After three straight rounds for Holmes, Bowe lands a big right at the start of the 4th that rocks Holmes and sends him reeling into the ropes. Holmes manages to hold on and survive, but he takes a major beating and suddenly, its a fight. Holmes tries his best to keep it a boxing match by occasionally throwing his jab, but Bowe is working his way inside and landing the harder shots. By the tenth round the fight is even, but Holmes' corner is threatening to stop the fight if he doesn't go out there and show them he can win. In the eleventh round Holmes hurts Bowe and has him out on his feet and sprawled across the ropes. Unfortunately Holmes' remains too cautious and lets Bowe get to the final round. As the final round begins, Holmes' starts sticking his jab out again. It's somewhat less effective than it was earlier thanks to fatigue, but it's keeping Bowe at bay for the time being. Near the end of a round dominated by Holmes, Bowe lands an overhand right that sends Holmes' to his back. He's up at the count of eight , and as the two combatants are ready to fight again the bell rings and the fight is over. The judges scorecards are 115-112 Holmes, 114-113 Bowe 2x.
Bowe SD 12.
Marciano/Patterson
At the start Patterson looks to be the better of the two, showing off his hand speed and even dropping Marciano in the third for a short count. As the fight goes on Marciano starts to heat up and the body attack starts bothering Patterson. In the 11th round Marciano drops Patterson with his signature right hand. Patterson gets up on unsteady legs and the referee calls it off. Scoring at the end of the fight: 98-91, 97-92, 97-91 all for Patterson.
Marciano TKO 11.
Dempsey/Bugner
In an all out battle Dempsey scores a 9th round TKO after knocking Bugner down four times along the way. Bugner, although outmatched, fought his heart out and looked good at times even stunning Dempsey once in the 4th, but ultimately fell to one of the most ferocious punchers out there.
Dempsey TKO 9.
Louis/Burns
In probably the most mismatched fight yet, the quintessential boxer-puncher picks Burns apart and stops him in the 8th round. Burns has his moments, but they're all too short to give him even a single round. Louis really does show why he is considered one of the greatest of all time in this fight and looks nearly unbeatable in the process.
Louis KO 8.

This is very unlikely. Baer was famous for fighting only in spurts, while Schmeling was methodically scoring round for round. Thus I don't see Schmeing "coming from behind" against Baer.jezzamundo wrote:RESULTS FROM 2 JANUARY 2008:

I know that Baer was famous for fighting in spurts, I was referring to come from behind more in terms of the direction of the fight i.e. Schmeling was knocked down in the 7th with a huge punch, Schmeling was on the defense in the 8th and came back to KO Baer in the 9th.jezzamundo wrote:

RESULTS FROM 3 MARCH 2008
Ali UD12 M Baer
A very one-sided fight by the end of which, Baer is badly cut. Baer only clearly wins one round, the 4th, where he landed a big right hand that had Ali falling into the ropes and on the defense for the rest of the round. Otherwise it is one-way sailing, with Ali far too fast for Baer to tag, peppering Baer's face throughout the fight.
Frazier TKO9 Walcott
Walcott started strongly, winning the first two rounds by clearly outlanding Frazier. The fight evens up as Frazier begins to wear Walcott down, still taking a lot of punches in the process. With just four rounds to go, Walcott has a clear points lead, only to be caught by a huge left hook. Walcott was up at the count of 8, only to be battered against the ropes as the referee stopped the fight.
