Regional Teams - US Championships

Post by Dennis »

Please list the teams as they currently stand for each region. Some regions have not completed their tournaments, but many have. Some of the team members will undoubtedly change since it is a long time to wait from February or March until the US Championships in June.

Keep in mind that regional teams, trials teams, PAL and GG teams may also change slightly if a boxer is qualified by winning more than one tournament. For example, Rau'shee Warren is qualified at 112 by winning the National PAL and at 119 by winning the Midwest Trials. If he boxes at 119 at the US Championships, then the runner-up from the National PAL, Qa’id Muhammad, will take his PAL spot at the US Championships. If a runner-up is already qualified, then the spot will go to a semi-finalist and so on. Rau'shee could also win the National Golden Gloves (at 119??? or will he be at 112???) and then the runner-up at the Midwest Trials, Victor Valenzuela, would go to the US Championships as the Midwest Trials representative.

This is a reminder to all boxers who make it to the semi-finals of a qualifying tournament. Be ready!!!! You may end up being selected as the representative for that tournament at the US Championships.

The U.S. Championships could include the Armed Services Team, the National PAL Team, the National GG Team, the 18 regional teams (counting the 4 individual military teams), the 3 Trials teams (Midwestern, Eastern & Western), the USOEC/NMU Team, and the at-large boxers (including some of the Pan Am Team).

I really wish more regional directors would post their team info here or on Mel's website. She only has 4 teams listed on her site. There are 14 regional teams, 4 military teams, the armed services championships team, the National PAL team, the Midwestern Trials team and the 3 qualifiers that remain - the National Golden Gloves team, the Eastern Trials team and the Western Trials team.

I will try to list some more.

USA Boxing states the deadline is May 18th for the Regional coordinators to submit their rosters for the US Championships. Maybe they will post the info on their website or provide it to Mel and she can post it on her site and on this site. By this weekend we could know all the boxers entered in the US Championships with the exception of the winners of the Western Trials which won't be determined until the next weekend.

Luke - NMU sends an at large team to the Championships; it has nothing to do with Golden Gloves. They've done that for quite a few years now.

Most of the NMU boxers who went to the NGG will probably be on the NMU at-large team going to the US Championships (Nate James will take his NGG bid and bye into the quarter-finals). There may be others who will be on other regional teams, but they would have had to compete in and win the regional. That is only true if they were able to compete in their home area LBC & Regional tourneys because I know that none of them competed in the Michigan LBC tourney or Region 5 tournament.

I realize everyone wants to make the U.S. Championships this year but competing in more than one tournament is going to make for some interesting choices, i.e., Stan Martyniouk on the Region 11 team AND competing in the Western Trials. I really think we need to go back to two Trials - Eastern and Western.

If Stan Martyniouk won the Region 11 tourney at 132, he is not eligible to compete in the Western Trials at 132. He could enter it at a different weight like Raushee Warren did at the MW Trials. Since Stan is listed at 132 for the Western Trials he probably sent in his entry form in case he did not win his regional tourney. Now that he did, he won't be going to the Western Trials.
